To think it's impossible to make some homes nice?

I've recently begun trying to make my home a bit nicer- I live in a tiny one bedroom flat with a balcony with my DH, and try as I might to make it actually a nice place to be, it's beginning to feel like an exercise in futility.

Let's start with the bathroom. It has no windows, and a tiled floor- the builders did a crappy job of grouting the tiles, it comes out in huge chunks so there are loads of gaps, and there is some on the tiles which I just haven't been able to shift which means parts of the floor just always look dirty. The tiles are grey with a sort of grainy texture to them. It's a tiny room with no storage at all, I bought this little floor tidy to put things in as it was about the only thing that would fit, but the room still manages to look cluttered. One of the light fittings has never worked either.

We have a combined kitchen/sitting room with wooden floors which were poorly fitted so in winter/when its cold you can't move an inch without them creaking like crazy. The washing machine makes so much noise at times it's pointless trying to watch TV or pay attention to anything else.

We have floor-to-ceiling windows with no windowsills and cheap vertical blinds like these. Same in the bedroom. All the windows are south facing and the blinds are practically transparent so on sunny days it gets absurdly hot.

The furniture - DH bought the place before we got together and furnished it like a typical cash-strapped bachelor with chunky black Ikea furniture as far as the eye can see, and the world's ugliest beige sofa. The black furniture shows up every speck of dust and fingerprint, so sometimes it feels like painting the Forth bridge trying to keep it looking nice! We do have a lovely bureau which I inherited when my GPs died but next to all the black Ikea stuff it just looks odd and out of place.

The bedroom - also tiny, we have a (chunky black Ikea) kingsize bed, a massive wardrobe (same again), chest of drawers in front of the window and a small bedside unit.

Hallway - essentially just an empty space, occasionally occupied by the clothes horse. Not enough room for any furniture.

The balcony - also pretty small with a glass wall, impossible to hang anything from (unless I use cable ties) because of the flat, roughly 2-inch wide rail along the inside. We don't tend to spend a great deal of time out there anyway because of the kids who play outside and scream their heads off until about 10 p.m. and our downstairs neighbours whose cigarette and weed smoke comes straight up at us.

I just don't know how to make it into a nice home. I keep it clean and tidy, have tried not to clutter it up with too much 'decorative' stuff but it's just never a particularly warm or inviting place to be. I can't afford to start replacing furniture, I did buy a throw for the sofa but because the sofa cushions don't even fucking fit it just looked messy.

Does anyone else feel like this about their home? Can anyone make any suggestions from how I might transform mine? It's getting thoroughly depressing at this point.

Just a quick thought about your tiles - do you rent? If so, I'd point out to your LL that the poor grouting will trap mould behind the tiles, which is highly likely in a room with no window for ventilation. It happened in our bathroom, and we ended up needing to rip all the tiles off and the wall was completely buggered.

InteriorDespairer · 02/05/2018 11:14

We don't unfortunately have the funds at the moment for me to replace the furniture but I have decided that I will make a few executive decisions regarding artwork and soft furnishings that will definitely involve chucking the current crap on a sacrificial fire and dancing around the flames

My philosophy will be that it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!

We have a shared ownership mortgage. Think I'm going to take a PPs advice and re-grout myself and paint the tiles. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner TBH.

@FizzyGreenWater I would not be able to live with the golf course picture (??!! why?! What relevance does it have ot anything?!)

Well maybe it's where he had an amazing holiday once or a favourite course or something. Bil is a big golfer and has loads of golf related pics as they are happy memories for him.

In the bathroom get an undersink storage unit like these. Chuck all your toiletries in it.

Radiator cover in your hallway and put a nice mirror above. You could use the top of the cover as a shelf and have nice picture frames and candles etc.

Get rid of the blinds and all the "artwork".

Nice new bedding and towels (you could use your jl vouchers)

Freshen up the paintwork.

Do you watch your dvds? If not sell them, if you do then put them in a dvd folder. I wouldnt have them out as it makes it lool cluttered.

It isn’t bad at all!!!

Sell the sofa and buy a slightly smaller one. Accessories with nice cushions and a throw.

Do actually use the kitchen table? It looks quite strange to have two chairs facing the wall. I’m guessing you don’t actually use it? Push it out, cover with a nice oilcloth, place chairs at either end.

The ‘art’ will have to go. Sell it and replace with bright abstract art or large blown up photographs of people laughing and being happy.
A rug for the floor.. A couple of large (real) plants.

Ikea is your friend!

There is a website called Make a house a home which is filled with lovely ideas.

Whitesea · 02/05/2018 11:41

Oh and buy some storage unit for the bathroom and maybe get rid of the navy.

Jaynesworld · 02/05/2018 11:52

Also in the bathroom, paint the walls navy, it would tie everything in

I personally wouldnt regrout. I would get some vinyl and put over the top of the tiles.

The dark furniture isnt so bad (not my taste but not horiffic)
I would add some gold touches to the room through a few ornaments/candles. Not too much though.

Bluelady · 02/05/2018 11:56

You say you can't afford a new sofa but you really can - DFS always have sales on and they offer 0% credit, you won't notice a few quid a month but you'll definitely notice what it buys!

Jaynesworld · 02/05/2018 12:00

I think the major problem (other than your dh) is that instead of working with what you have and the current "style" youve tried injecting your style into it making it too missmatched iyswim?

For example, the living room is quite modern. But youve put in teapots and a bureau. Have you thought about updating the bureau so it fits in more?

Dixiechickonhols · 02/05/2018 12:06

The basics are nice, like the wood floors and doors. It just needs styling. Have a look at show flats in nearby new build developments or online for ideas. Bathroom floor you can get lovely modern vinyl, maybe in a Moroccan tile design. Big mirror cabinet on wall and no clutter out just a plant, nice towels. Stuff on top of cupboards and wardrobes looks cluttered. Baycrazy lets you search for furniture on eBay within 5 or 10 miles or local Facebook selling sites. Quality furniture goes for very little.

Jaynesworld · 02/05/2018 12:12

Some inspo for you

I would love to see the houses of those people who are saying the flat is messy. It is pretty organised. The decluttering comments are barking. This is waaaaay better than dead zones of grey with turquoise “accents” and no personal items at all to give any indication of the occupants’ lives.

RoseWhiteTips · 02/05/2018 12:37

The bureau is lovely. You can actually have a juxtaposition of new and the charmingly vintage.Hmm

Bluelady · 02/05/2018 12:39

The bureau is the best thing in the flat. Whatever you do, keep that.

BrendasUmbrella · 02/05/2018 12:43

The flat really isn't too bad at all. The sofa is grim, the picture above the bed looks very "Ask me about my gap year", and the bathroom floor is a bit grotty, but if your DH is willing to grow up and leave his halls of residence years behind him, you could make it a nice adult space.

(Or if he's still clinging to the idea that it's "his", make sure you put your stamp on the new place. And ideally get a two bed so he can have his "charming" possessions hidden away from general view!)

RoseWhiteTips · 02/05/2018 12:43

Absolutely. And for heaven’s sake do not tart it up.

RoseWhiteTips · 02/05/2018 12:43

The bureau, I mean.

GummyGoddess · 02/05/2018 12:47

Ask JL how long until expiry, you don't know when they were purchased, just when you received them. If they were bought 6 months before your wedding you don't have that long.

Jaynesworld · 02/05/2018 13:00

@bluelady i agree, that bureau is gorgeous.

And @rosewhitetips. Yes you can have both vintage and modern in one cohesive style. But you really need an eye for design to pull it off.

Jaynesworld · 02/05/2018 13:01

With regards to the bureau i meant to stain it/oil it to update it, not paint it.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 02/05/2018 13:17

"Ask me about my gap year" GrinGrin

OP our DFS sofa was 0% credit and we paid I think £19 a month for 3 years. It was definitely worth it.

Have you thought about keeping an eye on eBay for second hand bed frames you might like? It's the first place I look for furniture now, you can honestly get some lovely things. We just sold our beautiful JL white metal framed bed on there - nothing wrong with it, but needed a bigger size due to kids bunking with us. You can either search for collection only within a certain radius of your area, or lots of sellers will courier.
