To not want MiL to drink while babysitting

My MiL looks after DD(2.5) once a week while I’m at work. She will send pictures to show what they’re up to, and I noticed in the most recent an empty bottle of wine and two glasses on the table. She was meeting her friend for lunch and they had a bottle between them, whilst she’s looking after her granddaughter.

One glass might be ok, I suppose, but half a bottle seems like a lot. When I mentioned it to DP, he said that it was ok because she drinks a lot normally so half a bottle isn’t a lot for her!

AIBU to be really cross that she’s had that much whilst in charge of my little one?

I'm not the OP and I'm not touchy. I just found it curious why someone would find something so unfunny, well...funny.

Ah, so it's all about the actual drink consumed then. A beer is odd, a whiskey or a Coke isn't. I'll let him know.

Grandmaswagsbag · 20/05/2018 17:44

One can of beer at Xmas is funny though. It’s such a ‘Mark Corrigan’ or as dh and I like to call it ‘cleanshirt’ thing to do (will be lost on those that have never watched peep show). I think it’s the fact its beer and a can, if it was one glass of something really special and tasty then it wouldn’t seem such a odd thing to do. It’s nothing personal. Just funny.

Bluntness100 · 20/05/2018 18:05

It is a little funny. It says he feels a beer is something special or celebratory. Generally folks push the boat out and have champagne or something on Xmas day . Having your annual can of beer is, well, a little odd.

He clearly likes beer. Sees it as a special treat. So why does he only have one can a year?

ICantCopeAnymore · 20/05/2018 18:11

Well we do love Peep Show.

Because that's what he chooses to do?

ParisUSM · 20/05/2018 18:32

Wow, it doesn't take much to be branded odd on mumsnet. Anything at all different from middle class 'norms' is just too much for people. I do love the assumption that generally people have champagne on Christmas day though, check your privilege, lol.

Icantcope, I don't know why you're engaging, it's not anyone's business what your partner drinks.

ICantCopeAnymore · 20/05/2018 18:45

It really doesn't, does it? I find it utterly bizarre that my DH is odd because he chooses to consume one particular liquid on Christmas Day. I've never known anything like it, but then Mumsnet continues to shock me daily with the assumptions and behaviours of some users.

I engaged because I was genuinely curious at how someone could possibly find it so funny. It's not something I, or anyone I know of would find amusing so it piqued my interest Smile

Bluntness100 · 20/05/2018 18:50

No one is saying he is odd, more the Practice of having an annual can of beer on Xmas day is a bit odd.

I think it is because beer is such an everyday normal drink. Very few people see it as celebratory or special. It's like saying I have my annual cup of tea or glass of Robinson's squash every Xmas day..

Eatmycheese · 20/05/2018 18:51

I’m not middle class
I didn’t use the word odd
I wrote that it made me chuckle which it did

Sorry for being working class and amused

Eatmycheese · 20/05/2018 18:53

Bluntness “ Robinson’s squash “ 😉

XiCi · 20/05/2018 19:14

The ritual quaffing of a single can of beer on Xmas day is indeed odd but quaint

It's the buying of a 'six pack of glass bottle Coca Cola', as a treat for his birthday that really made me laugh.I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the stipulation that it has to be glass bottles. It all just sounds so anal.

MarthasGinYard · 20/05/2018 19:29

'It's the buying of a 'six pack of glass bottle Coca Cola', as a treat for his birthday that really made me laugh.'

Thought this was just a touch of can't cope sarcasm....

But perhaps not

ParisUSM · 20/05/2018 19:36

Every one has different things they do for birthdays and at Christmas. We have a daft wee tradition of getting coke in glass bottles too, big deal. People on here remind me so much of annoying people at work who say 'how odd' about any tiny thing different from what the herd do. Thank god they think me odd!

ICantCopeAnymore · 20/05/2018 19:44

Yep, he does do that, no sarcasm. They have to be glass, or it wouldn't be a treat. Apparently it tastes different.

I worked in a school once where the people were like that. It was a very small, village school and they arte incredible small minded. Everything that was different to what they did was "weird" when in fact it was all perfectly normal!

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/05/2018 19:47

It's all a bit 'organised fun'. But not too much, mind!

MarthasGinYard · 20/05/2018 19:48

Can't cope

I'm with your DH on this one

No taste like a bottled cola with all the scuffed bottle effect from the crates

That's holiday coke that is

Far better than a can or plastic bottle

Grandmaswagsbag · 20/05/2018 22:23

Anal and quaint is exactly how I would describe it. I have a few friends who have funny little rituals like this. But they recognise why it’s a bit amusing to radicals that crack open a can once a week. It’s really not a biggy.
