To think feminism has gone too far.

Mr Men books, Little Miss books. Why are they saying these children's books are giving the wrong impression to children. All the books we read as youngsters, are being dissected as being sexist. Snow white looking after the dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, needs a kiss from a Prince to wake her up. I love a man opening a door for me, to let me go first. My DH changes places with me so he's walking on the side of the pavement that is nearest the road. I know some of you are going to tear me to shreds, but I just had to say what I've been thinking for a long time.

OP posts:

I've just started working for a large sucessful company where 50% of management is female. When I mention this, people are shocked. Wow, really?? Amazing! Why is that? Half the popuation is female, we are in no way less smart or capable. Half the management should be female.

Feminism has not gone far enough, not even close.

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 10:48

I don't think hung used for capital punishment is actually wrong Beyond . The two forms used to be used interchangeably, which is probably why hung stuck for "hung drawn and quartered" which stopped happening before the orthodoxy that the verb should be regular for capital punishment and irregular for dangling inanimate objects developed ...

TheClitterati · 09/05/2018 10:49

Has your thread been savage enough for you so far OP? Grin
Do you feel better now?

Charmatt · 09/05/2018 10:49

I think OP is my MIL Grin

Last time we went over to see them my FIL asked us if we wanted a glass of wine. I said I didn't but said to my OH I would drive. MIL asked me if I had permission to drive 'his' car!

...I am not joking! Angry My reaction let her know I wasn't happy.

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 10:49

Thanks OP! I've never thought about the Mr Men thing, but you are right, they are terribly sexist.
MR MEN, but "little miss"? It's a fucking disgrace, to be honest. Thanks for raising my conciousness!

MillicentF · 09/05/2018 10:53

“I don't think the OP is saying feminism.is a bad thing”

I’m not sure what she is saying- which is why I asked.

mzcracker · 09/05/2018 10:55

From what I can gather from the op she is saying she thinks it's a shame that women don't appreciate men being chivalrous anymore.
That's all I'm getting.

Jux · 09/05/2018 10:56

Love that Mash Report ^, thanks for posting it ghosty

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 10:57

To me it reads that people have become pedantic, picking over fairly insignificant things like children's story books. I disagree because I think it's only a minority of people who focus on such things however I don't think criticising one perceived element of feminism is criticising it in general.

IronMansIronButt · 09/05/2018 10:57

Except soemthing about books and feminism has gone too far.

I can't understand the tiny mindset of someone who likes a man to open doors so thinks feminism has gone too far. Look around you woman! Feminism hasn't gone nearly far enough and nobody gives a shiny shit what you like your own man to do, nobody is trying to stop him.

ghostyslovesheets · 09/05/2018 10:58

fabulous isn't it Jux

MissReginaPhilange · 09/05/2018 11:00

facepalm

Why did I even read that

Lweji · 09/05/2018 11:00

About the books.
It's not nitpicking. Such books influence our children as they grow and instill prejudices and stereotypes in them.
We need to address these seemingly minor issues so that feminism can go as far as it should.
Or we'll be stuck forever on the nearly there but not quite.

Lweji · 09/05/2018 11:00

Or go back on it, which is even worse.

MissReginaPhilange · 09/05/2018 11:00

Not sure why that's tagged someone call facepalm .....

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 11:01

Mz most of her opening post is about Mr Men v Little Miss books and fairly tales...

As someone else says, things like that were more of a focus for feminism in the 1980s I think... The deep roots of sexism in children's literature and language used around and about children, which sets them up with internalised misogynistic and gender stereotyped assumptions...

I'm not sure how much it's a focus this decade, though its still worth being aware of and making following generations aware of - it's certainly not ground breaking, new or controversial! I remember teaching a unit on stereotyping in preschool TV programming when I taught media studies GCSE, but that was 15+ years ago!

TheClitterati · 09/05/2018 11:01

MR MEN, but "little miss"? It's a fucking disgrace, to be honest.

Indeed so patronising.

They are on the list of books I won't read to my DC - they are welcome to read anything themselves but I will not put myself through the dreariness of reading Mr Men/Little Miss books aloud - they are soo tedious.

Charmatt · 09/05/2018 11:01

I agree that the issue of th Mr Men and Little Misses books is pedantic. The issue I have with them is that they are all very poorly written and are incredibly boring to read or listen to!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 11:03

I don't thinkntheres anything wrong woth fairytales as long as child also have more modern stories to readdress things. A lot of classic literature portrays women in a way in which we wouldn't want to be seen today. In some ways it can be useful to.show the progress that's been made.

I don't think feminism has gone nearly far enough to be honest. You can fob it off all you want about Mr Tickle versus Little Miss Scatterbrain (and look at the undertones there - "Little Miss"... and the choices of character - Scatterbrain, Chatterbox, Giggles) but it's much more than that and if you weren't such a blatant wind up merchant desperate to get your arse handed to you in AIBU so you can say "told you so meany pantses" you'd realise that.

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2018 11:04

To me it reads that people have become pedantic, picking over fairly insignificant things like children's story books

Anything that influences children isn't significant. Books aren't in a vacuum, they're indicative of wider, societal thinking and it isn't a negative to refer to books that have aged and explain why they have.

53rdWay · 09/05/2018 11:05

Also, Sleeping Beauty being awoken with a kiss is itself a ‘modern’ change to the story. (Late 17th century anyway.) In earlier versions the prince has sex with her while she’s sleeping, she gets pregnant and gives birth to twins while she’s sleeping, and one of the newborn twins while trying to feed sucks on her finger and pulls out the thorn and she wakes up.

Not really relevant to whatever the OP thinks feminism is but interesting anyway!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 11:07

Fairy tales have pretty gruesome roots!

BuntyII · 09/05/2018 11:10

Great, now just call up the 1 in 4 women who have experienced domestic violence and tell them its all ok though because you like having the door opened for you Biscuit
