To wish the EU would throw us a bone so we can cancel Brexit

They don't want us to leave. We don't want to leave. So what could Macron'n'Merkel offer us so we can say "go on, we'll stay together for the sake of the kids".

I keep saying , but just like the government nobody is listening, I just want controlled immigration not FOM

Brexit doesn’t achieve controlled immigration. It means we need to rewrite laws around immigration, it means that checks and balances that could and should have been in place already through Westminster have to be done (which could and should have been done without the need for Brexit) and that our entire legislature needs to be rewritten to manage Brexit. How much do you think that will cost?

How much do you think immigrants feeling unwelcome and leaving will cost?

And most of all, the UK being viewed as a racist country in the eyes of the rest of the world. Being known for intolerance and hatred, because that’s their impression of us now. What will be the human cost of that?

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 14:43

Smeddum But why did we let it get to this stage then, if you say we would be knackered without immigration, so all these people could return home at a moments notice if their economy explodes and wages go sky high. It would leave the U.K. in a bad position, what a way to run your country , dependant on foreign labour

MightyMucks · 09/05/2018 14:44

It’s the cost of housing and living in general that is the problem. Not simply low wages.

Yes, and what do you think more people means for housing? More demand. And what does more demand do? Push up prices.

RoadToRivendell · 09/05/2018 14:45

@user1486062886 so to prevent FOM you’re willing to compromise on the trade agreement, the funding the EU gives the UK, the advantages of being part of a union which means we’re politically, economically and socially stronger?

I find this pretty funny, actually. It's just going to take one viable Eurosceptic candidate in France or Italy to topple the whole thing (not I exclude Germany from this equation, because we know the EU is their national religion and the Euro their subsidiser in chief!).

We're well shot of it.

RoadToRivendell · 09/05/2018 14:45

^sorry - note rather than not above

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 14:46

Once again ignoring the fact that uk needs foreign workers. Should they sleep in the street to free up housing?

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 14:46

@user1486062886 there’s no “we” about it. I don’t have a problem with immigration.
We, as a nation, are reliant on immigrant labour because British workers (for whatever reason) aren’t filling the vacancies. DP comes from an area heavily dependent on farming (fruit and tatties mostly). He and his family used to work the farms but now it’s all immigrant labour. Because the farmers can’t find anyone who wants to do the work unless they’re an immigrant.

And yes, if every immigrant in the UK left tomorrow we would be fucked. Absolutely on our knees.

It’s a shame that wasn’t considered before this ridiculous referendum.

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 14:46

Smeddum So why haven’t the gov not been doing it ? Is it because they would get called the racist party like we all do when we voice our concerns over immigration ?

cindersrella · 09/05/2018 14:47

I want to leave.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 14:47

Yes, and what do you think more people means for housing? More demand. And what does more demand do? Push up prices

You know what alleviates demand? Social housing, investment in affordable housing. None of which the Tories have done, so what makes you think Brexit will change anything?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 14:48

Your concerns over immigration are unfounded.

RoadToRivendell · 09/05/2018 14:48

You are not listening to the fact that the government can already control immigration and that immigration is vital to the economy

The government can control non-EU migration, and have done it very badly. I agree. I further agree that controlled immigration is vital to the economy.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 14:48

So why haven’t the gov not been doing it ? Is it because they would get called the racist party like we all do when we voice our concerns over immigration?

I don’t understand what you mean, that doesn’t make sense. Can you rephrase it please? What is the it the government haven’t been doing?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 14:49

So once again you didn’t need to brexit to control immigration

I keep saying , but just like the government nobody is listening, I just want controlled immigration not FOM

How will the proposed 'soft border' in NI control immigration? EU citizens are free to enter Dublin and then drive/train/walk across the open border to NI (remember no infrastructure) from which they can take a plane / boat (again unhindered, DUP requirement) to any other part of the UK they so choose.

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 14:50

Smeddum So who done the picking before the influx of cheap foreign labour, it was all picked then, I used to go strawberry picking in the day, what do you think is the reason for British workers not wanting to do the work, and please don’t say we are lazy

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 14:52

They do other work. HTH

RoadToRivendell · 09/05/2018 14:52

Because the farmers can’t find anyone who wants to do the work unless they’re an immigrant.

I think the use of the word 'want' in this context is wildly euphemistic. No one wants to clean toilets, collect rubbish, pick fruit, wipe bottoms, etc. Rather, they're paid sufficiently to induce them to do so.

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 14:52

HappyHugs It’s not up to me, direct that question to are very well educated Mp’s, I haven’t got time to do their job as well, how would I post on here😀

RoadToRivendell · 09/05/2018 14:54

So once again you didn’t need to brexit to control immigration

Sorry, have I said somewhere that I'm a fan of Teresa May and that i think she did a fabulous job as Home Secretary? You seem to be pulling me up on a point I didn't make.

Immigration has reached a feverish pitch in the past three or so years (give or take). The non-EU immigration had to be addressed at some point, along with EU immigration.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/05/2018 14:54

MPs haven’t got a solution. So that’s brexiteers and politicians passing the buck on NI

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 14:54

@user1486062886 influx is a typically dehumanising word for a start, it’s inflammatory and emotive.

There was a rise in immigration because workers were recruited by UK companies because they couldn’t find the British labour to meet demand. Why they didn’t want to do the work is beyond me, but the fact remains that they were choosing not to.

I can’t think of another reason beyond laziness, can you?

The vast majority of immigrants come here to work, and to work doing the jobs that British people see as beneath them or something they’re not prepared to do.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 14:56

The non-EU immigration had to be addressed at some point, along with EU immigration

That may be true, but Brexit solves neither. Non EU immigration is unaffected by Brexit and everything to do with loopholes in UK legislation.

And FOM won’t be controlled by Brexit because there will be no border with the EU because the NIrish/Irish border can’t be a hard border therefore won’t be able to control anything.

Which was known before Brexit.

MissionItsPossible · 09/05/2018 14:58

@GhostofFrankGrimes
Your concerns over immigration are unfounded.

Prime example of why it went the way it did. The poster has told you they have concerns against the level of immigration and yet all you keep saying is the government could have put restrictions if they wanted to. Yes, they could have. They chose not to. And when people raised their concerns and creeping uneasiness of the level of immigration they were told to stop being so racist and that their concerns were unfounded. They didn't listen. It seems people are still refusing to listen.

user1486062886 · 09/05/2018 14:59

GhostofFrankGrimes Sorry I didn’t realise it was my job to do, that’s why I voted my local MP in and there are all them clever civil servants in the HOP
