to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

SummaLuvin · 14/05/2018 14:02

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

I wear leather flip flops to work as my office gets too hot. I wouldn't wear more casual ones though as I think that's pushing it!

MrsKoala I wear flip flops with fabric straps (or leather) then you don't get the rub in the middle of your toes like 'normal' ones.

Slapdasherie · 15/05/2018 05:43

Why are the English so uptight about feet?

I grew up pretty much barefoot in NZ, still love my jandals Wink

When I nannyed in London, the family told me I had to wear shoes in the house as I was setting a bad example to their 1 year old.

Unfortunately I have to wear steel-capped boots at wor,k, even though I work in an office, but my preference is barefoot, and jandals in summer, ugg boots in winter.

Surely you can wear nice sandals if you want to feel breeze around the toes, rather than flip flops

Flip flops have less coverage than sandals and are more comfy. Sandals often rub. Ballet pumps always rub. Court shoes often rub. It's all in the heel and the little toe.

Yogagirl123 · 15/05/2018 07:05

What a thing to worry about!

Skittlesandbeer · 15/05/2018 07:09

You can be sure there are MANY aussies who deplore the thong-isation of the workplace.

Especially when the wearers feel no obligation to keep their feet sweet- tidy nails, clean soles, no cracked flaky skin or foot conditions like fungus. Envy

For the record, it hasn’t been allowed by the office code in any of the places I’ve worked. The odd temp or young ‘un might try it occasionally, but they’d be given short shrift.

Flip flops have less coverage than sandals and are more comfy.

It really depends.

ppeatfruit · 15/05/2018 10:02

Slapdasherie That family is not representative of everyone in this country!!!! They sound off the effing wall!!!!!

A lot of families wear slippers indoors (so change OUT of their shoes at the door).

MrsKoala · 15/05/2018 14:34

Inspired by this thread I am going to try flip flops again!

HouseworkIsASin10 · 15/05/2018 14:39

YABU. Love my flops (and sandals).

Vulgar is a bit over the top though.

Ticketsfrom · 15/05/2018 16:16

All the women in our offices have pretty much moved to sandals for the spring/summer... our dress code says no flip flops though.
And obvs. no open toes in places like the mail room, warehouse etc.

Roversandrhodes · 15/05/2018 17:35

A man should only every wear flip flops on holiday or at the beach ! I get offended seeing men in flip flops in shops so feel for you having to put up with it at work .Some women could do with putting them away too .

ChocOrCheese · 15/05/2018 17:53

Makes me heave. Luckily I work from home so the problem is non-existent. But I vividly remember having breakfast in a swanky hotel, feeling a tad queasy from a rather good evening the day before and finding nearly every other guest wearing flip flops or sandals in the dining room. Would have been OK if they kept their feet under the tables (which had long table cloths) but no - they had to lean back, cross their legs and waggle their toes in the nice fresh air.

browneyes77 · 15/05/2018 18:00

I’ve never worn flip flops to work in the summer because I can’t drive properly in the ruddy things and can’t be arsed to keep changing my shoes. So I just usually wear some smart open toe flat type shoes or slingbacks to let air in to my rapidly expanding hot sweaty feet Grin

MumofBoysx2 · 15/05/2018 18:03

It probably depends on the job, but on the whole slightly less revealing shoes are better. Especially with badly kept feet - all that dry skin and peeling toenail polish (and toes that look like they are in the middle of a judo competition). Eugh!

neveradullmoment99 · 15/05/2018 18:06

Love sandals. Definitely NOT flip flops at work simply because they are not professional and for health and safety reasons. I personally think they look ugly anyway.

Bratsandtwats · 15/05/2018 18:07

I don't understand why people consider flip-flops suitable for driving in?

Winenot78 · 15/05/2018 18:10

I'm not a very smart person, not a complete soon just much happier in jeans and t-shirt than a suit and I love my havianas! I would wear them all year round if I could! I'm not working at the moment but have been lucky as my last few roles were with companies with a casual dress code so I could wear pretty much what I wanted, including flip flops so anyone else wearing them never bothers me. And, to be fair, I tend not to spend much time staring at other people's feet...

The only thing worse than flip flops at work are Birkenstocks at work. They even look smelly.

Bloody love my Birkenstocks! And I don't get how they can "look" smelly.

I may have to pension off my beloved stripey ones, as the cork seems to have sprung a leak and one of them makes a farty noise as I walk. I don't mind, but it does get me some slightly shocked looks when I'm in the office.

happypoobum · 15/05/2018 18:24

No backless shoes allowed at my workplace - Thank God! Grin

woollyheart · 15/05/2018 18:28

I love flip flops - no smelly feet and no aches.

I think high heels at work look vulgar though.

LakieLady · 15/05/2018 18:31

Doesn't anyone else work in an office with air con?

Not any more. We got moved from a lovely, light, airy air-con'd office with a view overlooking a park to a gloomy g/f dungeon with a view of a brick wall. It used to be a store room, so no CH or AC and we hate it. Freezing in winter, baking in summer and gloomy beyond belief. Bastards.

cherish123 · 15/05/2018 18:55

Agreed.

Icanttakemuchmore · 15/05/2018 19:02

It would depend on the working environment of course but in my office it wouldnt be suitable and certainly on a health and safety point of view its not good. I personally don't like flip flops and think thhey look horrible for work (and play but that's my opinion)

Semster · 15/05/2018 19:05

I don't understand why people consider flip-flops suitable for driving in?

Because I've spent the last 10 summers driving in them without any problems?
