AIBU to think it's still a while before we accept a fully black person marrying into royals?

Im not convinced it's quite as progressive as everyone's suggesting... I don't think a wedding has to be a political statement either but I do wonder if she wasn't mixed race if she'd be accepted by them as things stand in 2018?

Not convinced it would of been okay for Will to marry "anyone of his choice". Like it or not Will is future king and the sort of stunts Megan's family have pulled would not have been tolerated had it been Wills wedding. I doubt they would have even dated had this been Will - and not through choice, through royal duty.

Flyingpompom · 19/05/2018 13:06

I never quite understand these threads. If he'd fallen in love with a black woman and the wedding had been blocked, then you'd have a point. But Meghan is the bride cos he loves her, it's not an outreach program.

I've never had a relationship with a black guy, am I racist?

VladmirsPoutine · 19/05/2018 13:06

Oh FFS!

I'm mixed race and your post is all over the bloody place. Just give it a rest for today.

mavismcruet · 19/05/2018 13:06

Maybe Harry didn’t get the memo about the diversity in work policy Hmm

Or maybe he just fell in love with a person. You know, like everyone else is allowed to do.

SilverySurfer · 19/05/2018 13:07

Pathetic attempt 0/10

BlueBug45 · 19/05/2018 13:14

@ncdincasethisthreadflops it's who he was introduced to. You can't start a relationship let alone marry someone if no form of introduction has been made or you didn't meet them in other ways.

Oh and my oldest sister isn't impressed by my match - not ethically diverse enough - and I'm black.

BTW in the US she is considered black like Obama is. Obama explained why he doesn't consider himself mixed race.

RunMummyRun68 · 19/05/2018 13:17

Really? The only person coming across with a problem is you op!!

Looking for racism where there isn't any is as bad as actually being racist in my book

Yabu

TurdLord · 19/05/2018 13:19

I think she’s independently successful, absolutely beautiful and her race has no bearing on my opinion of her.
I accept that as a white person i may not notice as many instances of racism but i can only really imagine the Daily Mail and co being worried about it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/05/2018 13:21

Bloody Nora! Has the world gone mad? Who cares?

Oh, and Viscount Weymouth....

Chromatographer · 19/05/2018 13:26

Have you seen Channel 4's comedy, the Windsors?

On that, Prince Charles says that [marrying a mixed race person] "wouldn't do for Wills, of course", but it's alright as Harry's only sixth in line to the throne and it would take "quite a plane crash" to see his progeny on the throne!

pigeondujour · 19/05/2018 14:06

You're right OP.

Looking for racism where there isn't any is as bad as actually being racist in my book

Your book's pretty thick then.

reallybadidea · 19/05/2018 14:13

I think you're right too OP. I'm actually quite surprised that he was allowed to marry her to be honest.

stevie69 · 19/05/2018 14:44

No one in my family had married anyone ethnically diverse, certainly no black people. Would I be worried? Or complain? Think we're not progressive enough? Or just accept that people marry who they fall in love with and that's all that matters?

Ridiculous post.

Was just about to post exactly this, so thanks @overmydeadbody: you've saved me the bother.

I'm the singleton in the family. I'm white. Should I start looking for someone who's 'black enough' just to give my wider family a credible diversity rating?

NameChangedForThisQ · 19/05/2018 14:51

I agree with you. If she had been a dark skinned woman with natural hair the world would have seen it all as much more shocking I'm sure. She's 'exotic' and 'acceptable black'. It appears a lot of MNers don't know about colourism

MiggeldyHiggins · 19/05/2018 15:25

It appears that you don't know how a)racist you sound and b) as if you know the first thing about any of them.

reallybadidea · 19/05/2018 15:29

How does the (black) OP sound racist?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/05/2018 15:39

The same way any other poster could sound racist. You can't read the colour of someone's skin!

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 15:41

No you can't read the colour. You can read words though (hopefully) Hmm

OP posts:
reallybadidea · 19/05/2018 15:42

Specifically what was racist about the post?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/05/2018 15:52

I agree with the exotic and acceptable black

I think Harry has and would have married who he wanted

Would a black woman who wasn’t light skinned who wasn’t to look at ambiguous be so accepted by society sadly I’m not sure

But she is a woman of colour and for many she is acceptable to marry into the royal family and to have children who shall be in line to the thrown

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/05/2018 15:54

OP. I was being pedantic... and look, reallybadidea has beautifully rephrased the question.

My answer now would be - No idea. I just think the whole pfaffing over someone elses wedding is daft! But maybe the very fact that a proper royal wedding has been put on for a woman who is black, not English, a divorcee etc is a sign that the whole royal organisation is loosening up a little.

But basically, he didn't fall in love with a darker skinned, natural haired black woman, so, well, meh!

BMW6 · 19/05/2018 15:54

So until a member of the Royal family marries someone black enough to satisfy your requirements you feel that you can accuse them of racism?

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 15:58

@BMW6 I haven't accused anyone of racism

I've been accused of racism myself laughably

I've said I'm not so sure we can yet claim we're quite as progressive as is being made out because of this.

OP posts:
HappyLollipop · 19/05/2018 15:59

I think it would be quite a while for a fully black person to move into the royal family but it's not beyond the realm of possibility either as the world becomes more diverse as do the circles that people intermingle it will become inventible that people of all different races will come together. But Harry's marriage to a mixed race American is a huge step and we shouldn't be looking to whats next and just celebrate how far we've come. I say all this as a black woman myself.

ncdincasethisthreadflops · 19/05/2018 16:02

Agreed @HappyLollipop
