Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 19:44

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

Barbara Yes they always ask if I want cashback! Ahhh shit, I'm an idiot. Why didn't I check the bloody screen?!

I normally do, I was just preoccupied with other things and due to it being my "local" just didn't think.

DH is home soon, when I tell him he'll insist on going back to the shop for me, but I'm not sure if that's the best thing to do. I'll call trading standards in the morning.

@Doraaaa
Don't give up! Can't believe PPs are suggesting that!
You (or your husband) should go back to the shop, if they refuse to refund you (again), then call trading standards as they might take a while...

snewsname · 12/04/2018 21:01

But then £22 is an odd amount for cash back.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 12/04/2018 21:01

We had a similar neighbourhood shop... At least two of the staff were fiddling... Their favourites were overcharging, not ringing it through till, palming change.... (can I have all my change? From 20£ note for 4£ worth of groceries... And suddenly another 10£ is released from the downturned palm...i watching this scum do the same to a blind woman... The first time they did it to me, I wasn't paying attention and thought it a genuine error... It wasn't...

When challenged they always said... Oh I've made a human error... Strangely it was ALWAYS in their favour....
Utter scum

lalalalyra · 12/04/2018 21:03

But what I don't understand is if this guy was an employee, how was he actually going to get the money as the cash till won't balance if he takes out the extra charge in cash. As far as the shop is concerned it's all in order, unless management is on it.

If code99 is cashback then that would be easy enough to make it balance up between the two.

Willow2017 · 12/04/2018 21:04

Go back with your dh. The guy wont be so cocky with him there you can bet the farm on that.
Get him told you want a refund out the till. Its up to them to sort out the discrepancy. We do it at my work if we have put through the wrong amount, we just deduct the overcharge from other sales.
Dont let them get away with it. Misteaks can happen but you don't just tell the customer "tough i am keeping your £20" !!

lalalalyra · 12/04/2018 21:05

But then £22 is an odd amount for cash back.

With my cynical head on that would then "help" the shop guy remember the odd woman who asked for a random amount of cashback...

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 12/04/2018 21:07

Definitely call your bank and explain. They can sometimes help.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/04/2018 21:07

In theory shops could give any amount in cashback out that they want.

They probably only do multiples of £5 or £10 normally because they struggle to keep enough change for their own needs.

PattiStanger · 12/04/2018 21:08

He's not going to get away with overcharging a customer who is paying cash as they'll realise straight away if he says it's £20 more than they are expecting so he must be relying on customers not looking when they input their PIN so a very unsophisticated scam that doesn't benefit him unless the he's on commission from the owner for how much he can overcharge.

When he says he can't do a refund he's probably meaning he's not allowed to not that he doesn't have the capability to, he's hoping you'll just write it off.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/04/2018 21:09

If the shop has a very simple till that cant scan bar codes it very unlikely it has the ability to offer cash back.

PattiStanger · 12/04/2018 21:10

Do small shops do cashback? Don't you have to have a special till system to do that? I've only come across it in supermarkets

wormery · 12/04/2018 21:11

I would let my dh go back with me, take the receipt and items if you've still got them, ask him to explain wine overcharge and what 22 is for, the items must all have price tags. Good luck, keep us posted.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 21:11

Anyone with a card machine can do cash back. You are just charging for money rather than goods. Nothing special needed.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 12/04/2018 21:13

The brass neck of some people. He’s just robbed you and he doesn’t give a shit. You need to call the police, not sure if they would care but it’s worth a go.

BrendasUmbrella · 12/04/2018 21:15

What do you think the police will do?

Say he's done this to ten other people. And each of them decided the police won't be able to do anything, so they don't report. If they all reported it, the police would act, because he's either swindling people or inept, either way it needs investigating.

lalalalyra · 12/04/2018 21:18

Our corner shop does it and they have a till that they only enter the total on. They just take a copy of the recipt and mark the cashback.

The guy that owns it says that people would rather spend a couple of quid on something they don't really need than pay £1.95 to use the cash machine at the garage and he's made a bit more money since he started doing it.

If you have a local Facebook page threaten to post there to warn other customers

sweeneytoddsrazor · 12/04/2018 21:23

Obviously he can do a refund, but the amount you are paying is clearly displayed on the card reader so you should check before entering pin or swiping card. Most small shops display signs saying mistakes can only be rectified before you leave so he could be covered by that.

Beeziekn33ze · 12/04/2018 21:26

Don't let it go! It's your corner shop so presumably the usual guy/owner knows you as a customer. Take someone with you and be calm, polite, but insistent however long it takes, Have you got a photo of the items you bought?

SirGawain · 12/04/2018 21:27

Patti I actually had my card in my hand when I walked in to the shop. That's a good point. I won't do that in future.
That shop wouldn't have a future from my custom. Clearly it was their intention to defraud customers.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 12/04/2018 21:35

I’m not sure why people are suggesting Trading Standards. Surely this is theft or fraud. I would take it up with the shop owner. If you are a regular customer and live locally you have more clout than you think.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 21:38

That's why people are suggesting trading standards Confused
