AIBU to think that anyone who hears Laurel is playing a practical joke? It's definitely yanny!

Laurel

Charolais · 17/05/2018 18:13

Yanny. I’m surprised anyone hears Laurel.

I’m English and this makes me think about how my American husband and sons hear words. They pronounce Dawn as Don and there is no way I can get them to pronounce it correctly, no matter how I try.

My husband has nieces called Dawn and Laurie and the whole family pronounce their names as Don and Lorry.

Oh yeah, while I’m at it; there’s a family member called Claude and they pronounce it Clod.

Don, Lorry and Clod, I’m not kidding.

ALongHardWinter · 17/05/2018 18:15

Yanny. Can't understand how people are hearing Laurel?

Petitino · 17/05/2018 18:16

Me & DH only hear Laurel
Doesn't sound remotely like Yanny

DH thinks it's a hoax though and the vid just sometimes plays Laurel and then sometimes Yanny. I'm inclined to think so too.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2018 18:16

Laurel, 100%.

Where are people hearing the long E sound of Yanni?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/05/2018 18:16

Yanny, no hint of Laurel.

Charolais · 17/05/2018 18:17

I take it back. On this audio clip I hear Laurel;

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 17/05/2018 18:19

Laurel. Where the hell is the Yani?
Is some scientist going to explain it?

Charolais · 17/05/2018 18:21

This clip is Yanny.

Someone is pulling our leg.

cosytoaster · 17/05/2018 18:22

Yanny very clearly yesterday (me and DS), Laurel very clearly today (again for both of us), I,m not convinced it's the same clip

RoboticSealpup · 17/05/2018 18:23

there is no way I can get them to pronounce it correctly

Americans don't pronounce words incorrectly, just differently, surely?

RoboticSealpup · 17/05/2018 18:25

I,m not convinced it's the same clip

We all listened to it together in my office today and there was a 50/50 split among my colleagues. It was totally bizarre.

PinkBassoon · 17/05/2018 18:31

DH thinks it's a hoax though and the vid just sometimes plays Laurel and then sometimes Yanny. I'm inclined to think so too.

Nope! My family and I listened to the clip together - half of us heard Yanny and half heard Laurel. Then the next day, dh and I could heard the opposite of what we heard before.

dontbesillyhenry · 17/05/2018 18:31

I think it's absolute bollocks. On the radio this morning it was a woman saying Laurel. Now it's a man saying Yanny. There's no way my frequencies would change within 12 hours. Somebody is having is at it

sprinklesandsauce · 17/05/2018 18:32

Definitely Yanny in the clips I am listening to. Absolutely no way that my ears could hear it as Laurel, it is very distinctively Yanny

YearOfYouRemember · 17/05/2018 18:33

I heard it on the radio yesterday and it was Laurel. Today I heard it on the telly and couldn't make a recognisable word out at all.

sprinklesandsauce · 17/05/2018 18:33

user546425732 · 17/05/2018 18:33

Yanny, and I'm partly deaf so maybe Yanny is at the lower frequencies?

MibsXX · 17/05/2018 18:35

I heard Laurel, ( me 50 ) my 11 yr old son heard yanni !

And apparently the correct answer is...

RidingWindhorses · 17/05/2018 18:37

Yanny.

RB68 · 17/05/2018 18:38

Yanni is higher freq Laurel lower

Violetparis · 17/05/2018 18:44

My daughter said Laurel in a really low gruff voice after listening to it and then I heard it.

BunnerRean · 17/05/2018 18:45

I can't hear Laurel, and neither can DH or my youngest DD (incidentally, she's called Laurel!) Eldest DD hears Laurel!

MakeItRain · 17/05/2018 18:47

Last night I heard only yanny and my ds 8 heard laurel. Tonight I can only hear laurel Confused

PebbleTissueScissors · 17/05/2018 18:49

The youtube link above has the answer
Basically if you are younger you are more likely to her Yanny or older Laurel.

This is the pitch shifted clips linked to in the YouTube with the sound pitch lowered and raised.
