To think thong bikini bottoms are obscene

These swimsuits seem popular all of a sudden, and women have no problem getting their bums out at swimming pools or public beaches.

I personally think they're too much and I don't want to see anyone's bum cheeks. I probably sound jealous or like an old lady, but even if I had the body of a supermodel I wouldn't wear it. I feel embarrassed with a small hint of cleavage!

They're also not very flattering, even on the most attractive bodies. I just think they look cheap and tacky and I wonder when it became acceptable to wear something so revealing in public. AIBU?

I don't understand why so many people find the mere sight of ordinary human bodies repulsive. No one is forcing anyone to have any physical contact with them Hmm

catherinedevalois · 08/05/2018 07:44

I can understand thongs under trousers ie no vpl but on the beach! With all that sand! Ugh

Gregpenguin · 08/05/2018 07:44

Personally I don’t like them. I think they look cheap. But each to there own

Laiste · 08/05/2018 07:57

My first (accidental !) visit to a nudist beach was a real revelation to me. It was weird for the first hour, but after that you realise the complete lack of clothes is less titillating or eye catching than people in little bits of fabric. No one gawped at any one else and everyone got on with their day on the beach/ball games ect.

99.9% of the bodies were less than perfect (that included the 20 somethings) and it felt very liberating. Clothes say a lot about us and our status and there was none of that. It sounds hippy'ish but that's really how it felt. It was definitely not nauseating, repulsive or obscene. It was the total opposite in fact.

I wouldn't want to stay in a full on nudest colony - but for the beach? I was pleasantly surprised.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 08/05/2018 08:00

We used to do go to beaches in France a lot when we were kids. It wasn't the thongs that amazed us - it was the really hairy men that made us gawp (look mummmmmm - he'd so hairyyyyyy!)

RhiWrites · 08/05/2018 08:51

This thread makes me want to buy a thong.

It’s only bodies. Bodies shouldn’t be ‘obscene’ or ‘nasty’ or ‘cheap’. I’d rather be in a thong than the judgy pants being worn on this thread.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 08/05/2018 09:02

They don't look comfy though.

Littlechocola · 08/05/2018 09:12

Obscene on me because I would spend the whole time pulling them out of my backside and pulling them to one side.

TSSDNCOP · 08/05/2018 09:13

Laiste one of my favourite afternoons ever, having also arrived unknowingly at s French nudist beach, was watching naked people trying to get onto lilos and into rubber dinghies. Bless them.

MoleskinMittens · 08/05/2018 09:20

If I tried wearing one I don't think I'd find it again! I remember my friend and I being horrified at the sight of an Italian man on a beach in Mexico playing volleyball in a leopard print one. As long as the thong wearer has the perfect arse, they should go for it!

DuchyDuke · 08/05/2018 09:22

They never look obscene on perfect bums. A lot of jealousy on this thread.

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 09:29

Duchyduke a quick google says obscene means offensive or disgusting by accepted standards of morality and decency
Nothing to do with “but it’s not if you look great”. If someone finds it offensive to see someone’s boobs, arse (or genitalia for that matter) it does not matter how beautiful the items may be. Or could that be a defensive for flashing perhaps, my willy is gorgeous and anyone who doesn’t want to see it is just jealous?

Namechangedname · 08/05/2018 09:36

They obviously think they look hot to trot, good for them. Can't get worked up about it.

DuchyDuke · 08/05/2018 09:54

@names - by that logic surely everyone in the UK would wear burkas and chadars as some people find it offensive to look at faces, but that’s not the case is it? People like you should stop focussing on what other people think and let everyone live and let live. Yes I do believe there is a lot of jealousy on this thread.

Laiste · 08/05/2018 09:57

TSSDNCOP - actually lol'd at that Grin I bet the air was alive with squeeeeeeegue noises!

Namesallgone18 · 08/05/2018 09:59

Duchy the definition I quoted said “by accepted standards” - hence how a ankle was once offensive but now isn’t.
And less of the “people like you” comment please, you know f all about me.

flufffysockks · 08/05/2018 10:02

Thong bikinis are not my thing, I'm quite body conscious and just prefer to wear a bikini that covers up more.

However, I think anyone who wears a thong bikini looks fab. It should be celebrated that those women are comfortable in their own skin and are not bothered what people like you think.

It's just an arse. Everyone's got one.

Stripybeachbag · 08/05/2018 10:04

I agree with the OP, they look awful and you can't help but cop an eyeful on the beach.

Funny on mumsnet how a woman can wear what she wants on the beach, men can't and there is a special place in hell for people who dress their kids in pyjamas after swimming.

Lethaldrizzle · 08/05/2018 10:04

When I see one of these bums on display I can't forget its connection to one of our main biogical functions! Just put it away!

GorgonLondon · 08/05/2018 10:12

@DuchyDuke They never look obscene on perfect bums. A lot of jealousy on this thread.

I'll ask you the same question I asked @Bluntness earlier (she didn't respond): I think it's revolting to see hanging man boobs with hairy nipples, foul sweaty builder's bum arse cracks, and pendulous beer bellies. Would that be because of jealousy too?

Hideandgo · 08/05/2018 10:14

I’ve no problem with how it looks, people can wear what they want. But I think it’s a pity WHY people wear clothes like this. It’s not because they are exercising their freedom to wear what they like.

biscuitraider · 08/05/2018 10:15

I think that too lethal, i just don't think it's the cleanest part of our bodies. I would object to someone's practically bare arse sitting on any of my chairs anyway.

Hideandgo · 08/05/2018 10:17

You guys are way too worried about this hygiene thing advertising has ingrained in us. I’m sure a crab shat and rat pissed exactly where you’ve walked in your bare feet....

jellycat1 · 08/05/2018 10:21

I completely agree OP. It's much sexier to leave something to the imagination. Ok not everyone in a thong bikini is trying to be sexy - I'm sure some genuinely just want an all over tan - but a good number will be.

Idontdowindows · 08/05/2018 10:24

Everyone and their brother were wearing them in the '80s.

I'm not fond of being surrounded by oodles of bare bums, I must say.
