To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

We just pay for loads of other stuff of theirs instead Grin. And 30 million for the wedding security Grin

Lilacwine1 · 19/05/2018 15:23

Well said, OP. There are far worse countries to be born into. And I for one, am proud to be British, I always have been.

Alabamazero · 19/05/2018 15:23

I'm proud to be British - loved watching the wedding and I think the pomp and ceremony is the best in the world.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 15:23

I'm proud to be British too. But let's not pretend just because some totals got married were a great country.

cleofatra · 19/05/2018 15:25

I wouldn't say there was much pomp and ceremony. More an Americanisation of the event.

LadyWithLapdog · 19/05/2018 15:25

Circus in fancy clothes.

Mariele · 19/05/2018 15:26

Yep, bread and circuses.

QueenOfIce · 19/05/2018 15:26

I'm not proud to be British not at all, the divide between 'them' and 'us' gets ever wider and a Royal wedding is supposedly good for morale. No what's good for morale is seeing our country help those who are homeless, those who are desperately in need, giving us the taxpayer a break not making us pay for a ridiculous wedding because it's meant to make us all happy. 30k for a dress is a fucking disgrace.

ahouseofleaves · 19/05/2018 15:28

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal

I got shivers down my own spine the other day when I read that whilst MM's dress cost the taxpayer around 30k, it would have been 22k to clad Grenfell in suitable materials.

Wow. I can't even wrap my head properly around that.

ByeMF · 19/05/2018 15:28

It really fucks me off that some posters on here think that those of us who enjoyed the royal wedding have fuck all social conscience. They might only be able to have one view of the world, which is a shame for them. But guess what? Some of us can think it's lovely that two people love each other. We can also recognise it as a turning point in history (the civil rights movement happened in my lifetime). And we can also appreciate the unjustness that happens every day in our society. But then we probably ARE the ones that do something about it whilst the haters just sit and bitch from their keyboards.

Alabamazero · 19/05/2018 15:30

Did the tax payers pay for the dress or was it the bride? Genuinely don't know - but I thought it was the bride?

hmcAsWas · 19/05/2018 15:30

Off topic

What's with the OPs very dodgy user name? Is it an ironic reference to something else? Have I missed a discussion, because without any context I am finding it offensive. Just me?

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 15:32

I don't think people have fuck all social conscience.

I am happy 2 people got married and wish them all the best.
However it does annoy me when people fall over themselves saying how amazing the royals are Grin

midsummabreak · 19/05/2018 15:33

Well said SpitefulMidLifeAnimal

hehitmeanditfeltlikeakiss · 19/05/2018 15:35

hmc it's a song.. get a grip.

OP posts:
hmcAsWas · 19/05/2018 15:38

Wow - rude!

gillybeanz · 19/05/2018 15:39

Seeing one family with more privilege and money than most of us put together, does not make me proud to be British.
Have nothing against having a Royal family, but they make me more ashamed than proud.

Eolian · 19/05/2018 15:41

I don't hate the royals. I just genuinely don't see why them getting married makes you proud to be British. How does the wedding create pride in you? You weren't anything to do with it. It is simply a wedding. A huge, expensive, impressive wedding of two famous people on a beautiful sunny day, sure. What is there specifically for you to be proud about?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 19/05/2018 15:43

I think it’s embarrassing tbh. It’s treated like a soap opera by the Americans. A very expensive soap opera.

drearydeardre · 19/05/2018 15:44

agree with OP YANBU
to be proud of your country (best bits and not so good aspects) is known as patriotism (not to be confused with nationalism (look up the difference if you want to be informed))
One of the things I find depressing about MN (why am I here I ask myself) is how some posters try to bring everything down and take all the good aspects out of every situation.

SayImADreamer · 19/05/2018 15:45

I enjoy watching the pomp and splendour.

But there's nothing to feel proud about.

I also think anyone who truly believes MM would be interested in H if he worked at Tesco is deeply naive.

Toyboysrus · 19/05/2018 15:47

YANBU OP I love the fact that in Britain we have 100's of years of history of kings, queens, princes, princesses, knights, castles, ancient churches and stately homes still in existence today and many people want and appreciate the chance to celebrate all that.

HelenaDove · 19/05/2018 15:54

One word...............Windrush.

Nikephorus · 19/05/2018 15:54

MMs dress didn't cost the tax payers a penny.
And yet the £30+ million for the security came out of our pockets....

kalapattar · 19/05/2018 15:56

o be proud of your country (best bits and not so good aspects) is known as patriotism (not to be confused with nationalism (look up the difference if you want to be informed

I am patriotic. I support my country and am proud of some things we do as a country and am ashamed of other things we do.

We do a good job of 'pomp and ceremony'. I do like watching that kind of stuff.

However - I do not believe we should have a Monarchy. I get sick of the constant reinforcement by a sycophantic media and we rarely hear dissenting voices in the mainstream media about the idea of a Monarchy.

I have heard people say that if you don't support the Monarchy, then you aren't patriotic. If someone fails to stand or sing for the National Anthem, they are accused of being unpatriotic.

Fuck that. I am proud of many things the UK does - but not everything. But if someone calls me unpatriotic because I don't stand for or sing the National Anthem and if I say I don't support the Monarchy, then fuck them.
