To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

Don't worry, there probably won't be another big royal wedding here for another 20 years or so

Well we've had 2 weddings and several babies. The next Royal event is sadly going to be a death.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 19:25

We can blame the government yes.
But also the people taking millions a year in tax to? Like the royals...

hehitmeanditfeltlikeakiss · 19/05/2018 19:47

No it won't be a death.. it will be the birth of Harry and Meghan's first baby Smile.

Good luck to them both. I hope they will be happy together. We enjoyed watching the wedding. The weather has been beautiful and it's been a lovely day.

zwellers · 19/05/2018 20:04

Actually op it's days like today that make me ashamed of this country

Aylarose · 19/05/2018 20:35

Loved the wedding. Hate the ever increasing poverty gap. Not sure if the two should be mutually exclusive or not!

HelenaDove · 19/05/2018 20:36

mummabear Yay for the race to the bottom You have got no idea what some women in this country are going through or are about to go through.

Can I cheekily state that it is estimated the royals bring in around 500 million a year in tourism for uk.
But if we got rid of them and opened up palaces for tours etc we could get more.
The palace of Versailles has 3 million annual visitors a year and the basic adult ticket price is 20 pounds and that means a lot of money Grin. And then think of all the other palaces and estates that are not privately owned.

I know the royals do more then tourism but I hate how people think tourism would be ruined without them Grin

Inkspellme · 19/05/2018 20:47

I’m also proud to live in a free country. Looking at the royal wedding today - I saw a short video as I wanted to see her dress - makes me glad I don’t live in the UK. The wealth of the privileged elite is shocking. However, I do think that everyone is entitled to be proud of your country, I’m just a Republican at heart. When I celebrate paddy’s day in Ireland I feel proud so I do understand it a bit. Each to their own!

GorgonLondon · 19/05/2018 20:48

Europe has stately homes, castles, churches, too, but many of the countries saw sense and got rid of monarchies.

Yep.. and then they got dictators.

I'm not a monarchist but imagine if corbyn or Thatcher was in power with no head of state to keep them in check.

RoseWhiteTips · 19/05/2018 20:51

What an embarrassing OP.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 20:51

We could have a republic. Look at ireland .

We need a head of state that doesn't live in a palace and earn billions etc though. We could have an elected head of state that serves 4 years and is paid a wage. There job would be to represent Britain on the global scale and make sure the government didn't infringe or break laws and rules and regulations.

expatinscotland · 19/05/2018 20:51

'Yep.. and then they got dictators.'

And have moved beyond that. Britain's past is certainly nothing to brag about Hmm.

CadyHeron · 19/05/2018 20:56

Brilliant today, loved it all. Gorgeous ceremony, beautiful weather, the way they celebrated both cultures coming together.....
Even the grump posters can't bring me down

biscuitraider · 19/05/2018 20:58

No it made me feel the opposite if anything. The royals didn't put any effort into it all anyway. But it was the contrast to all the down and outs I saw in the streets when i went up town today. I wish them both well, but as far as i'm concerned, it was just two ordinary people getting married.

CadyHeron · 19/05/2018 20:59

Long live the monarchy

hehitmeanditfeltlikeakiss · 19/05/2018 20:59

Who is it embarrassing for Rose? I'm not embarrassed in the slightest. Are you? Oh, I forgot to care.

Siewel123. Terrible idea

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 19/05/2018 21:02

I actually felt embarrassed by all that pomp and ceremony. Other countries must think we sit out in the sun sipping tea in our little quaint picturesque villages. Truth is, the Royal Weddjng was on while the other 90% of Britains living in shit holes that get more more violent with people being scared to walk the streets at night, employment rising and were children are going hungry, yes it's absolutely great to be British. I really think the Royal family should be on channel five, they love doing documentaries about family's of scrounges who get government money but don't work. And before you start, yeah yeah the Queen works blah blah blah, maybe William and Harry are patrons of charities, but the rest? The amount of money in that church when there are children starving made me absolutely unashamedly embarrassed to be British.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 21:18

@madeyemoodysmum. Why? Most other countries survive without a monarchy ruling over them.

actually now you mention it - I was sitting outside in the sunshine with a cup of tea (not watching the wedding though) which I would imagine most of the country were doing. Many of us do live in civilised towns and villages where no-one is scared to walk the street and children are well looked after.
Don't know where you get your idea that 90% of the country are in dire straits Confused

madeyemoodysmum · 19/05/2018 21:31

More over paid elected idiots full of self importance and operating there own interest with back handers and bribery. I'd rather not.

The queen has dedicated her life to this country. She has brought up and trained her descendants to help and promote charities and good causes all over the world.

As the royals get younger they can make a difference and raise awareness in many ways.

The princes popularity shines today

I'm happy to celebrate that.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 21:36

@madeye. I'm happy to celebrate a lovely a couple but not the sheer waste of money we spend on the royals.
I'm not happy to say yay go Britain from one event, that shows how amazing the richest people in the UK live, when people suffer greatly all over the UK.

RedDwarves · 19/05/2018 21:40

The wedding looked nice enough, but as an Australian, I’m eagerly awaiting the day we become a republic and I don’t believe it’ll be too far into the future.

And I also live in a free country with much to be proud of. The royals add nothing here.

WrongOnTheInternet · 19/05/2018 21:42

IsMyUserNameRubbish I quite agree. drearydear, I guess it does depend on where you are - that's the point of inequality. Many of the big cities are getting worse, some downright dangerous. Nice posh rural villages, less so.
