to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

Any sandal that actually holds your footwear on your foot is fine average wife.

It's the squelching, and flapping, and shuffling- and sweaty feet sliding off the back- that annoys most people.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/05/2018 22:43

Yuck men in flip flops 🤢

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/05/2018 22:44

Just get some birkenstocks Ffs people!

Lweji · 15/05/2018 22:50

There's so much more than Birkenstocks. It shows lack of imagination.

Ollivander84 · 15/05/2018 23:00

I wish we could wear sandals! No strappy tops, open toe shoes, or shorts

randomchatter · 15/05/2018 23:05

Flip flops or other comfy open footwear is fine surely as long as you have 'decent' shoes under your desk ready for meetings? There's nothing worse than everyone wearing 'proper' shoes to work and slipping them off at 3pm with naked sweaty feet hidden under the desk on a hot summer's day. You know that pervasive summer office smell!

ferrier · 15/05/2018 23:12

I can run in flipflops a darn sight better than I can run in high heels, court shoes or pumps. I've also been driving in them for 30 years and they stay on my feet no matter what (yes, way better than pumps which are always slipping off my heel). As for the noise- if they fit properly and stay on your feet properly they don't tend to make a noise and even if they do, why is that a worse noise than a stiletto heel shoe makes?

SherbrookeFosterer · 16/05/2018 00:12

I have a foot fetish, so I find it it rather sexy.

Especially if worn in cold rainy weather.

Don't get me started on blizzards!

TooManyPaws · 16/05/2018 00:24

I don't understand why people consider flip-flops suitable for driving in?

Because I learned to drive in them? I can also drive in both bare feet and high heels.

Can't walk in tarts' trotters though; I can't imagine why some people think they're suitable for office wear.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/05/2018 00:30

I've never worked anywhere where flip flops wrre allowed. Our dress code says we need to dress "appropriately" which of course is open to interpretation by different managers even where teams are doing the same job.

I woukd never wear open toed sandals to work but i know people who do. I'm a social worker and am in and out of people's houses so don't think open toed sandals are a good idea. and definitely not flipflops.

strawberrisc · 16/05/2018 06:01

YABU. I wear flip-flops because my feet get embarrassingly hot in the Summer and frankly it’s none of your business.

Teacher22 · 16/05/2018 06:40

Flip flops are unprofessional. When I taught the young teachers flopped round in these horrors while enforcing a formal shoe and clothes policy on the pupils and sixth formers. Utter hypocrisy and such a bad example.

But I am old fashioned and prefer an equal policy in the workplace. I did observe that those who were casual in attire had a lax attitude to what was due to their jobs and other people and a generous view of what was owing to themselves.

GoldenMcOldie · 16/05/2018 06:46

Vulgar? They are just feet.

Just don't look.

MCamp10 · 16/05/2018 07:53

Dress code? Appropriate? Corporate environment? Vulgar? FFS - get over yourself, open your eyes, look around you and notice the real things that are happening! Homeless people dying on the streets, innocent citizens being deported, children going to school hungry, benefits slashed for those with disabilities and terminal illnesses, proliferation of food banks with more going out than is being donated, hospitals understaffed and closing.........do I need to continue? All this going on and you are getting uptight at a bit of informal footwear? Preserve me from the petit bourgeoisie!

Skywest · 16/05/2018 08:18

I work in a care environment so I am unable to wear flip flops to work, but I'll be honest with you, it's so hot that I would if I could. I love flip flops and I wear them anywhere I want to as long as it's hot enough. Sometimes I don't even gasp paint my toenails. If you don't like my style or my choices don't look at me. I've been through enough in my life and I want to enjoy the time I have here. I'm not going to bow to a bunch of judgemental mumsnetters.

Lweji · 16/05/2018 09:23

Predicted maximum temperature here in Lisbon: 28oC.
People going to work or tourists in flipflops that I noticed: 0.

SaucyJack · 16/05/2018 09:33

The irony being Skywest that you're actually agreeing with most of us that flip flops are not adequate footwear for the working day.

Icanttakemuchmore · 16/05/2018 09:46

I felt very vulnerable wearing flip flops, would hate to have someone stand on my toes or drop something on them. Plus it hurts my feet to not wear something with a small heel. Can't wear flat shoes as it hurts. Flip flops are for the beach and holidays not work.

MrsKoala · 16/05/2018 09:59

But Saucy, the fact people are unable to wear them because of their work policy doesn’t mean they agree they are not suitable. I worked in a call centre where I never left my desk and the company still banned any kind of open shoe due to health and safety. IMO a ridiculous policy, which meant I was unable to wear sandals when I was hugely swollen and pregnant in the summer. The fact I was unable to wear them didn’t mean I agreed they weren’t suited to my role.

JacquesHammer · 16/05/2018 10:10

Indeed. Because I find the time when I really want to get my creativity flowing is when picking footwear Grin

I wear what is comfortable. That is all the I’m concerned about.

ralfeesmum · 16/05/2018 14:50

Have to agree with Copperbonnet - are there ANY employers who will tolerate sandals/flip-flops thereby ignoring the basics of Health & Safety in the workplace?
When I worked in local government sandals, anything open-toed, flip-flops, skyscraper stilletoes and especially platform footwear was absolutely no, no, no!

(But I'd make it unlawful for those dreadful super baggy cargo-shorts that some men seem to live in for the entire summer.)

freezerfoodyum · 16/05/2018 15:04

I work in the voluntary sector and our health and safety is basically non existent.

Not saying that's a good thing btw!!

I've only worked for employers who will tolerate sandals and flip flops! In creative companies it's pretty standard to have zero rules and restrictions around clothing and footwear - just an expectation that if going on site to clients' offices for meetings that you will be presentable (but don't necessarily have to conform to the client company dress code)

Anything goes - you're not doing manual labour or working with hazardous chemicals, so you can wear what you like for sitting at a desk or standing at a whiteboard!

The CEO in my company is wearing jeans, flip flops and a t-shirt today

Another member of the C-suite is wearing open toed sandals, jeans and a sleeveless top (with her full sleeve, upper back and upper chest tattoos on display)

It's the quality of your work, not the clothes you wear, that count

bananafish81 · 16/05/2018 15:11

We have health and safety work station assessments, we're not allowed to use spray mount adhesive for boards above a certain size because H&S requires that be done in a ventilated area (so we have to send them out to get made to comply with H&S), for example. We have health and safety policies, but clothing doesn't come into it...

BlueSapp · 16/05/2018 15:12

I don't see whats wrong with a smart sandal, flipflops should only be worn on the beach, but a nice leather smart sandal can look every bit professional. You should however have a pedicure or at least a home clean up of your feet before letting them into the world but I mean surly its better to be comfortable as well
