Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 19:44

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

I think the owner needs to know that this guy is making mistakes, over charging and upsetting regular customers. If the owner backs him up, then ring trading standards and see if they have any advice.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 12/04/2018 21:42

You left the queue and then checked. So you hadn't even left the shop at this point?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/04/2018 21:44

how rotten,he’s a chancer.it is a normal, routine task so no you’d not be scrutinising transaction
Contact your bank, dispute the transaction, explain what happened
Take photo of receipt on iPhone for reference case it fades, get lost etc

I don’t particularly think it’s a police issue
If it’s a retail chain eg Londis, spar etc write to HQ that you were overcharged
Send a scan of receipt

NSEA · 12/04/2018 21:46

Tell your bank it was an unknown charge.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 21:47

tell your bank it was an unknown charge

Yeah. That's not going to work.

Lou222 · 12/04/2018 21:47

I can’t believe you left the shop.

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2018 21:50

My local co-op regularly charged the wrong amount for things....the amount of their system wasn't the same as on the shelf I threw a fit in front of a long queue of customers said I'd go ahead with the purchase this time, but I was fed up of it. It's never happened again.

But this sounds different if it was entered manually.

Do they normally get you to sign for cash back? Because this isn't signed, is it!

Go back, say you're not going to let it drop. You want £22 now in cash. I'm pretty sure he'll be able to manage that.

This is one treason I always ask for a receipt: I think it discusses dishonest cashiers.

roundaboutround · 12/04/2018 21:54

No way would I forget about it! I hate it when I get overcharged. Go back in with someone else and explain what's happened.

MorningsEleven · 12/04/2018 22:13

Oakmaiden

I think your post was very sensible and reasonable but it appears the pitchforks are primed on this thread.

Crowd · 12/04/2018 22:13

Logged with 101 yet , OP? 😂

Jayfee · 12/04/2018 22:23

Could you go back and ask for the person to show you what item is 22 pounds. With a witness and record the conversation. Come back and let us know how you get on whatever you decide to do.

SweetEnough · 12/04/2018 22:38

Sounds like a con tbh, I have no advice but I was once over charged in my local cornershop, I didn't notice until I checked my bank and was down nearly £70! He'd accidentally put in £70 instead of £7 and I didn't check!

I didn't have a receipt, took my bank statement in instead, but he's a good man and said when he'd cashed up he'd realised he'd made a mistake somewhere and gave me it back there and then.

Now I check every single time before paying.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/04/2018 22:47

Jayfee can you see that going & recording a conversation is provocative
The cashier would need to agree to being recorded, it can’t be done secretly and then produced tah dah style

Timefortea99 · 12/04/2018 23:02

You have been scammed. No way is that a mistake. I can understand 70.00 being keyed in for 7 quid, as detailed above, but the amounts here are random. And they are all in on it. We used to have a Whistlestop shop at our station. If you gave one guy the exact amount in cash he wouldn’t;ring it in the till. I knew he was palming it. The shop got taken over by a major retailer, and he continued working there for a bit but I wondered how long he would last. Not long, he went soon after. They obviously had a more robust stock/income system.

There is a corner shop where I work. Till drawer is permanently open, he never rings things up. I am sure they need to ring things in for VAT recording. I rarely go in because I think he is defrauding tax etc.

sahknowme · 12/04/2018 23:06

Contact your bank to get the refund, and verbally speak to the shop owner when they get back from holiday.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 23:10

Why would the bank refund it?

louharrisismyhero · 12/04/2018 23:24

To the posters saying let it go... Why on earth would you? They'd obviously made a mistake which can be checked at till tally, or it's a fiddle and they'll do it to someone else more vulnerable who maybe can't stand up for themselves!

dadshere · 12/04/2018 23:27

If it is a credit card, you can call them and have the charge removed.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/04/2018 23:31

Bank will want to know of a potentially fraudulent transaction and bank can block it

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 23:33

Bank will want to know of a potentially fraudulent transaction and bank can block it

By that token we could all call the bank and say the same after buying something. The OP paid with her card. Didn't check the amount.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/04/2018 23:42

They like have departments and staff who deal with such transactions
Less of the little Britain I said, innit, yea
Bank will look into it,on both sides.not just she said

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 23:43

I have no idea what half of your post means. However, the OP verified the amount. She has no proof it was an overcharge. She will struggle to get the bank to sort this.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/04/2018 23:46

No you're wrong
You raise it as disputed transaction, bank send you a form to complete
They look into it
There processes to address disputed transactions. It doesn’t simply come down to I said.

Loonoon · 12/04/2018 23:46

I had something similar recently - a small independent store that apparently couldn't refund me because they didn't have the cash/the authority/the right person wasn't there. I was so angry I lost it (in my very PA middle class Brit way). I said 'that's fine, I'll wait' - sat down on the chair normally used by staff, pulled out my Kindle and started pretending to read. In reality I was so angry I couldn't follow the words and I was shaking too much to drink my Costa. It didn't much matter as 2 minutes into my vigil he suddenly found the cash and I was able to leave.

Ever since then I have used the Tesco Metro down the road - little shops that con like this are their own worst enemies.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 23:50

It doesn’t simply come down to I said.

What do you mean 'I said'

I don't get that? The OP has verified the transaction amount. She has no proof that it was the incorrect amount.
