AIBU to think that anyone who hears Laurel is playing a practical joke? It's definitely yanny!

Where is the L sound?! It's Yanny!!

Rikalaily · 16/05/2018 10:21

The first time I heard it start with a Ya sound like it was going to say Yanny, but after the Ya it changed so said Ya'urel' then was Laurel after that.

Peachydream · 16/05/2018 10:23

I can hear Laurel- I can't hear a 'Y' sound at all.

Will listen on another device and report back.

Peachydream · 16/05/2018 10:25

Nope- still Laurel, (phone speaker)

GenderApostate · 16/05/2018 10:30

I can only hear laurel, all the tech blokes at work are obsessing over this, they’ve used all kinds of sonic trickery on it and I can still only hear laurel, there are no ‘y’ sounds at all to my ears. 2 out of a dozen of us can hear both yanny/laurel, some that couldn’t hear yanny can hear it now they changed the pitch etc.

bobstersmum · 16/05/2018 10:38

Can't hear either, I hear Laurie

spiderlight · 16/05/2018 10:50

I heard 'Yanny' clear as day and couldn't work out how anyone could possibly hear anything else. Then I listened to the slowed-down clip at the bottom of the page and that clearly said 'Laurel', but after listening to that I could only hear 'Laurel' in the original clip as well and I couldn't work out how I ever thought it was 'Yanny'. Went back to it half an hour later and can only hear 'Yanny' again.

throwcushions · 16/05/2018 10:52

I hear laurel, apparently if you have better hearing or are listening on a higher quality device laurel is more likely and the recording is actually saying laurel.

wonkylegs · 16/05/2018 10:53

I heard it on the radio and the first few times I could only hear Yanny, then I heard Laurel once and now all I can hear is Laurel

FeralBeryl · 16/05/2018 10:53

Oh my GOD! I've been Yanny all morning (DH Yanny first but then Laurel) I've just tried your link and I'm just Laurel now Shock rechecked my other link and also Laurel. Wahhhhh

Phosphorus · 16/05/2018 10:54

44, 11, and 9 year olds all hearing Laurel here.

lanbury · 16/05/2018 10:58

How the hell do you hear laurel? Shock Yanny loud and clear!! but then I don't know how people see pink and grey on that trainer picture when I can only see turquoise and white!!

SlowlyShrinking · 16/05/2018 10:59

I’ve changed from yanny to laurel now 😳

blueskyinmarch · 16/05/2018 10:59

I have gone back to it again and now I head laurel. I think it it two different clips and you just get one at random when you click on the link.

buttercup54321 · 16/05/2018 11:02

Laurel. How on earth do you get Yanny from that?

blueskyinmarch · 16/05/2018 11:02

clicky link

lanbury · 16/05/2018 11:03

I think it's a con! Grin recon it randomly plays one or the other as now I've heard both and the voice is different!!

lanbury · 16/05/2018 11:04

Cross posted bluesky! Grin

TimeIhadaNameChange · 16/05/2018 11:09

How bizarre. When I heard the original I heard Yanni, and couldn't, for the life of me, hear Laurel. When listening tot he explanation bit I could only hear Yanni when they played it separately.

TitzillatheHun · 16/05/2018 11:10

Yanny. Definitely Yanny.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 16/05/2018 11:12

Those of you hearing yanny, turn the volume up really loud and it ill change to laurel.

Crispbutty · 16/05/2018 11:12

I can hear both. Laurel very loudly and yanni very faintly in the background.

Crispbutty · 16/05/2018 11:14

Aha!! Sussed it. I’m on iPhone and if I move the volume up and down it changes from one to the other!

wombats · 16/05/2018 11:15

I thought this was a baby name thread 😂😂😂😂😂

CaliforniaDream · 16/05/2018 11:15

It's definitely the same clip - my partner and I listened to it together and I heard yanny and he head Laurel and then a group of colleagues and I all listened together and it is a real split!

Apparently the 'yanny' is pitched higher so older people or people who don't have such good hearing are less likely to hear yanny and more likely to hear laurel.
