AIBU to think it's still a while before we accept a fully black person marrying into royals?

Im not convinced it's quite as progressive as everyone's suggesting... I don't think a wedding has to be a political statement either but I do wonder if she wasn't mixed race if she'd be accepted by them as things stand in 2018?

But in your opening post you speculate that if she wasn't mixed race she may not have been accepted by them!
So you are saying that if she was fully black they might not have accepted her - why do you think that? Why wouldn't they do you think?

HateIsNotGood · 19/05/2018 16:27

I also think it's very possible that the colour of her skin made no difference at all when Harry and Meghan decided to get married - it really doesn't to most people.

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 16:28

@BMW6 well prince Charles isn't exactly known for being non racist

OP posts:
HateIsNotGood · 19/05/2018 16:33

He might say some 'silly' things but I don't think he's racist at all. We all say and do silly and misplaced things; I've yet to meet The Perfect Person.

If you really want to see an embarrassing Prince Charles you can try and find the 1970s BBC documentary of him 'at work in the RAF' - the bit where he attempts to emulate a Monty Python sketch is priceless.

Frenchiemamax · 19/05/2018 16:36

I'm actually quite surprised that he was allowed to marry her to be honest

You what?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

balsamicbarbara · 19/05/2018 16:42

YANBU. It was the same with Obama.

BMW6 · 19/05/2018 16:56

So a racist Prince Charles has just escorted his black daughter in law down the aisle, offered his hand to her black mother to help her from her pew, chatted to her on the steps after the wedding, and hosted a tea party for Meghan and her mum 2 days ago. Right.

BMW6 · 19/05/2018 16:57

Tbh I think the prejudice is coming from you.

NurseButtercup · 19/05/2018 16:59

"It appears a lot of MNers don't know about colourism"

I agree with this, however in my opinion, outside of the black community few people are "consciously" aware of colourism.

Ever since the engagement was announced Meghan Markles "black" credentials have been hotly debated. I'm hoping that the expression's of her blackness demonstrated in her wedding will temporarily quieten down the naysayers.

In response to your op I think if Harry had met and fallen in love with a dark-skinned black women, with the same credentials as Meghan he would have "been allowed" to marry her. Primarily because unless William and his children die, Harry is very very very unlikely to ever become king.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/05/2018 17:01

I'd be okay with it, I'm surprised the Queen even let a mixed race person in, quite frankly. Olive skinned great grandchildren.

boatass · 19/05/2018 17:01

Yanbu

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/05/2018 17:05

prince Charles isn't exactly known for being non racist Well, he is almost 70 years old, was brought up in a most stultified manner, has a very different outlook on almost everything in life because of the protective custody he has lived in for every moment of those almost 70 years.

He doesn't have anyone to use as a social sounding board (except his now adult kids, I would assume) and was raised to be the head of the Commonwealth, King and all round 'not quite real' person.

You can't really expect him to appear 'normal' on any topic. And, having seen him in action with a group of black kids making very loud music (Princes Trust occasion, no media presence) I am not sure he is racist or as wholly out of touch as he is portrayed.

Megabeth · 19/05/2018 17:06

Her Mum was there with her dreadlocks, they had a sermon delivered by a black clergyman. When they left the church the Gospel choir sang Amen.

I'm mixed race and think this is progress.

x2boys · 19/05/2018 17:09

well we dont know what colour Harry and Meghan s children will be as genetics can be a funny thing they may appear to be white, black or somewhere in between but I hope they will be very happy.

DerelictWreck · 19/05/2018 17:10

Why I don't understand is why we're all so ready to proclaim them as progressive/racist/modern whatever, but no-one made an issue of the fact that she wasn't allowed to be Catholic?!

chocolatesun · 19/05/2018 17:11

You’re an idiot. Of course a ‘fully black person’ (whatever that means) would be accepted.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/05/2018 17:13

That's true x2boys, I have a mixed race cousin who appears white with red hair and blue eyes. Genetics are very strange.

MiggeldyHiggins · 19/05/2018 17:16

Why would anyone make an issue of that? She can be Catholic, the law was changed in 2015.

Megabeth · 19/05/2018 17:22

Meghan was baptised into the Church Of England after their engagement.

ClaryFray · 19/05/2018 17:23

Why does race always need to brought into it for fucks sakes. I am not overly bothered by the royal wedding, and hadn't followed it myself. But the photos my friends have shared they look very in love. I bet he couldn't care if she was green.

She's a divorcee too but sssshh.... it's the race thing we should bitch about.

It's hardly progressive, he loves her. She loves him. So what...

Racecardriver · 19/05/2018 17:26

Tbf I think he being a divorcee is more of any issue that her race. I'm pretty sure that Harry would have been allowed to marry anyone sorry if a man or a criminal. If you look at the difficulty William had marrying Kate who is about as white as they come out really makes me think that isn't about race.

MiggeldyHiggins · 19/05/2018 17:27

Divorced not a problem either, the grooms father, stepmother, uncle and aunt and great aunt: all divorced, all Royal.

50shadesofgreyismylaundry · 19/05/2018 17:35

A good friend of mine is very very very minor, but royal enough to need permission from the Queen to marry. He married a black woman, and totally awesome she was too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/05/2018 17:49

OK, I stand corrected. Blush

MiggeldyHiggins · 19/05/2018 17:50

Nope. They did not. Only the first six in line to the throne need the Queens permission to marry, even Harry did not need it.
