To think thong bikini bottoms are obscene

These swimsuits seem popular all of a sudden, and women have no problem getting their bums out at swimming pools or public beaches.

I personally think they're too much and I don't want to see anyone's bum cheeks. I probably sound jealous or like an old lady, but even if I had the body of a supermodel I wouldn't wear it. I feel embarrassed with a small hint of cleavage!

They're also not very flattering, even on the most attractive bodies. I just think they look cheap and tacky and I wonder when it became acceptable to wear something so revealing in public. AIBU?

I'd be furious if someone left sweat stains from a bare arse on my furniture. An arse that could have just been sat on a toilet.

Where exactly is someone in a thong going to be sitting on furniture to cause this issue?

On a beach if you're going to a cafe then you'll put on shorts. Although you've got sweaty thighs which aren't tremendously different to sweaty buttocks

Where else is someone in a thong going to come into contact with anything other than their beach towel?

If a random is in a thong in your front room trying to sit on your furniture I think you've more to worry about than bare arse stains!

Dustysparrow · 08/05/2018 12:10

I think if I saw anybody (male or female) wearing a thing at our local pool I would think they had lost the plot. I wouldn't say I'm prudish at all (I'm honestly not), but I just think they look tacky as hell and I would have to assume the wearer was a bit of an attention seeker. I reckon if you want your butt cheeks hanging out then a nudist beach is probably your best bet, not the local leisure centre. That said, I don't like bikini's on little kids either, but I reckon many would disagree with me. Each to their own I guess.

Dustysparrow · 08/05/2018 12:13

A thong - not a thing!!

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 12:34

I will defend a woman’s right to wear whatever shit she wants to, but really - do women wake up one day and decide they want to expose their sexual characteristics in public? Or do they follow a fashion invented by men, for men? There will be some desperate for an all over tan but very few.

Eolian · 08/05/2018 12:37

I think they look tacky, attention-seeking and a bit silly even on someone with an impeccable behind. Not oscene/revolting etc though - that's a bit of an overreaction imo!

Orlandointhewilderness · 08/05/2018 12:39

YANBU.

GorgonLondon · 08/05/2018 12:39

@hideandgo No harsher critics of women than women

Except I didn't specify women. It was women and men showing far too much flesh.

Lweji you have totally wrongly put a racist slant on my post that was not there at all. It's out of order for you to do that.

I wanted to describe the style and beauty of the woman I saw and it was partly the gorgeous contrast between her electric blue dress and her very dark skin that created such a stunning impression.

As it happens it was only people with pink skin I saw mostly naked in the park. There are loads of Indian, Persian, Egyptian, Turkish and Japanese people round here but none of them walk around nearly-naked

OohMavis · 08/05/2018 12:40

At a swimming pool I'd be a bit taken aback at bare arsecheeks. If that makes me a prude then I'm cool with it.

On a beach though anything goes surely?

Lweji · 08/05/2018 12:46

@Gorgon
"What a contrast to all of the lumpy pinkisj flesh on show in my local park today in the middle of a London suburb."

You singled out the pinkish flesh.

GorgonLondon · 08/05/2018 12:50

Did you read my detailed explanation immediately above your post there or do you just like implying that people are racist?

It was indeed a massive visual contrast and nothing at all wrong with describing it accurately.

As I said none of the people round here with non-pink skin seem to strip off in the local park as soon as the temp goes over 20 degrees.

stevie69 · 08/05/2018 13:09

Definitely shouldn't be allowed in swimming pools, everyone can surely purchase a cheap sporty, low cut round the legs cossie for there!

Indeed I can purchase such a garment but ..... why should I have to?

Emma198 · 08/05/2018 13:12

"Sexual characteristics". @Namesallgone18 you're part of the issue calling bumcheeks sexual charaxteristics. It's just bumcheeks.

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 13:45

and boobs are just boobs. But they are also (secondary?) sexual characteristics.

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 13:46

Are you allowed to wear them in French municipal pools? I know men aren’t allowed loose trunks - that is hygiene related not modesty as the ones that are acceptable are much more revealing!

Lweji · 08/05/2018 14:12

and boobs are just boobs. But they are also (secondary?) sexual characteristics.

Yes, but bum cheeks are present in men and women. Even though women have wider hips in general, they are not substantially different.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 14:15

Did you read my detailed explanation immediately above your post there or do you just like implying that people are racist?

I didn't imply racism. You have.

My comment had nothing to do with racism. One was towards only good looking people being allowed to dress in a certain way, and the other the current attitudes against pale skin.
I pointed out that white (pinkish) skin is seen as undesirable, as demonstrated on your post.

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 08/05/2018 14:18

At least if all the fat old arses are hanging around on the beach they won't be filling MumsNet with crappy posts!!

Emma198 · 08/05/2018 14:19

Actually @Namesallgone18 boobs are for feeding babies. Would you have an issue with a bare chested man?

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 14:38

It is my mistake to refer to them as sexual characteristics, the correct term is sex characteristics, and refer to see differences that appear with the onset of puberty (so, boobs in women and no a topless woman isn’t the same in the UK as a topless man and yes, I’ve lots of experience of using them to feed babies!)
So probably bottoms are not a secondary characteristic at all except in as much as the shape of women’s will change post puberty.

PrimalLass · 08/05/2018 15:19

Indeed I can purchase such a garment but ..... why should I have to?

Because absolutely nobody wants to see your arse.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 15:21

Because absolutely nobody wants to see your arse.

You really can't say that. Wink Grin

PrimalLass · 08/05/2018 15:22

Ok 99% of people then.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 15:25

I'd hazard a guess at 49% that don't at best.

PrimalLass · 08/05/2018 15:27

Mumsnet should run a survey.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 15:49

Mumsnet should run a survey.

Sure, but it's largely missing on 50% of the population.
