to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

Academia. Where what the hell we like!

Sorry but I snorted at how ironic this is 😂

I'm adding flip-flops to the list of things to wear to irk the highly-strung. Tomorrow I shall wear pyjamas and flip-flops on the school run.

RoseWhiteTips · 14/05/2018 17:25

In a professional environment, such footwear is wrong on every level. Ugh

mehhh · 14/05/2018 17:42

I agree with you in terms of maintenance if they're hairy or you have some dodgy fungal toe problem then keep them away but I look after my feet and keep toes painted the only way I can keep cool is wearing sandals so I live in birkenstocks when it gets warmer

^^Oh my! 😆😆

Depends on the feet. Dp would wear flops and shorts every day if he could, but he does have lovely feet. Gnarly feet? Noooo.

TurtleCavalryIsSeriousShit · 14/05/2018 18:07

mrskoala you made me laugh. I grew up in South Africa.... in a very rural town. I didn't wear shoes until I was 13. And I was head girl of my primary school at 11/12.

I love a sandal me... and any chance I her, I take my shoes off...

It reminds me of visiting my sister (I lived in England at the time, she in St Lucia is S.A.)

So I was on holiday. We went to the local supermarket and halfway through she was horrified at thw fact I didn't have shoes on. She loudly asked where the bloody hell they are and I calmly said I had walked from home without shoes Grin

She was mortified and told me off properly as she had to live and work in that town.

It's a holiday destination... I still don't see the problem Grin

Flip flops are tasteless if your feet are dirty or unkept, but I think they are preferable to the pain women have to endure from high heels.

Alienspaceship · 14/05/2018 18:19

The only thing worse than flip flops at work are Birkenstocks at work. They even look smelly.

Lweji · 14/05/2018 18:27

There are several alternatives between them, though.

coffeeforone · 14/05/2018 18:28

You’d hate me! I wore haviannas to the office today! Changed for one hour for a meeting then back to flip flops!

RoadToRivendell · 14/05/2018 18:29

For some reason I really love flip flops (I find them quite stylish, even!) but I cannot abide Birkenstocks. Very geography-teacher unchic.

mrcharlie · 14/05/2018 18:32

God I hate flip flops, my usual first reaction/thought to whoever is wearing is...SLOB!!

MrsKoala · 14/05/2018 18:46

I'm slightly jealous of flip flop wearers, I find them excruciatingly painful once i tried to brave it out and within hours my feet were black and blue - don't they hurt you all??

I wear birkenstock/papillion ones with a strap across the foot but get stupid tan lines. They are comfy tho. And i don't look like a geography teacher - i wish! I look like a SAHM who needs a hair wash most days. Blush

Semster · 14/05/2018 18:49

Nasty cheap flipflops - yes they're agony.

Nice flipflops with a wide strap and a fairly narrow post - very comfortable. I often walk the dog in them.

MrsKoala · 14/05/2018 18:54

The ones i tried were about £40 and i was told they were the really comfy ones and they still were agony (this was years ago so i have no idea what they were called, but i was determined to buy some comfy ones). As you walk doesn't all your weight slam that really sensitive bit between your toes into the post? I must walk wrong. Grin

TheFatkinsDiet · 14/05/2018 18:57

I don’t mind flip flops, but agree it wouldn’t look quite right in a very corporate office. They’re casual wear aren’t they? Somewhere more relaxed, I’d say fine. I’d probably say if it’s fine to wear denim where you work, then it’s also fine to wear flip flops.

Realistica · 14/05/2018 19:01

Sorry MrsKoala but given that millions of people wear them regularly without any issue, I do think you're probably walking wrong, yes!

Lweji · 14/05/2018 19:03

if it’s fine to wear denim where you work, then it’s also fine to wear flip flops.

Still no.

Realistica · 14/05/2018 19:06

If you work anywhere that's not shit, then it's fine to wear flip-flops.

RoadToRivendell · 14/05/2018 19:07

Flip flops are wildly variable, there are some that are indeed excruciating.

J.Crew used to make amazing flip flops but they've gone to shite.

I tend to wear Havianas now.

ThistleAmore · 14/05/2018 19:08

I work in a non-client facing role in tech, so we wear more or less whatever we want, and even WE draw the line at flipflops.

I love flipflops, but my feet are mine, and other people's feet are theirs.

GreySkiesAboveMe · 14/05/2018 19:11

I kayak for a living. Flipflops are normal in the summer
