to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

SummaLuvin · 14/05/2018 14:02

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

I work in a really small informal office so the guys here will wear
flip flops or something similar when it's hot. I hate men in flip flops
but find it more bearable than I do when they start clipping their
toenails......the sound of it Confused

stickygotstuck · 14/05/2018 14:50

Sandals are acceptable when it's hot enough, both for men and women (sweaty feet smell worse in a closed shoe).

Flip flops whould be illegal, and not just a work.

GnotherGnu · 14/05/2018 14:51

I think people work better when they're comfortable. In hot weather, flip flops and sandals are way more comfortable than socks or tights and enclosed shoes. I really feel people obsess too much about how they look.

ppeatfruit · 14/05/2018 14:51

Never mind what they look like flip-flops are effing DANGEROUS, someone's lost theirs under a tube train, also nearly fallen off a cliff, they get caught under your brake pedal in the car. You can get people treading ON your feet in the rush hour, crowded shops etc. etc. Unless you take them with you in a bag when travelling then you're risking your health.

Realistica · 14/05/2018 14:53

I really feel people obsess too much about how they look.

And even more so about how other people look!

Glumglowworm · 14/05/2018 14:55

My office has a ban on flip flops for health and safety reasons... which everyone ignores all summer long

We don’t meet external clients so it really doesn’t matter what we’re wearing

3stonedown · 14/05/2018 15:00

I'll admit I work flip flops to work for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy as my feet didn't fit in anything else. I did feel very out of place though

aquamarine2 · 14/05/2018 15:05

I go straight from winter boots to summer flip flops. Only ever wear shoes for weddings etc.

Sat in my office with no sleeves either. Tiny little straps in fact.

!!!

expatinscotland · 14/05/2018 15:05

I'm surprised so many offices are so informal people are allowed to wear flip flops.

brogueish · 14/05/2018 15:07

I used to wear them all summer, but then a few years ago decided that honestly, they weren't really smart enough. However I am now 36 weeks pregnant and nothing else fits, so all bets are off.

How do the flipflop haters feel about wearing them when visibly and heavily pg? Am I being judged??

Misshannahb · 14/05/2018 15:07

It depends on the time of year. I'm a teacher and often wear them in June and July.

ooh I hate flip flops in the office

the noise!!

Actually I hate them generally tbh but obviously in a park or on a beach I have no right. But flip flops at work...hmm, can't you find something in the H&S code to get them banned?

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 15:10

in terms of being heavily pregnant, I'd be concerned about falling over etc but I'm a clumsy clot so that's probably why.

Lkjem · 14/05/2018 15:12

I hate seeing other people’s feet. I loath flip flops. It is not acceptable to wear flip flops anywhere but at the beach. In the bank last week a very large bank clerk was jigging her tattooed thong wearing foot in front of me so I refused to discuss my account with her and left. Totally inappropriate for work.
Yes I am being a git.
All people who claim to have nice feet it doesn’t matter it’s still gross. You city feet are filthy. 🤮

Ravenesque · 14/05/2018 15:13

Wtf is a "revealing sandal"?! Seriously, I can just about get thinking that flip-flops aren't a good thing to wear into the office, but sandals too?! When it's hot it's good for people to let their feet breathe and if their feet aren't pretty, that's hardly something they can do much about really.

Yabu and a total snob when it comes to sandals.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 14/05/2018 15:14

I used to live in SE Asia and everyone wore flipflops, most of the time - I don't see an issue myself.

I can't see why sandals etc. are a H&S issue in a standard office environment - sure, if you're on a building site, where you should be wearing steel capped boots, flip flops are an issue, but in an office? Why would sandals be an issue? Compared to something like ballet flats?

Redpony1 · 14/05/2018 15:14

Flip flops - no, thenoice is annoying more than anything. Nice sandals- totally fine.

Redpony1 · 14/05/2018 15:14

**the noise

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 15:15

Lkjem - interesting, I didn't think a bank would allow a customer facing member of staff to wear flip flops.

RadioDorothy · 14/05/2018 15:15

Oh God no, the sound of flip flops around a corporate office would be hideous.

I have no problem with smart sandals on women though, with nicely painted nails. That's what I wear in the summer.

MrsKoala · 14/05/2018 15:15

i've worked in about 30 offices (lots of temp work) and i've only been in one (the last place i worked at where the air con was so high it was freezing anyway) where sandals and flip flops have been banned. None have banned strappy tops and arm pits out. In the summer i always wore bandeau type tops/dresses and scrappy sandals. It never occurred to me that it wouldn't be allowed.

One of my jobs was in a development office fundraising from billionaires and my managers wore sandals and sleeveless clothes (all were non Brits) when we had summer fundraisers. As did those we were tapping up.

DH's office they wear shorts and star wars t-shirts they get from the market. DH is considered dressed up if he wears his north face stuff.

MrsKoala · 14/05/2018 15:17

i also used to remove my shoes when in the office and walk round bare foot. As did others.

pippistrelle · 14/05/2018 15:17

I’ve never worked in any organisation that allowed open toes.

I don't think that can apply to much of the workforce given the number of sandal-wearers around, and that's before you even get to flip-flips.

DrinkYourGreenTea · 14/05/2018 15:18

YABU if you're working as a lifeguardWink

But it doesn't sound like you are. And yes, I agree that having most of your feet out in a corporate, office job is unprofessional and unnecessary. I'm actually surprised that your colleagues think it's okay to do this.

However, the comment about Tony's toes...have you never been to a swimming baths, on holiday or seen anyone's toes before? I think you're toe-sheltered.
