To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

I really enjoyed the wedding but it doesn’t have a real impact on people’s every day lives

As much as I thought it was lovely I’m afraid I’m with bread and circuses

Onlyoldontheoutside · 19/05/2018 14:57

We can all wear sack cloth and ashes and moan on social media that it's a disgrace that people dare to be happy. The weather is disgraceful too forcing people out of doors.
So what are you whingers actuallydoing to make the world a better place?
I am enjoying the simple things in life,I enjoyed the wedding, the pomp and fail to see how those of us who have enjoyed all this would help anyone by being miserable instead.

The country didn't shine. The wealthy royals shone.
Whereas a large portion of the country still struggled to make ends meet.
But yes look at Britain aren't we amazing!

I like watching a royal wedding, but yes, definitely bread and circuses! Seems to work a charm on some of MN's resident batshit Brexiteers though. No surprises there. Grin

The wedding of a member of the royal family makes you appreciate that you live in a free country? What is a republic then? Blush

By all means, feel national pride and enjoy it, but don’t get aristocracy confused with freedom!

As I said in my original post, I'm from a town that is the opposite of Windsor and I'm from a family who raised me with barely enough to make ends meet. But wow, would you look at that? I can feel happy for people who have been born into wealth. Me and Prince Harry actually have something in common - we both lost our mothers at a young age and (presumably he too) realised that money means fuck all in the grand scheme of things. Should they have just got married at the local register office and had the reception in a working men's club with an open invite to all the homeless people in the area to come and feast on an all you can eat buffet of cold sausage rolls and doritos emptied into a bowl?

I think Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are perfect role models and even though they are "randoms" in that I'll never meet or know them - seeing them get married today was lovely and made me proud to call Great Britain my home.

I hope the two of them enjoy their day and I hope they will be happy.

It doesn't impact on the way I feel about this country or being British, not to mention the social injustice and yawning gap between haves and have nots.

diddl · 19/05/2018 15:10

"The wealthy royals shone. "

Yes-without lifting a finger!

cleofatra · 19/05/2018 15:12

I hope they pay the royal spin doctors well as they are bloody great at their job.

CadyHeron · 19/05/2018 15:14

YANBU Op, it's nice to have something to celebrate as a country.
waves flags and ignores moaners and fun sponges

MarshaBradyo · 19/05/2018 15:14

I loved the mix of the performers however that was ace

kalapattar · 19/05/2018 15:16

seeing them get married today was lovely and made me proud to call Great Britain my home

Why?

Do you like living in a country where we don't elect our Head of State and instead insist that one family and it's heirs keep the power to themselves?

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 15:17

Wow anyone else see the comment against Islam? What a dummy poster.

Believeitornot · 19/05/2018 15:18

Well wealth doesn’t trickle down despite what people think.
The rich have got richer and the poor remain so.

It was lovely to see them get married - I felt for Meghan with her family issues because I remember a lot of anxiety before my wedding due to a messed up family (sister phoned me on the day saying she wasn’t coming, step dad refused to come and tried to stop my Mum coming). I bet it was tough for her.

However, the whole institution is ridiculous. It just reminds me of the imbalance in our country.
