Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 19:44

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

What if shop call police about the above behaviour?harassment, intimidation

I have a feeling that this guy would be very reluctant to call the police

I agree. Go back, be polite but firm and tell him you will not leave until the mistake has been rectified.

Morphene · 13/04/2018 13:03

Definitely ask to speak to the manager.

A local shop can't afford people publicising the fact they rip people off.

daisychain01 · 13/04/2018 13:13

Take a photo of the goods, for the record, including price label if any and barcodes.

Go back into the shop ASAP, and take a photo of the shelves where the wine and the chocolates are displayed. If they don't display the pricing on any of their shelves and don't willingly offer you a receipt and are uncooperative in giving you information, this is evidence for the Small claims Court.

Write the circumstances and the above information in a letter (signed for next day delivery) to the shop, with the promise you will take them to the small claims court and they will risk their local reputation. That should focus their attention.

What he can do, is issue a refund on his own card.

Moonandstars84 · 13/04/2018 13:44

Hope you get it sorted op.

Doodlesplodge17 · 13/04/2018 17:37

Any update OP?

Ladybirdflyawayhome76 · 13/04/2018 17:40

Did your husband go round? Hope you’ve got it sorted

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/04/2018 17:44

Haven't RTFT, but I'd go back and buy the same things and see if he does it again.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 13/04/2018 17:48

I'd report it to your bank - see what they say. I'd express a concern that he's overcharged you & you're now worried he may also have cloned your card etc...

lindaf100 · 13/04/2018 18:10

WHATEVER YOU DO DONT LISTEN TO CREAM BUN. RIDICULOUS ADVICE! The numbers on your receipt must be Bar codes or Stock Codes. Go back, stand your ground and if needs be take someone with you.

Yorkshiretolondon · 13/04/2018 18:19

CF id go back and demand to see owner/ manager... of no joy I’d hang around the shop telling customers not to shop there as they’ll be scammed!

libbyb · 13/04/2018 18:22

I have read all this with interest, and I would be furious that I had 'been cheated'. Unfortunately my response to this rip off culture is to avoid the independent 'corner shops' like the plague. I am offended that all the smaller shops ask you if you would "Like your receipt" - it's a transaction after all and the receipts usually have "please retain for your records" written on them. Usually these independents tend to employ only family - after one too many 'errors' I decided to put my faith in the local Tesco's, Sainsbury's and Asda small shops.

I think the suggestion about getting the three identical items and purchasing again is the best advice I've read on here!!

My friend has a mum with the early stages of dementia, who is also a drinker. She lives alone.

My friend was looking at her mum's bank statements and saw huge amounts coming out labelled the local corner shop. She asked her mum what she bought from there, and she listed her normal drink that came to a fraction of the charges. She followed her mum to the shop and watched it all happen (the staff not knowing she was related) and as usual they rung up her drink, but the charge for her card was far, far higher. They had realised she was a vulnerable old lady who didn't ever check the payments and had made a mint out of her.

It ended in a police investigation and she wasn't the only one they were doing this to.

mspeef · 13/04/2018 18:29

You paid £1 for a Twix?! (Misses point!)

DropItLikeASquat · 13/04/2018 18:29

this is disgusting. I really hope you are able to get your money back OP.
I would like to say it surprises me but sadly it doesn't.

meechesmum · 13/04/2018 18:38

Don’t eat the sweets or drink the wine. Go back and tell the service desk you want to see someone higher up the chain. He was obviously up to something. Is f he has a scam going he will be raking it in. They need to know.

Notasunnybunny · 13/04/2018 18:43

I was a retailer and we sometimes had to deal with charge back claims although these were always phone transactions never a customer who had been into the shop and used chip and pin. We didn’t have contactless because of the fraud risk. When we had these claims the onus was on us to provide the evidence and disprove the claim not the other way around. This was often a massive faff and sometimes I just let it go. Deffinately worth approaching your card issuer. But I would also take your bolshyest friends back to the shop and stand your ground whilst loudly talking about theft. If this doesn’t work take to your local social media, next door, local town Facebook group etc. If they aren’t willing to put it right then it was obviously intentional.

wanderings · 13/04/2018 19:07

£20 is a lot of money to be fleeced in this way; the fact that he didn't want to give a receipt says it all. I certainly would not let this go. If it comes to it, he might listen to a threat of the small claims court; shops like that need their reputation to survive. I admire the poster who camped on a chair until something was done. (I remember my mum kicking up a huge stink in my local newsagents when I was about nine; they had deliberately overcharged 25p for splitting a pack of batteries. I found my mum's rage so embarrassing at the time I didn't dare go there again for a long time!)

In local shops I often pay cash to spare them the bank charges; but maybe I'm doing myself a favour as well.

Frogletmamma · 13/04/2018 19:08

LibbyB not all corner shops are bad. Our nearest is often cheaper than the supermarkets and didn't even put sugary drink prices up this week. The owner works crazy hours but is always friendly, knows everyones name etc

Jayfee · 13/04/2018 19:12

Any progress op?

GabsAlot · 13/04/2018 19:18

cash iksnt so great either

i once bought a card in clintons-gave a ten pound note card was 2 pound

she only gave me 3 pounds change i said excuse me i gave you a 10-no you didnt she said

called manager over she swore i didnt give a ten they believed her-they did take my details though whilst this woman glared at me for daring to say she was

got the phone call later to say i was correct so it all ended well but it does happen with cash aswell
no apology from said woman though

twer · 13/04/2018 19:24

Did you go back OP?

Beeziekn33ze · 13/04/2018 19:28

Gabs - I had a couple of incidents when I thought I'd given a larger note than I got change for. Then I had one where I knew I'd only had one note in my purse, I was loud and confident (for once!) and they backed down.

Nowadays I wave the note and say loudly 'Sorry I've only got a twenty!' so everyone else in the shop can hear. I get the right change!

maygirl27 · 13/04/2018 19:56

I know it's your local, but I wouldn't care how local it was, if a shop assistant did this to me I would never set foot in the store again. Also, had to query some questionable amounts on occasions.

PeonyTruffle · 13/04/2018 20:02

Well this is all kinds of cheeky fuckery from the shop isn’t it. Hope you got it sorted OP
