AIBU to think that anyone who hears Laurel is playing a practical joke? It's definitely yanny!

I'm 30 and can't hear yanny from any of the links- is my hearing crap??

mathanxiety · 19/05/2018 03:25

But the pronunciation of -ford as in the Ford car would show (1) rigid adherence to phonetics, and (2) lack of familiarity with British place names, which is understandable. Most British place names are not household names in the US.

You get places like Kildare in Ireland pronounced with the emphasis on the KIL, and places in England ending in -bury end with 'berry' in American English instead of 'bree'.
'Shire' becomes 'shy-er' instead of shur or sheer.

Mine has changed now! I now hear Laurel! That is quite scary...

kaytee87 · 19/05/2018 18:13

Can only hear laurel. Doesn't sound anything like yanny

Honeyroar · 19/05/2018 18:41

The first time I tried I heard Laurel very clearly. I later played it to my husband and we both heard Laurel, absolutely no margin for anything else. The following time I listened I heard a very American Yanny. I've just done one of those clips on YouTube that change the speed, and I heard Laurel for most of it, but started nearing Yanny when it slowed down to -20% to -40% of the speed. When I previously listened and heard Yanny it wasn't slow though.

MakeItRain · 19/05/2018 18:59

I've been listening for the last couple of days and it varies everytime, even on the same device listening to the same clips. Each times it's either yanny or laurel and it's really distinctly either for the whole time I'm listening and doesn't change. Today it's been yanny all day. Yesterday it was laurel in the morning and yanny in the evening. I'm weirdly obsessed with it now! My son keeps telling me to switch it off! (He says he hears both but says he can switch it to whichever he wants!)

downinthejunglee · 19/05/2018 22:19

If I listen to the higher pitch I hear Yanny, if I listen to the lower pitch I hear laurel

Bubbles121 · 19/05/2018 22:20

Haha I actually heard Yammy!

LordBuckley · 19/05/2018 22:36

It doesn't sound like either of them to me.

All I can hear is "May I".

Threethings798 · 20/05/2018 23:03

Bit late into this debate but feel as though those saying laurel are playing a prank 😅 Dont understand how anyone thinks Laurel
How does this work?!

liz70 · 21/05/2018 07:40

Both DD3 and DH say "Laurel", I hear "Yearrnie", like "Yanny" but in a Russian-American accent.
No wonder I ask DH, "Am I speaking in a foreign language or something?", when he doesn't seem to hear or listen to me properly. He really does bloody hear me differently!"

longshot · 23/05/2018 00:23

A bit late to this party, but thought I'd add this - A friend of mine has just set up an online t-shirt shop with "Yanny or Laurel" related designs! They stock a few baby and kids ones, which might be fun for little ones to wear...

I originally could only hear Yannick, now only laurel. Fucked if I know

Puffycat · 23/05/2018 00:45

It’s bloody laurel ffs!!

Redglitter · 23/05/2018 02:01

Nope no prank. The guy who recorded it has apparently even said it's Laurel

BoiledFrog · 23/05/2018 02:32

In the side thing for the yanny/laurel debate on YouTube, was a video for the dress. I initially saw it as white and gold, but I put my finger over the light source at the side and blinked a few times and it changed. Nobody needs an existential crisis at 2am.

BoiledFrog · 23/05/2018 02:34

If something so simple is experienced so differently, no wonder we are so easily manipulated

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 23/05/2018 04:42

It's laurel. 100 percent.

KhalliWalli · 23/05/2018 04:54

I hear Yanny, my kids and DH all hear Laurel. I feel so apart from them, like I’ve just discovered I am adopted 🤨.

Threethings798 · 23/05/2018 10:22

I just don’t understand how people hear Laurel 😅

liz70 · 24/05/2018 19:42

Me neither. Liars, liars, pants on fire. All of them.
