to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

SummaLuvin · 14/05/2018 14:02

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

Here it’s the norm to wear slides sandals and flip flops for most of the year. I don’t think it affects professionalism though.

Semster · 14/05/2018 20:35

i just can't stand that squelch of bare feet sticking to flip flops and then separating.

I can't either.

My flip flops don't make that sound though.

Semster · 14/05/2018 20:37

totally unprofessional even if you possess the most beautifully manicured feet in the world

This is what I find hilarious. I've just had emails from two potential new clients saying that I was recommended to them by previous clients, who said how professional and effective I am.

I guess you can build a great website even with flip flops on.

Kerry987 · 14/05/2018 20:39

Soon enough pyjamas and boxer shorts will be allowed at work too and outside the house too.

Why do people wear flip flops outside the house and on public transport? Do their feet don't get dirty when walking? Why can't they not wear proper sandals.?

Unfinishedkitchen · 14/05/2018 20:41

I don’t like it either. On dress down Friday one woman was shlepping about in them and I thought it was too casual even for dress down Friday. It’s not right in an office environment.

freezerfoodyum · 14/05/2018 20:41

Why do people give a shit what others wear?

I don't like pencil skirts and high heels but I don't moan about women who wear them. Ridiculous.

Applejack70455 · 14/05/2018 20:41

I think we banned flip flops but we had many weeks of flip flop gate where the nature of flip flops was discussed (so if it's got just a toe post at the front but a strap at the back, is it a flip flip?) Feelings were running high.

FWIW I wouldn't wear them to work. I feel weird enough in sandals. I hate my feet though so only stray to sandals when it's VERY hot.

mimibunz · 14/05/2018 20:42

Between flip flops and arse cheeks you might as well be at the beach in our offices. I’m sick to death of everyone wanting to be comfortable everywhere they go. Back in my day, you wore two inch heels and a skirt that covered your knees! Grin

Oldraver · 14/05/2018 20:43

I personalyl think flip flops should be for the pool/spa/getting out of the shower. They are not proper items of footwear, but people can wear what they want

daffodillament · 14/05/2018 20:44

As long as the flip flops and feet are nice ones that's fine. If the flip flops are cheap and the feet are grim then YANBU.

Smellylittleorange · 14/05/2018 20:44

All this 'not professional enough' shit is just another way to keep women in their place imo. Yes men may have a dress code too but lets be honest having a restrictive dress code is more about the women then men.

SenecaFalls · 14/05/2018 20:46

Also I haven't worn pantyhose tights since 1997. Bare legs (although usually I wear trousers) and nearly bare feet. I love the 21st century workplace. Smile

freezerfoodyum · 14/05/2018 20:46

smelly tbh I feel worse for DH going to work when it's 30 degrees or whatever as he still has to wear his horrible hot trousers and shirt.

Whereas I can go to work in my dress and sandals.

ferrier · 14/05/2018 20:59

Not sure why so many people wear them in the UK. I have never understand it.

Because they're comfortable and they allow my feet to stay cool and not sweaty. Much the most hygienic option.

WonderTweek · 14/05/2018 21:04

Haha. Our CEO waltzed in in her flip flops today. I really don’t care what others wear but I must admit I find suits and pencil skirts a bit dated but each to their own. I’ve never worn flip flops to work but that’s because I can’t find ones that don’t have that flipping strap between your big toe and the second toe. But I always wear converse to work and that to me is a nice, quality shoe. Grin If a flip flop -wearer has particularly unpleasant feet I just look up and problem solved.

I do feel sorry for my husband too who has to wear a suit to work and I’m just in my black skinny jeans and a hoodie.

I do believe you theOrig! I thought it was a typo but it was just too funny to ignore! :)

PunkrockerGirl59 · 14/05/2018 22:22

Don't be a twat, Semster I was clearly referring to a care setting where flip flops are a obviously inappropriate and a safety issue.
Congratulations on your amazing website building/flip flop wearing ninja skills Grin

Semster · 14/05/2018 22:49

PunkrockerGirl59
Odd that you prefaced it with 'but back to the OP' if you were referring to your specific situation. And it's childish to call people twats.

Nerdybeethoven · 14/05/2018 23:10

Surely you can wear nice sandals if you want to feel breeze around the toes, rather than flip flops. I dislike them - over-casual, and people rarely look good in them. If you have any excess bodyweight at all, walking along flipping and flopping just make all your bits wobble. Believe me. And the noise is annoying too.

At my kids' primary school, I notice the teachers in their crop tops, low-slung, tight trousers and flip flops, revealing their tattooes, and I think how bloody vulgar and unprofessional they look. I wouldn't expect them to be in business suits, but they could cover up and be a bit more practical.

Realistica · 14/05/2018 23:36

And yet, your children receive the same education from them whether they wear tight trousers and flip flops, revealing their tattoos as they would if they covered up more.

It's almost as if what a teacher wears makes no difference.

UrgentScurryfunge · 15/05/2018 00:11

Birkenstocks and looking like a geography teacher? Perfect proffessionalism for me then Grin

Most schools I've worked in ban flip flops. Open toes are fine in subjects without a health and safety risk (sciences, D&T)

If it's over 22oC, I can't get the fancy Hotter shoes on my feet so it has to be the Birkenstocks. Over 30oC and it's barefoot because I've swollen out of the Birkenstocks.

I've got a decent gap in between my toes so have no problem with a toe post on a flip flop. What I've never understood is how on earth women get their feet in a court shoe/ ballet pump, and then a) actually move while retaining the thing on their foot and b) managing not to grate all the skin off their ankle within 5 steps.

My feet were not designed to be compatible with attractive or professional footwear and I'm not even 40 yet. Sad
Still at least I can still wear shoes where you get a key to go in the heel Grin

WanderingTrolley1 · 15/05/2018 00:20

Yanbu, OP.

TooManyPaws · 15/05/2018 00:26

My feet are still defiantly feet-shaped as opposed to shoe-shaped. I grew up in the middle east with sandals only worn to school.

Now, with arthritis in my toes (and in my knees, hands and elbows, so snotty ones can't blame it on the flip-flops), I live in Doc Martens in the winter and Fitflops in the summer as they are the only ones padded enough in the sole; I have to wear the slides though as my walk is lopsided due to toe fusion so I eventually pull the toe post out.

My work couldn't give a monkeys despite me being in a "professional" post; they always want to see which coloured/glittery/flowered version I'm wearing that day. I'm glad that judgy pants aren't our uniform.

Woshambo · 15/05/2018 03:53

I used to hate sandals. I have found myself wearing them now though! Our office is roasting and I literally wear as little as possible so I don't pass out lol. I do work nights though, I doubt I could brave it during the day with loads of ppl

Want2bSupermum · 15/05/2018 04:26

I'm with you. I follow the principle that if I cover my toes and heels the men will be required to too. I don't want to gnarly men feet thank you very much. Yuck!
