to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

I walk around the office bare foot - never realised this was an issue til I joined MN.

EnormousDormouse · 15/05/2018 19:26

I wear havaianas to work every single day of the year. I'm a primary teacher.
I can't bear wearing enclosed shoes any more. The downside is one of my little toes has been broken on and off since last August. Still doesn't annoy me enough to put shoes back on though.

bsbabas · 15/05/2018 19:29

My feet are always immaculate and breathe easier so smell less in flip flops. I paint my toenails religiously really pissed off my colour blood red is not going to match my new pink superdry flip flops. I would not wear flip flops in an office though perhaps they need air conditioning were you work or fans.

bsbabas · 15/05/2018 19:30

You are kinda stuck when you start wearing flip flops makes everything else impossible to wear

ToftyAC · 15/05/2018 19:31

Nice sandals? Fine.
Flip-flops? No.

Nataero · 15/05/2018 19:40

Flip flops in the office boils my piss too but I bite my tongue, as long as they’re getting the job done I’ve got bigger things to worry about (it’s my company)

browneyes77 · 15/05/2018 19:45

I don't understand why people consider flip-flops suitable for driving in?

I can’t drive very well in them so avoid driving in them. But then I also struggle driving in heels too.

Ironically my OH had his flip flops on the other day and I said “won’t you struggle driving in those?”. He boasted he’d be fine, but then within 2 minutes of driving off said “you’re right these are awkward to drive in”. WinkGrin

I don’t think people have ever been allowed to wear flip flops to work in summer in any of my office jobs. My current role I’m field based and our team all work from home and so casual dress in team meetings away from any of our business premises they’d be allowed but not in head office.

SaucyJack · 15/05/2018 19:50

Are those just standard flip flops Dormouse?

What would you do if you had to run in an emergency? Seems pretty bloody irresponsible to me TBH to wear them in your job Confused

LookAtThatCritter · 15/05/2018 20:24

I wouldn’t wear flip flops to work, the noise alone would drive me crazy. Smart sandals would be fine though, most of the organisations I’ve worked for would allow them!

FabulouslyFab · 15/05/2018 20:36

Are you serious??
First world problems .....
🤣🤣🤣

VintageVelvet · 15/05/2018 20:41

If only the extent of life’s problems reached as far as flip flops in the work place.

As for your use of the word ‘Vulgar’, do review it’s meaning. You sound silly referring to a legitimate piece of FOOTWEAR as vulgar.

bananafish81 · 15/05/2018 20:42

*Not unreasonable at all. IMO you are not dressed appropriately or smart enough for work if your toes and / or armpits are visible.

That goes for both men and women but men’s toes out at work 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
And women, your outfit is too casual if it’s sleevless 😞*

Don't come and work in tech - you'd be horrified!

Shorts on both sexes, strappy tops and dresses for women, sandals and flip flops

Our CEO wears flip flops and jeans!

LoniceraJaponica · 15/05/2018 20:47

Thanks to this thread I painted my toenails on Sunday, and have soaked, filed and creamed my feet this evening.

treesaregreenandblue · 15/05/2018 20:52

God I honestly thought this was a joke at first! They're flip flops, not stripper outfits! Grin.

Never in my life have I thought of flip flops as vulgar..! Grin

I used to work at a lovely relaxed office, many of the women (including myself) , wore flip flops in the summer, and sleeveless tops. No one was dressed inappropriately for our role, and we were all comfortable. Tbf I think it prob depends a lot on the role.

Personally I hate horrible, stuffy, formal offices and dress codes. Let people be comfortable (I can understand more when formal client facing I should say, depending on the situation). (Even then; I would say flip flops perhaps not formal enough, but not vulgar! Grin).

This thread has enlightened me - who knew some people were so uptight about flip flops..?! Grin. I love them! 😁

Wellthisunexpected · 15/05/2018 21:23

So glad I work in an industry where casual dress and flip flops is acceptable.

Lweji · 15/05/2018 21:27

There's casual wear and there's flip flops.

Flip flops are beach or home wear. A quick dash to the supermarket at best.
Sandals are casual wear.

It's another example of inappropriate dress sense for hot weather by the Brits.

Lweji · 15/05/2018 21:34

Here are examples of casual sandals in different styles, just as comfy and open as flip flops but without looking like you've just stepped out of the swimming pool.

treesaregreenandblue · 15/05/2018 21:37

O regarding the sleeveless tops someone mentioned upthread.

I sweat from my arm pits very easily. I always assumed people would rather see a sleeveless top/possibly my armpit, than wet patches..? And I would have felt horribly embarrassed with wet patches . So would prob have had to cover with a black cardigan or whatever, then been hotter.. (and orob looked weird if t was hot?).

I think a lot depends on context ie how good is the air con? I've worked in an awful building air con/heating wise, where in the summer everyone at one end of the office would be sweating, and people would be trying to get away with as little as possible (from my point of view this was a major health and safety issue, it was sooo hot!, so Tbf they didn't say much then..). In the winter, some people were told off for wearing their coats on inside , but they were cold!

treesaregreenandblue · 15/05/2018 21:40

O the flip flops I/colleagues would wear were generally plain black. In our environment very colourful type flip flops might have perhaps been going a bit far (but I would love to work somewhere where they weren't! GrinGrin)

Lweji · 15/05/2018 21:44

You're deluded.

Strokethefurrywall · 15/05/2018 21:45

Yeah, I'd avoid offshore Caribbean law firms too if you think flip flops in the workplace are vulgar... we live and die in them.

RavenLG · 15/05/2018 21:47

I’m glad I don’t work with the uptight pearl clutchers on this page.

kennycat · 15/05/2018 22:01

Yes flip flops are gross. I'm all for closed toe shoes.

And from a personal point of view, if I can't walk extremely fast in footwear it just won't work as daytime attire for me.

And sandals where people's toes hang over the front of the sole. What is that all about?!

Dita73 · 15/05/2018 22:27

I have to say, you’re a complete snob but that’s ok because I am too and I despise flip flops!!

theaveragewife · 15/05/2018 22:30

So are saltwaters a yay or nay? That’s all I need to know.
