How long has this been a thing? An advert for a local Daddy daughter date night has just popped up on my Facebook. Seems a bit bizarre.

But I don’t see what’s wrong with that either theanti my grandfather used to take me for a meal (when he had won on the horses) and would spoil me rotten. Which if I was that age know - with social media I’d have probably took a load of pictures titles DGF and DGD date . He treated me like a queen (which he always did any way) but it’s nice to have specific fond memories. There really was no sexual undertone and I think it’s really sad that some people imply that there is.

MissKummerspeck · 01/05/2018 14:25

Very weird makes me cringe

TheAntiBoop · 01/05/2018 14:26

Have you read the links about what these dates involve and the links with chastity etc?

It's the controlling a daughter that disturbs me - not what it's called

Dancingleopard · 01/05/2018 14:29

Looking for links but can’t see them..

The links speak of controlling a daughter ?

ILikeMyChickenFried · 01/05/2018 14:32

There's two issues here. The (IMO) tacky Americanism that is using date for everything and how it's a bit icky to use a term for what was a meeting between adult, sexual partners for a meeting between anyone.

The second one I didn't know about when posting this. I've done some googling since and it seems the root of these "events" is really quite sinister.

ilike

So do you don’t like the term
Puppy date
Play date?

ILikeMyChickenFried · 01/05/2018 14:36

No, I wouldn't use those phrases. I find them a bit tacky.

Trinity66 · 01/05/2018 14:37

Never even heard of "puppy date" is that a thing?

KERALA1 · 01/05/2018 14:38

The term "dating" and "date" is too firmly fixed in my mind with the traditional "boy takes girl out at start of relationship" meaning suppose have watched too many American films growing up as we all have so thats ingrained.

Gingerninj · 01/05/2018 14:38

It's just the way it's worded really, I highly doubt any man spend time with his daughter sees it as a date (at least I really hope not). I don't see why it should be seen as such a big thing and have a name for it. Surly you should spend time and bond with your kids on a daily basis? But anyway people use the term " play date" without thinking twice about it, think people are over thinking this

Dancingleopard · 01/05/2018 14:39

Well there you go. If you find the term puppy date or play date your always gonna have a problem with and kind of date.

Just scroll past it in future

ILikeMyChickenFried · 01/05/2018 14:42

Yes I did find it odd which is why I started this post to see if it was commonplace or just an random oddity I had come across.

Was it wrong of me to ask?

Date is a more generic word in the USA as has been mentioned already. There is also more of a tradition of father/daughter dances as has also been mentioned.
We have one to one time with our DC, we take it in turns. This is focused one to one activity for a day. They have their own name and are planned occasions. The DC look forward to these, they happen roughly once a quarter. They are very different in feel to family time or casual together time.
I don't see the problem with being intentional in your relationships sometimes.

SenecaFalls · 01/05/2018 14:48

This. And it has been used in this general sense a long time before all that purity nonsense started (which is, by the way, not mainstream at all in the US.)

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 01/05/2018 15:16

What is a puppy date? Does the owner take out the puppy on a date? Surely just taking it for a walk would suffice?

Or is it taking your puppy to play with other puppies? i.e. taking them up the park?

Why does everything have to be so Americanised?

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 01/05/2018 15:18

Why a dad spending time with their daughter has to have a label put on it is beyond me. Surely it's just parenting?

I've never heard of a daddy and son date.

BarbarianMum · 01/05/2018 15:19

Oh well, heaven protect us from tacky Americanisms ! 🇬🇧

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 01/05/2018 15:22

Oh well, heaven protect us from tacky Americanisms

I didn't mention 'tacky'. No need to be so defensive.

But daddy daughter dates is an American concept that has worked it's way over to the UK by people who use the words 'hun, bubs, little man' etc.

BarbarianMum · 01/05/2018 15:25

You might not have Danny but the OP did. Scratch a Brit and the old colonial attitudes comes shining through.

starsandstuff · 01/05/2018 15:43

It has its roots in conservative Christian culture, the idea that a father must show his daughter how a man ought to treat her, so when she stops guarding her 'purity' and marries, she chooses a husband who will slot into those fixed gender roles with her (paying for everything, getting her coat, pulling a chair out for her and so forth).

I was just sick on myself to whom do I send my laundry bill?

SenecaFalls · 01/05/2018 15:54

The notion of fathers spending time with their daughters in organized activities in the US does not have its roots in conservative Christian culture. And that purity business is certainly not part of mainstream conservative Christian culture in the US. It is associated with some elements of fundamentalist Christianity.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the United States that percolate from time to time on MN. Usually anything that might concern religion is at the top of the list.

DuchyDuke · 01/05/2018 15:58

There are mommy son dates too. In fact in East Asia sons go all out on these dates - flowers, expensive meals, gifts. I think it’s nice

Dancingleopard · 01/05/2018 16:40

As long as the origin of daddy/mummy date didn’t come from the satanic bible I’m not fussed.

Puppy date is where you meet up with like minded puppy owners and you socialise your little fur baby ... Grin

Is there a similar theme there of teaching the child how to treat a future partner, like the son dating his mother? Or is that part absent?

ILikeMyChickenFried · 01/05/2018 16:42

I don't see what's wrong with someone in England preferring British English to American English.
