To think it's impossible to make some homes nice?

InteriorDespairer · 01/05/2018 12:52

I've recently begun trying to make my home a bit nicer- I live in a tiny one bedroom flat with a balcony with my DH, and try as I might to make it actually a nice place to be, it's beginning to feel like an exercise in futility.

Let's start with the bathroom. It has no windows, and a tiled floor- the builders did a crappy job of grouting the tiles, it comes out in huge chunks so there are loads of gaps, and there is some on the tiles which I just haven't been able to shift which means parts of the floor just always look dirty. The tiles are grey with a sort of grainy texture to them. It's a tiny room with no storage at all, I bought this little floor tidy to put things in as it was about the only thing that would fit, but the room still manages to look cluttered. One of the light fittings has never worked either.

We have a combined kitchen/sitting room with wooden floors which were poorly fitted so in winter/when its cold you can't move an inch without them creaking like crazy. The washing machine makes so much noise at times it's pointless trying to watch TV or pay attention to anything else.

We have floor-to-ceiling windows with no windowsills and cheap vertical blinds like these. Same in the bedroom. All the windows are south facing and the blinds are practically transparent so on sunny days it gets absurdly hot.

The furniture - DH bought the place before we got together and furnished it like a typical cash-strapped bachelor with chunky black Ikea furniture as far as the eye can see, and the world's ugliest beige sofa. The black furniture shows up every speck of dust and fingerprint, so sometimes it feels like painting the Forth bridge trying to keep it looking nice! We do have a lovely bureau which I inherited when my GPs died but next to all the black Ikea stuff it just looks odd and out of place.

The bedroom - also tiny, we have a (chunky black Ikea) kingsize bed, a massive wardrobe (same again), chest of drawers in front of the window and a small bedside unit.

Hallway - essentially just an empty space, occasionally occupied by the clothes horse. Not enough room for any furniture.

The balcony - also pretty small with a glass wall, impossible to hang anything from (unless I use cable ties) because of the flat, roughly 2-inch wide rail along the inside. We don't tend to spend a great deal of time out there anyway because of the kids who play outside and scream their heads off until about 10 p.m. and our downstairs neighbours whose cigarette and weed smoke comes straight up at us.

I just don't know how to make it into a nice home. I keep it clean and tidy, have tried not to clutter it up with too much 'decorative' stuff but it's just never a particularly warm or inviting place to be. I can't afford to start replacing furniture, I did buy a throw for the sofa but because the sofa cushions don't even fucking fit it just looked messy.

Does anyone else feel like this about their home? Can anyone make any suggestions from how I might transform mine? It's getting thoroughly depressing at this point.

So your DH bought ugly shit furniture and fitted nasty blinds?

I’m sure the flat would be much nicer with nicer furniture and blinds.

SoyDora · 01/05/2018 20:15

With a place that size you really need as little clutter as possible.

Bluelady · 01/05/2018 20:20

It's too small for two people, isn't it, OP? I stand by what I said about throwing a rug, cushions and curtains at it. You can take it all with you, floor length curtains will fit new windows, regardless of size - all mine are full length even where the windows aren't.

Furano · 01/05/2018 20:21

Have seen the photos. I don’t think the actual flat is too bad - you two are just really messy and have too much stuff for a one bed flat and haven’t bothered to get and decent furniture!

The bathroom is a totaly normal size - it needs shelves or a cupboard on the wall. All that stuff just out and cluttered is what makes it look bad.

You can re grout the bathroom floor yourself. I did that in my last house.

If it’s a shared ownership flat you have to accept that everything was done as cheap as possible and work around that.

InteriorDespairer · 01/05/2018 20:22

Bedroom- the bed takes up virtually the entire room, the wardrobe takes up 75% of what’s left. We’ve got 5 under-bed boxes under the bed. DH is all his wisdom hung the full length mirror behind the door. His is the big overflowing laundry basket that is falling apart, mine is the smaller white one.

You’ve actually got a decent amount of storage for a one bed flat - three built in cupboards.

M0RVEN · 01/05/2018 20:24

You have LOADS of wall space that you could use for storage.eg bathroom walls and above the door, in the hallway and that area where the Tv is. Move the tea pots to a display shelf and use the tops of units for boxes with lids.

I think you are looking to out more open storage on the floor when you need closed storage it on the walls instead.

Sell the sofa and get a small one. Ditto the oversized bedroom furniture .

Gumtree and Facebook selling pages are your friends.

I agree that you need to declutter.

And tell your husband to put his smelly sportswear on the washing machine and run it like normal people do .

Furano · 01/05/2018 20:26

Decent amount of storage in your bedroom too!

I think there must be other issues at play rather than the flat because it seems like a decent flat to me.

InteriorDespairer · 01/05/2018 20:27

And these are what’s left.

Have at it!

Actually I’d keep the pax wardrobe but change the two middle doors for mirrored ones.

But sell the Malm bed and get one of these ottoman divan ones.

I can’t get over how bare your walls are. And why are they all painted white ?

Rawhh · 01/05/2018 20:27

I agree whole heartedly. We have lived in places that are less pristine than our current flat but they felt like they had a soul (I wouldn't normally use such a term but that's the best I can come up with)

Our current house makes me feel miserable. I don't know what it is - it doesn't matter what I but or do it doesn't feel homely.

I think it might be the massively disproportionate rooms i.e a kitchen that's slightly too small to be a kitchen diner so loads of empty floor but a long that is too small. The bedrooms barely fit double beds in (no chance of wardrobes) but the landing is huge.

Or the lack of light - shaded on all Windows.

Or the lack of outdoor space.

Kismett · 01/05/2018 20:30

Oh wow, I think you actually have more space than we did! I'd definitely ditch some art in favor of wall storage, and cut down on knickknacks.

We don't have any cupboards even in our new house.

SmashedMug · 01/05/2018 20:34

I think it's lovely apart from the bedroom and the blank wall in the bathroom. The kitchen/living area looks cosy to me. Maybe some nice cosy lights for nighttime to make it extra snuggy. The bedroom definitely needs to feel warmer and more cosy though!

Looks pretty good to me!

InteriorDespairer · 01/05/2018 20:38

To whichever PP said we’re really messy- are you kidding?! This is pristine compared to how it has looked before. It took back breaking work to get it this nice.

The cupboards are filled thus: hallway, left cupboard contains our Christmas tree, the box with my wedding dress, my veil, the step ladder, almost all my books and dvds, a few pairs of wellies and a few other bits

Right cupboard has the boiler, mop, bucket, vacuum cleaner, bbq set and most of my shoes.

Living room cupboard has two spare dining table chairs, mine and DHs coats, my camping gear, mine and DHs rucksacks, the folding chairs for the balcony, a box of books and my little TV.

Ikea is your friend here! Get 2 of the wall mounted mirrored cupboards for the wall above the sink and toilet in the bathroom, it'll get rid of all the clutter below and brighten it up. Coloured pedestal mats for both the toilet and sink to brighten it up and hide the floor a bit, then the matching bathmat. Ikea used to have really bright, large pedestal mats but they've got rid of a lot of the colours now. You can still get some though. Personally I'd get rid of the screen and get a bright shower curtain in there too. The bit of wall in the bathroom opposite the taps I'd put a big cheap canvas type picture on, something bright.
In the hallway under the entryphone I'd put a table in white or grey with flowers or a plant on. Fake if necessary.
In the living room you need a BIG tv stand with storage, Ikea do one with drawers and a matching bridging shelf for above that might look good. Get all the dvd's put away and just something minimal on display, tea light holders or little tiny plants in pots.
The good thing about having all Ikea already is that you could probably buy just doors for the wardrobes, I'd go mirrored again.
The walls and artwork do look a bit dreary, brighten everything up there. A vase with flowers on the coffee table maybe?
What are the cupboards stuffed full of? You seem to have a lot of cupboard space so you could get things like the wash baskets put away in there. I'd put a rug in the hallway and one in the living room, neutral colours.

WipsGlitter · 01/05/2018 20:41

Get rid of the books and DVD's. Can you put the bed so it is facing the wardrobes? Get curtains or even voile to cover the window. Get some of those hook over window boxes for the balcony. Use your vouchers for a nice rug and cushions.

And declutter.

NameChanger22 · 01/05/2018 20:43

It doesn't look as bad as you described at first.

I would change the blinds to curtains and get rid of the black furniture. I would also paint the doors white or a pale colour. The walls need some really nice art - you can make that yourself.

Check out Pinterest for ideas, create a board of stuff you love on there and try to replicate it in your home. Lots of things you can make for free or nearly free.

starryoctopus · 01/05/2018 20:45

Google shaker unit from arg9s. white storage box that will go perfect for under the side of sink for bits and bobs you got like bleach sprays etc. Buy marvle effect or whatever effect sticky back that you can cover ir furniture in

InteriorDespairer · 01/05/2018 20:46

This is with our two lamps on. Yep we’re watching Suits.

X posted about the cupboard space. Are you using it to maximum potential? Shelves, hooks, big old toybox type storage for currently unused shoes etc?
Your balcony is lovely by the look of it, long thin planters on the floor with green conifer type plants?
I'd spend the JL vouchers too on stuff you can take, nice cushions for the sofa, artwork, towels and bathmats in a colour you like and all matching, that sort of thing.

Kismett · 01/05/2018 20:47

You could probably fit a small shoe cabinet somewhere. Ikea has them in different sizes but other places do as well, we got one from Argos. DVDs could be digitized and gotten rid of. You can definitely fit more storage in the bathroom, and I agree with the person who mentioned mirrored doors for the wardrobe.

partdeux · 01/05/2018 20:50

It's actually not that bad. Reminds me a bit of the flat me and DH lived in (in the beginning when I moved in)

Not sure if it's been said but:

  • grouting (the bathroom floor) is really not that hard, if you're willing to have a go at it.
  • look on Facebook/ebay for cheap furniture maybe bit by bit you could replace the things you hate the most
  • definitely go on Pinterest and gather ideas
  • walls painted in a light colour that's not white would be nice
  • the two large posters (world map and golf) need to go!!!

Bathroom corner shelf makes it look cluttered because it's open - when i lived in the small flat I actually used Ikea baskets stacked as bathroom storage but something like this maybe-Woodluv Slimline MDF 4-Drawer Bathroom Storage Unit, 19 x 25 x 65.5 cm, White https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019QX218A/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_6tm6AbQ0KGA9K

Sevendown · 01/05/2018 20:52

I think it looks much nicer in the photos from what you described.

Get it ready to sell and move into a place for both of you with a separate living room and kitchen.
