To think it's impossible to make some homes nice?

I've recently begun trying to make my home a bit nicer- I live in a tiny one bedroom flat with a balcony with my DH, and try as I might to make it actually a nice place to be, it's beginning to feel like an exercise in futility.

Let's start with the bathroom. It has no windows, and a tiled floor- the builders did a crappy job of grouting the tiles, it comes out in huge chunks so there are loads of gaps, and there is some on the tiles which I just haven't been able to shift which means parts of the floor just always look dirty. The tiles are grey with a sort of grainy texture to them. It's a tiny room with no storage at all, I bought this little floor tidy to put things in as it was about the only thing that would fit, but the room still manages to look cluttered. One of the light fittings has never worked either.

We have a combined kitchen/sitting room with wooden floors which were poorly fitted so in winter/when its cold you can't move an inch without them creaking like crazy. The washing machine makes so much noise at times it's pointless trying to watch TV or pay attention to anything else.

We have floor-to-ceiling windows with no windowsills and cheap vertical blinds like these. Same in the bedroom. All the windows are south facing and the blinds are practically transparent so on sunny days it gets absurdly hot.

The furniture - DH bought the place before we got together and furnished it like a typical cash-strapped bachelor with chunky black Ikea furniture as far as the eye can see, and the world's ugliest beige sofa. The black furniture shows up every speck of dust and fingerprint, so sometimes it feels like painting the Forth bridge trying to keep it looking nice! We do have a lovely bureau which I inherited when my GPs died but next to all the black Ikea stuff it just looks odd and out of place.

The bedroom - also tiny, we have a (chunky black Ikea) kingsize bed, a massive wardrobe (same again), chest of drawers in front of the window and a small bedside unit.

Hallway - essentially just an empty space, occasionally occupied by the clothes horse. Not enough room for any furniture.

The balcony - also pretty small with a glass wall, impossible to hang anything from (unless I use cable ties) because of the flat, roughly 2-inch wide rail along the inside. We don't tend to spend a great deal of time out there anyway because of the kids who play outside and scream their heads off until about 10 p.m. and our downstairs neighbours whose cigarette and weed smoke comes straight up at us.

I just don't know how to make it into a nice home. I keep it clean and tidy, have tried not to clutter it up with too much 'decorative' stuff but it's just never a particularly warm or inviting place to be. I can't afford to start replacing furniture, I did buy a throw for the sofa but because the sofa cushions don't even fucking fit it just looked messy.

Does anyone else feel like this about their home? Can anyone make any suggestions from how I might transform mine? It's getting thoroughly depressing at this point.

The ikea furniture is awful. I know, i had it. Its not greag quality furniture but when argos had an offer on i managed to get a bookshelf, tv unit and sideboard for £130 in oak effect which looked a million times better.

The bedroom furniture would bother me less.

The bathroom is fairly spacious. I would look at a mirrored cabinet to replace the mirror for some storage and also and under sink caddy for additional storage. Would tidy it up a lot. Im sure you could paint over the grout with one of those grout pens?

Agree with PP’s that the flat is not bad at all. Wooden floors, big windows, lots of natural light, even a balcony and a view out onto trees.
These are massive bonuses that most flats simply don’t have.

I really think it just needs a few (inexpensive) tweaks and it will look loads better. Use what is already there as the building blocks for now and try to find a style that you both like.

How about starting a Pinterest board where you collect photos of black and white interiors you like? I just did a google search for ‘cosy black and white living room’ and loads of good ideas came up. You can start to bring stuff in bit by bit, or sometime when your DP is in a receptive mood, you can show him the board to explain what sort of look YOU like that could work well with his stuff and then start to make choices about it together. Not criticising his choices, just adding your own taste in on an equal footing.

I personally wouldn’t go for adding matchy matchy accent colours into the current black and white scheme, which would look a bit too obvious, cheap and unimaginative in my opinion. I would instead look at including a bigger variety of shapes and textures to reduce the current blockiness of everything. Colour is fine, but you want something a bit more subtle to blend with what’s already there, not bright stuff that will clash with it and make it look even more 90’s!

For example look for contemporary zig zag or Moroccan rugs and textured cushions in neutral and toning colours. More pictures on the walls would make it much more homely. A gallery wall with a mix (of 10-20) photos that mean something to you as a couple alongside quirky, interesting artwork would look good. You can create the arty ones for very little money using postcards or greetings cards and cheap black and white frames.

And finally Plants plants plants! You have wonderful light and a balcony!! The living room is crying out for a bit of life. Tell him they’re needed as air quality improvers!

I would do Google/Pinterest searches for ‘cosy contemporary black and white living room’

This is the sort of thing I am thinking of:

OP, sorry no time to read through all the suggestions but a couple of things stood out to me...

Unbox those CDs/DVDs, put them in storage sleeves and ditch the boxes. It feels wrong and painful when you do it but it makes it MUCH easier to select something to watch and saves a tonne of space. You can then basically get rid of those tall black shelving units that are quite imposing.

For me, all clutter must go in something so even if that means getting a linen box to put sweaty clothes on or a basket to throw hair dryers and hair product in - the world looks between when everything has a place. Seeing one large object will always look tidier than several small ones, iyswim.

The flat is nice. It is small, cluttered and the furniture is like every bachelor's choice I have ever seen but the flat itself is modern, has a nice wooden floor and great light through that patio/balcony window.

PinkSkyAtNightAngelDelight · 02/05/2018 17:04

Right my brutal thoughts.

Your bathroom is cluttered. You have more products then me, my DH and my children put together. You have loads of wall space you aren’t using. Get a cabinet and use it. Get rid of the black towels and bath mat. Does everything have to be black? Buy light colours. Get some storage that doesn’t leave everything on show.

Do you really need two massive dvd/cd towers? I feel like I’m looking at a student’s living room or your DH’s and it never changed when you moved in. We used to have one of those towers but we never use it. Why? Because we now have Spotify and a google player and Apple TV. Who owns CDs now anyway?

Your DH’s taste in pictures is awful, I’m not sure what you can do about that. Apart from accidentally clean them and oh they’ve fallen on the floor and broken? Hmm.

The sofa is hideous. I owned that coffee table but in oak colour, it’s from ikea and cheap as chips to change. Your bureau doesn’t match anything, will it fit in the hall?

It just looks like you moved in to DH’s flat that he hasn’t changed since around 1995. He has to adapt to you living there and not cling on to his £12 coffee table. Why is all your stuff in cupboards?

All the black just makes everything look really dark. Especially that wardrobe. It’s a small flat, it’s needs to be light and not taken up by lots of dark furniture. You have wall space in the living room too, look at storage. Go on Pinterest for ideas then persuade DH we aren’t in the 1980s and neither is he a student and yes furniture is functional but it’s nice if it looks nice too.

PinkSkyAtNightAngelDelight · 02/05/2018 17:13

It genuinely looks like you’re his girlfriend who moved in last week, not his wife who’s lived there for five years. He still sees it as his flat doesn’t he? Rather than both your home.

Isetan · 02/05/2018 17:41

The problem isn’t the flat, it’s the lack of imagination, creativity and will of its owners. There’s tons you could do, re-grout the floor, paint the walls, de clutter, rent a storage space, put shelving up, put curtains up etc.

I think the brick wall that is your DH has sucked out all the joy of a making over a perfectly nice flat, have a word and tell him how your living space is making you feel.

I will be moving within a year and now is the perfect time to get rid of stuff and to make the move less stressful I will be renting a storage space to store stuff I need but don’t need immediate access to.

Come on OP, there’s tons you could do but you’re feeling deflated and need a Pinterest pick me up.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/05/2018 17:53

Things I would do...

  • get the bathroom lighting fixed and decent bright bulbs to ensure it is as bright as possible despite no window (maybe a new light fitting if it can't be fixed, they aren't expensive)
  • cabinet on the wall in the bathroom for bottles of stuff. I think rooms look more cluttered when there's stuff on the floor. I also like the idea of a bathroom sink cabinet too.
  • we put something like this Ikea shelf up high on our bathroom wall for towels and loo rolls. The door opened underneath it. We also had one next to it which had damp bath towels hanging on it to dry. Super useful although I did need a little folding step to reach Grin
  • we also rented a small storage locker for some things we wanted to keep but not have in our tiny shoebox house. Was useful for the Christmas tree etc. It would free up storage in the flat for things you need everyday and removing clutter.
  • keep an eye on gumtree, shpock and eBay for things like curtains, sofas, accessories. Your sofa might look more cosy with some cushions on it if you don't want to replace it.
PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/05/2018 17:55

We also used a fairly cheap DIY guy to put up the bathroom cabinet, towel rails, and some other odd jobs around our house. It wasn't hugely expensive and he did loads of little jobs in the hour or so he was with us, and much better (and quicker) than we would have done. Was definitely worth it if you're not feeling confident.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/05/2018 17:58

Definitely agree that if you're planning to move there's no time like the present to declutter and box up. You really don't want to move a load of stuff you neither want or need.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/05/2018 18:04

Oh, if the wardrobe is Ikea Pax, can you just get a new outer frame and then re-install all the insides into it. Maybe a pig of a job, but might be worth considering. We have done this with Ikea Stuva furniture when we changed the usage.

£200 would get you a king sized Ikea bed in a lighter matching colour. Doesn't seem too expensive. Alternatively switch back to a double size and buy a lovely one you can take with you, it'll definitely fit in your new home whereas a king sized one might not.

InteriorDespairer · 02/05/2018 18:13

Ok, shoved the dvd shelves in a cupboard and switched the golf canvas with the framed poster from above the sofa (which has faded really badly after 4 and half year of the sun shining on it). Can’t decide if it looks better or worse now.

Course the effect is somewhat spoilt by the two screw sockets from where DH had nailed the dvd shelves to the fucking wall

To think it's impossible to make some homes nice?

Gonna try putting the table where the bureau is and the bureau in the hall.

Luckily DH is out at a park run and won’t be home til half 8

InteriorDespairer · 02/05/2018 18:24

Bureau won’t work in the hall because of the mini radiator

Nice work on the DVD shelves, OP! Looking good.
I really agree that you should get rid of all DVDs and CDs. I know this feels painful as they cost a lot. But seriously, consider it, because life is so much lighter when you don’t have that sort of thing weighing you down. My husband taught me that and I’ve never looked back.
I’m actually a bit surprised at your DH, being so fussy about his furniture and wanting to hoard the DVDs. Bit old school isn’t it? Can you appeal to his “man who loves gadgets” side and get Netflix?!

GhostCurry · 02/05/2018 19:34

PS I’m sure that mini radiator is annoying on the furniture front, but it’s so cute! Hee hee!

I do think some basic floating shelves would help you. In the bathroom, the bedroom etc - placed high, so you don’t bump into them. Too much stuff resting on the floor at the moment.
Also - just get a rug. It’ll help so much. Biggest one that’ll fit/you can afford.

PinkSkyAtNightAngelDelight · 02/05/2018 19:57

Better already!

drinkingwinefeelingfine · 02/05/2018 20:05

If you pay half the mortgage you have as much right to decorate as him.

Go on Facebook and join the paint chalked group. You'll get so many ideas. And yes you can paint the fake IKEA wood. It actually looks really nice, I've done it before.

InteriorDespairer · 02/05/2018 20:08

Ah. Apparently I’ve posted too many photos today...
