to find flip-flops at work vulgar?

SummaLuvin · 14/05/2018 14:02

With the recent bout of hot weather we have been enjoying, there has been a proliferation of my colleagues who have deemed it acceptable to wear revealing sandals and flip-flops to work. I work in a corporate environment and find this overt display of naked foot highly unprofessional, not to mention vulgar. Quite frankly seeing Tony's hairy toes makes me want to heave. AIBU to find this outrageous?

In the bank last week a very large bank clerk was jigging her tattooed thong wearing foot in front of me

I missed the bit where her size was relevant to her flip flop wearing?

madmomma · 14/05/2018 15:23

It's obviously up to the individual what they wear, but I do find it refreshing when someone opts for a lightly covering summer outfit. It's just more restful on the eye IMO. I'm obviously getting old!

MrsKoala · 14/05/2018 15:24

When we lived in Vancouver everyone had 2 types of shoes, wellies and flip-flops. The office wear was virtually just beach wear in the summer and beachwear with wellies in the winter Grin .

"have you never been to a swimming baths"

another reason to avoid swimming baths....

RoadToRivendell · 14/05/2018 15:28

Avoid the US in summer. Americans love flip flops.

I wear them pretty much non-stop from June through August, but I"d fight shy of wearing them in a corporate environment. I'd not think twice about sandals, though.

Mind you, I have very nice feet. Wink

Beacauseisaidso · 14/05/2018 15:31

I don't get why showing your feet is unprofessional. Odd.

Elementtree · 14/05/2018 15:33

I wear flip flops all the time. I couldn't
give a stuff how pretty my feet look.

Realistica · 14/05/2018 15:35

I missed the bit where her size was relevant to her flip flop wearing?

It's related because they're both examples of ridiculous reasons to walk out of a bank without doing what you went in to do!

Notcontent · 14/05/2018 15:35

I find this odd as well.

In Australia flip flops are obviously very popular but they are seen as being very casual so in Australia i never encountered them in an office environment!!!!!

WomaninGreen · 14/05/2018 15:37

I've now got an ad for corporate workwear on the side of the screen Grin

TemptressofWaikiki · 14/05/2018 15:37

OP, I am so glad I don't work with someone so uptight as you. Feel better after hoiking up your judgy pants... Grin

TheClitterati · 14/05/2018 15:48

Are you Queen Victoria OP? Grin

TheClitterati · 14/05/2018 15:50

I have no problem with smart sandals on women though, with nicely painted nails.
What about the men? Do you think their nails have to be painted too?

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/05/2018 15:50

A member of senior management here often walks around barefoot. I'd give anything for him to at least wear flip flops Sad

Well kept feet in sandals, whether "revealing" or not, are fine. What's wrong with feet?

All sounding a bit Victorian.

Lweji · 14/05/2018 15:51

YANBU.

I live in a warm (quite hot in the Summer) country and nobody wears flip flops for work. Just the beach. They are way too casual.

Sandals are the way. For men or women.

taratill · 14/05/2018 15:54

As long as it's not crocs n socks, or any other form of summer footwear with socks, I see no issue here OP.

Culturally there may be some jobs where a standard of business dress requires more formality but other than that, and health and safety (think factories and wearhouses) I can't see any issue with it to be honest.

Kerry987 · 14/05/2018 15:57

Totally agree. Flip flops are for the house, beach or pool. Not sure why so many people wear them in the UK. I have never understand it.

LouiseCollins28 · 14/05/2018 16:12

Agree completely, really don't like this, very unprofessional IMO, particularly in a formal workplace. In our case the rule is "no open toes" so it doesn't arise, thank goodness!

Semster · 14/05/2018 16:38

Just to totally freak you out OP, at DD's school everyone wears flip flops from about April to November.

Semster · 14/05/2018 16:39

...including the teachers.

ememem84 · 14/05/2018 16:41

I’ve worn flip flops to work before. But current job says no flip flops.

I wear them to and from the office in the summer and around town if I’m out and about at lunchtime. I have sandals/open toe wedges which are acceptable though.

I always have feet pedicured too.

Eastcoastmost · 14/05/2018 16:42

Don’t mind flip flops. Do mind feet that are not well cared for, nasty infected nails, signs of athlete’s foot, dry skin...

Bunchofdaffodils · 14/05/2018 16:47

YANBU, I would say flip flops are unacceptable in most work environments (not all) but I’m a healthcare worker and my feet are baking right now. Dreaming of bare feet splashing in a pool Smile

VladmirsPoutine · 14/05/2018 16:58

Yanbu but yab hyperbolic, I suspect for effect.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 14/05/2018 17:05

Academia. Where what the hell we like! Hoorah!
