AIBU to think that anyone who hears Laurel is playing a practical joke? It's definitely yanny!

Is some scientist going to explain it?

I posted a link on previous page

flowergrrl77 · 17/05/2018 18:52

I’ve played and played and played. Both words are on my screen at the same time. So it’s nothing to do with that!!

I can only hear Laurel!

I read on after trying it out several times. Apparently the real answer IS Laurel so I can feel smug now ;)

Serialweightwatcher · 17/05/2018 18:56

I can only hear Yanny nothing even remotely like Laurel Confused

dayinlifeof · 17/05/2018 18:58

Somebody tried it with speech recognition software in the hope of getting an answer. It said "Lily"

Mxyzptlk · 17/05/2018 19:00

Listened to that thing several times today & it was laurel. Now all of a sudden it's yanny again.
Ears? Brain? Who's messing me about??

user546425732 · 17/05/2018 19:01

Yay, I may have deaf ears but they are young deaf ears as I can only hear Yanny Grin

NotAgainYoda · 17/05/2018 19:05

This blows my mind. And I studied psychology

I can only hear Yanny. DH (same age) can only hear Laurel. Neither of us can hear any of the phonemes of the other

whogivesafeck · 17/05/2018 19:13

I heard "laurel" this morning on gmb, but now am only hearing "yanny". WTF does that mean?!

Moonkissedlegs · 17/05/2018 19:14

If we are hearing such different things in one word, then are there loads of sounds and words out there that everyone hears differently?

Like, if I called someone a 'dickhead' would they hear 'great bloke'? Or would 'gobshite' be heard as 'top lad'?

CuriousMama · 17/05/2018 19:15

Ds2 hears yanny I hear laurel.

Havana7 · 17/05/2018 19:18

I hear yanny yanny Laurel yanny yanny yanny 😂

PinkBassoon · 17/05/2018 19:19

It's really strange as Dh and I have heard both yanny and Laurel. Our kids aged 6 & 10 also heard Laurel 🤷‍♀️

BitchQueen90 · 17/05/2018 19:19

I'm only 27 and I always hear Laurel! Guess I'm old at heart Grin

eachtigertires · 17/05/2018 19:19

Laurel. Can’t hear yanny at all!

happypoobum · 17/05/2018 19:23

Laurel

I am old

dontbesillyhenry · 17/05/2018 19:24

My two year old thinks it says Henry

InsomniacAnonymous · 17/05/2018 19:25

BitchQueen90 my daughter - also 27 - hears Laurel too, whereas my husband and I (71 and 64 respectively) hear Yanny.

BitchQueen90 · 17/05/2018 19:26

Played it for 4yo DS and asked him what he heard without telling him the options. He also said laurel.

ALongHardWinter · 17/05/2018 19:31

My DD who is 34 can only hear Laurel,my DGD who is 12 can only hear Yanny. But I'm 54 and can only hear Yanny. Is that odd?

IAmMumWho · 17/05/2018 19:33

Definitely hear Laurel and I'm English

BexConnor · 17/05/2018 19:34

I hear Laurel. I played it over and over again trying my hardest to pick out yanny and I just can't hear anything other than laurel!

I don't think it is to do with not hearing high frequencies as is suggested on the BBC website (they basically said that if you hear laurel it means you don't hear them well.) I can normally hear high frequencies, quite often when the person with me says they can't hear anything! I'm fascinated by things like this, I'd love to know what the actual reason is for people hearing it differently.

RubyJack · 17/05/2018 19:34

Laurel

We all listened to the same clip this morning, Dh and I knew the word choices choices, but not the kids.....results were -
Dh(47)-Laurel
Me(48)-Yanny
Dd1(12)-Yanny
Dd2(11)-Laurel
Ds(7)-Yaurelly (he has a severe speech disorder...which might have skewed things!)

We all said our answers at the same time, and all looked completely shocked that we heard different things!

i cannot understand how the laurel people hear laurel....unless it is some mass conspiracy, or something signifying the end of days (these are literally the most sensible answers I have)
