Is it stingy to host a bbq and not provide alcohol?

I will provide all the food and side dishes etc and soft drinks, but aibu to not provide alcohol? I don't drink and one of my friends is a heavy drinker and will probably guzzle the lot, plus booze is so expensive as some only drink wine.

When our family have. Bbq we always ask them to bring something each... It becomes quite expensive otherwise. Soft drinks are provided, but anything stronger that they want they bring.

Last time I looked branded Fanta and Coca Cola were £1 for a 2litre bottle.

Don't know anywhere that sells 4 cans of lager for £1. But there again unless it is in the last aisle of Lidl and I am queuing for the self service tills I don't think I ever venture down those aisles

No what ever happened to bring a bottle

Oliversmumsarmy - True, but not everyone likes Fanta and Coke. Or value orange juice. Stuff like elderflower presse or fancy organic fruit juices will cost £3 or so; you can get a four pack of lager or cider in Lidl/Tesco/Sainsbury's for a bit less than that.

And if someone doesn't want alcohol but does want fancy soft drinks as opposed to 'ordinary' ones, I don't think it's at all unreasonable for them to bring what they prefer.

I have been to all sorts of BBQs from one of those trays with charcoal on the balcony of a tower block to £10 million pound homes with a state of the art fire pits and the "poshest" drink I have ever had was a cranbury juice
Plenty of Pepsi and Sprite but definitely lacking in the elderflower presse department

a friend of mine recently went to a BBQ of a relatively well off couple who asked people to bring their own meat to BBQ!!

'@expatinscotland I’ve never said I have an issue with alcohol - so........
Just said it isn’t tight and the fact you’re telling people they need alcohol for a BBQ is just pathetic.
I don’t drink - some friends do, some friends don’t. Sometimes there’s alcohol but sometimes there isn’t and we have a a bloody brilliant time with or without alcohol. '

Sarah I really don't get your personal problem with me here or the fact that you zeroed in on me to be silly and insulting. I have not told people they need alcohol for a BBQ anywhere, but some people prefer it. Nor have I said BYOB BBQs are wrong, quite the opposite. Have been to plenty of alcohol-free BBQs due to having Muslim friends. They're fine, a BBQ. Get a grip.
