Mr Men books, Little Miss books. Why are they saying these children's books are giving the wrong impression to children. All the books we read as youngsters, are being dissected as being sexist. Snow white looking after the dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, needs a kiss from a Prince to wake her up. I love a man opening a door for me, to let me go first. My DH changes places with me so he's walking on the side of the pavement that is nearest the road. I know some of you are going to tear me to shreds, but I just had to say what I've been thinking for a long time.

OP posts:
ThisIsTheFirstStep · 09/05/2018 10:21

Your preferences are your own. Nothing wrong with that.

Nothing to do with feminism though.

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 10:22

Coral you posted something goady in AIBU. If you've used MN for a while you'll know how AIBU works. You could have phrased it differently in chat if you'd wanted a discussion rather than to be told YABU when you are. If you'd genuinely wanted a discussion on the subject of feminism perhaps feminism chat might have been a place to go looking for that...

The responses you have got are not bullying - you posted something unreasonable in Am I Being Unreasonable and have been told why you are being unreasonable. You could read a wide range of other posts on AIBU to see that that is how it works.

Morphene · 09/05/2018 10:23

Well I was all set to point out all the issues to the OP but it is certainly unnecessary given the amount that's already been written. I agree a pile on is unappealing.

Lweji · 09/05/2018 10:27

Too right. I was just thinking the other day that I have far too much freedom and equality. Fuck, I'm almost paid the same as my male counterpart and my DH did the laundry without calling it woman's work. Time to put an end to this feminist thing.

Grin

Yes! It's bloody time we all go back to obeying our husbands.

ShastaBeast · 09/05/2018 10:27

It’s ok to like books that are traditional and therefore offer a sexist slant. As long as you are intelligent enough to see it for what it is. And frame it in that way for your kids. Feminism should not be about telling us what to do or like, it should be seen as freeing people to choose - men included.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 09/05/2018 10:27

Its ok ilike i might keep it anyway Grin

EdmundCleverClogs · 09/05/2018 10:28

Coralcolouredchrome how precisely have you been bullied here? You post something provocative on AIBU, what replies where you genuinely expecting?

Lweji · 09/05/2018 10:30

I guess bad boys that treat women like shit are the popular choice. I’d call a guy who wouldn’t stand up for a pregnant woman on a train, an absolute pig!

I would call another woman who doesn't stand up for a pregnant woman on a train a pig too. Or anyone who doesn't stand up to anyone who clearly needs or asks for a seat.

It's not a feminist issue.

porkiepiesky · 09/05/2018 10:32

there is honest, and then there is savagery I haven't come across since I was at school, just goes to show, bullies can be encountered at any stage in your life.

Oh give over OP, no one has bullied you.

UpstartCrow · 09/05/2018 10:34

This thread is really interesting. It fits a pattern I've noticed where people who complain about the things feminism is doing give examples from the 1980's and 90's.

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 10:37

I actually think this thread is a set up - Coral mentions expecting to be torn to shreds in the opening post.

Coral is your DH the finished article then? Apart from protecting you from falling into the road, does he pull is weight with 50% of the domestic load, setting a good example for your DS and showing there is no need for feminism any more? Presumably your teenage son does the same share around the house as he would if he were a teenage daughter? Or are you saying standing on the outside of the pavement and standing up to let a pregnant woman sit are instead of carrying an equal share of the domestic load?

Or would that be going too far?

FairNotFair · 09/05/2018 10:38

Is it wrong that I'm reading the OP's posts in the voice of Little Britain's Emily Howard?

BeyondParody · 09/05/2018 10:38

I really must point out to everyone (okay, quite a few people) that it's hanged not hung...

Til everyone gets that right, feminism hasn't gone far enough.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 10:39

I actually think this thread is a set up -Coralmentions expecting to be torn to shreds in the opening post.

You ought to report it then.

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 10:41

Not always it isn't Beyond , or did you mean in the case of capital punishment?

BeyondParody · 09/05/2018 10:42

Well yes, in the example of hanged, drawn and quartered

ghostyslovesheets · 09/05/2018 10:42

there is honest, and then there is savagery I haven't come across since I was at school, just goes to show, bullies can be encountered at any stage in your life

you have had a sheltered life so far then - you have no idea what bullying is!

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/05/2018 10:44

Ilike a post can be a set up without that being the only thing a poster uses MN for. A regular poster can still set up a thread to go a certain way. What good would reporting do in that case? I'm not troll hunting - the fact the OP isn't a troll as such doesn't mean he or she hasn't set this particular thread up to go a certain way so he or she can feel vindicated or just enjoy the attention.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2018 10:44

I don’t see bullying. I see a person, who purposely came on here with a bunch of misinformed prejudices, mansplaining (even if they are a woman) and looking for a fight.

Don’t worry dear. Feminism will all be over in a jiffy once the TRA’s, who want us dead have obliterated us. HTH.

crazycatgal · 09/05/2018 10:45

You're right! I love being catcalled and objectified in the street, it makes me feel like a valued member of society.

SeaWitchly · 09/05/2018 10:45

Shoxfordian that quote is absolutely brilliant.

I have never seen it before, it deserves posting far and wide.

LineyErgoSum · 09/05/2018 10:46

Feminism is A Bad Thing because it alarms the OP. Like ants, or Trump's comb-over. Is that the argument?

It's not very, erm, advanced, is it?

mzcracker · 09/05/2018 10:47

You've had views. The majority disagree with you. Since when did disagreeing with an opinion become bullying?

Manners are manners regardless of gender. I don't mind a man holding a door open but I'd do the same for a man. It's manners and general politeness I really don't think any of those things are signs that feminism has gone too far.
As for Snow White and all that other garbage, they are sexist. This is because they were written decades and decades ago when times were different. Disney's snowwhite first came out in the 40's iirc. It was a different world and we have to hold those things up to different standards. I think it's a good thing. Long may it continue..we need to question the attitudes of the past or how will there ever be change.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 10:47

I don't think the OP is saying feminism.is a bad thing

StrangeLookingParasite · 09/05/2018 10:48

Oh God, I've dared to have an opinion, that is so monstrous, MNs are going to hang, draw and quarter me for daring to air it in public.

No, you've offered an opinion, and people have disagreed. Please do not overdramatise the situation.
