Yanny or Laurel?!

AIBU to think that anyone who hears Laurel is playing a practical joke? It's definitely yanny!

You’re right, Bonfires!

TheBogWitchIsBack · 16/05/2018 11:19

It's definitely the same clip ..when I hear laurel clearly I can vaguely hear yanny in the background and vice versa.
I can easily shift my attention between one and the other. When you start hearing them it's virtually impossible not to hear them.

Ginandplatonic · 16/05/2018 11:22

I hear Yanni if the volume is turned down and Laurel if it is turned up. Can switch between, even mid-word by scrolling the volume up and down.

MirandaWest · 16/05/2018 11:22

Yanny for me

TossDaily · 16/05/2018 11:22

Yanny.

MummaGiles · 16/05/2018 11:23

Definitely only Laurel for me

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 16/05/2018 11:31

Yanny for me. Can't hear Laurel at all. I've tried messing with the volume but it's still Yanny.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/05/2018 11:33

YAnny

Or Yummy even.

Can’t imagine where Laurel comes in.

MayFayner · 16/05/2018 11:34

100% yanny - although I can hear Laurel in the slowed-down version (but that could just as easily just be someone going "yanny yanny yanny laurel" for all I know).

I asked 2yo DS and he hears yanny too.

Are both yanny and Laurel in the recording but your brain only chooses to hear one of them at a time, is that it? I guess that's the reason for the crackly "interference" noise in the background?

Head melted anyway.

SaucyJack · 16/05/2018 11:36

I've been listening to this all morning, and I can now switch from Yanny to Laurel at the same volume, but I can only get Yanny back if I turn the volume right down.

I thought the Laurel was made-up bs until I heard it- but they're both there, although Laurel is a much lower pitch.

FeralBeryl · 16/05/2018 11:38

All the Yanny hearers, do me a favour and leave it an hour then try again. This is what I did and can only hear Laurel now. Interested to see if anyone else has this

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 16/05/2018 11:41

I listened last night and couldn't hear either Yanny or Laurel but am hearing Yanny really clearly now.

wowfudge · 16/05/2018 11:41

Laurel is an undertone - he's saying Yanny but you hear the Laurel with the sound up. I did wonder if there was more than one recording as Laurel seemed to get more pronounced the more times I listened.

MarthaArthur · 16/05/2018 11:42

I hear yenny and so does my dm. Neither of us can hear laurel but the sky presenters hear laurel.

Troels · 16/05/2018 11:43

Tried it again so it's been a few hours I hear a bit of both. Larry. ??I have allergies, my ears a bit blocked.

angryburd · 16/05/2018 11:48

I can hear both. Like Yaurel.

SendYouUpinFlames · 16/05/2018 11:51

Fuck knows but it's not either of them words.

user1483387154 · 16/05/2018 11:52

Yanny

MummytoCSJH · 16/05/2018 11:53

Laurel!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/05/2018 11:53

I hear both/neither. I either hear Yarry, or make myself hear one or the other. One is high pitched, one lower. Both weird and robotic. Hasn’t blown my mind like the gold/blue dress!

GeekyBlinders · 16/05/2018 11:55

It's frequency, there's an article on the BBC about it and it shows what happens if you remove the high/low frequency, you hear either Yanny or Laurel.

LinoleumBlownapart · 16/05/2018 12:00

I can hear Yanny. But on the slowed down clip that someone posted below I can hear both Yanny and Laurel depending on the speed.

RhinoBlue · 16/05/2018 12:06

I don't hear Yanny or Laurel 😂

I'm sure the guy is saying 'yearly'

PaperTrain · 16/05/2018 12:07

I've tried it on phone and computer and either time if I turn the sound down I hear 'Yanny' but if I turn it up 'Laurel'. The point at which they change is rather strange to hear.

BuggeringNora · 16/05/2018 12:12

Yanny for me, and I'm 44. Can't hear Laurel at all no matter how much I fiddle with the volume. Not sure how accurate this is though as my hearing is definitely not that great - I always have the subtitles on the tv.
