AIBU to think it's still a while before we accept a fully black person marrying into royals?

Im not convinced it's quite as progressive as everyone's suggesting... I don't think a wedding has to be a political statement either but I do wonder if she wasn't mixed race if she'd be accepted by them as things stand in 2018?

I don't see how it makes the slightest difference, and I think its pretty racist to keep commenting on how she's not really all that black....Hmm

ghostyslovesheets · 19/05/2018 11:43

ffs will these idiotic thread ever stop!

yabu and a pratt

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 11:43

Yeah maybe. Black myself btw

Fairly relevant given how we've lightened skin and relaxed hair to be accepted and taken seriously throughout history

She's mixed race. IMO the lighter skin and straight hair definitely increased her being accepted by them

OP posts:
Pengggwn · 19/05/2018 11:51

What would they do, refuse him permission to marry a woman who wasn't mixed race? Of course they wouldn't. Imagine the scandal when Harry decided to step out of the line of succession, get married at the Chelsea Registry Office and then go down the Dog and Duck and get hammered?

MiggeldyHiggins · 19/05/2018 11:57

IMO the lighter skin and straight hair definitely increased her being accepted by them

Unless you've talked to any of them, wtf would you know about it?

For all you know the Queen was all "for fucks sake Henry, we told you to make us look proper modern and shit, could you not have got someone blacker/bisexual/transgender/Irish"?

Why does it have to be about MM? Do they have any black people who've married into royalty here in the U.K yet?

OP posts:
GladAllOver · 19/05/2018 12:02

Obama is always referred to as black. But he is mixed-race too.

caroldecker · 19/05/2018 12:06

ncd How many people have married into the royal family?

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 12:06

Exactly @GladAllOver things are improving but it's not anywhere near fully accepting of black people in positions of extreme power in the west

OP posts:
Pengggwn · 19/05/2018 12:06

Why does it have to be about MM?

God knows - it's your post.

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 12:11

Yes my post... about it not being as progressive as is being suggested

Not personally about MM. Only mentioned her specifically myself in response to being accused of racism

OP posts:
Pengggwn · 19/05/2018 12:13

It doesn't quite make sense, though, OP. She is just the woman he fell in love with and she happens to be mixed race. If this were an arranged marriage I would see your argument, but I don't think the Royal Family had much of a say in this.

I thought he was doing quite well- divorcee, American, actress, older woman, mixed race..... 8/10 Harry!!

BonnieF · 19/05/2018 12:22

I couldn’t care less about Markle’s ethnicity. It is completely irrelevant. The monarchy is a ridiculous anachronism which has no place in the 21st century, irrespective of who her parents are.

DuchyDuke · 19/05/2018 12:22

I think Will’s kids will probably be able to marry any Christian of whatever colour or sex they prefer.

Society, media, etc

15star · 19/05/2018 12:53

I don't get these posts or people asking why there's not more ethic diversity in the royal family. He's married the person he loves. Its not a case of "we need to make the royal family diverse, Harry go and sort it out". Also people saying she's only accepted because she's lighter and has straight hair is probably really offensive to her.

15star · 19/05/2018 12:55

Also i reckon they was probs more worried about her being a divorcee with crazy family than her race.

overmydeadbody · 19/05/2018 13:02

No one in my family had married anyone ethnically diverse, certainly no black people. Would I be worried? Or complain? Think we're not progressive enough? Or just accept that people marry who they fall in love with and that's all that matters?

Ridiculous post.

Kahlua4me · 19/05/2018 13:02

Surely it depends on who you fall in love with 😊. Did you make sure that you married someone of a different colour to you? Can’t say it occurred to me, although his parents are from another country if that counts!

Perhaps you need to have a word and make sure that they consider someone’s skin colour before dating....

Personally I think they are lovely together and will do a good job of their marriage
