Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

Sounds a bit dodgy - he would know that you'd just bought a few bits - but something for £22 (I'm not sure what you could buy in a corner store for that much).

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 20:13

Hmm yes the only thing might've been the wine, but he'd already overcharged me by a pound for that anyway (I presume, going from the receipt)

Aghhh wish I'd stayed and challenged it now.

Whoever has programmed that price into the till has fucked up. In corner shops barcodes and prices change all the time and the owner/manager has to update the system accordingly. If I'd been serving you I'd have noticed and put it through at the correct price as a miscellaneous item then made a note that the till needed a tweek. There's been a lack of training here.

Try not to be too harsh, working in a corner shop can be pretty shit.

Ifonlyus · 12/04/2018 20:16

Don't let it go. If they had made an honest mistake they would have rectified it. They could be doing this to many customers.

CastielIsMyAngel · 12/04/2018 20:17

Let it go No way i would let it go! It's theft if done on purpose and he could be doing it to lots of people and some people just can't afford it, it could really mess things up for them financially. I'd keep the receipt, take a photo of what you bought and see the owner when he's back in

FluffyWuffy100 · 12/04/2018 20:17

Should have dealt with it at the time. Too late now. You’ll have to let it go.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 12/04/2018 20:19

I'm not sure what you could buy in a corner store for that much Spirits maybe?

Either he is on the fiddle or he typed in the wrong items code and doesn't know how to fix it, I would go in and talk to another staff member if there is one.

ErrmWTAF · 12/04/2018 20:20

The "barcode" of 999 is probably in the computer as "Misc", whereas the other two numbers are assigned to specific items/types of items. I think this guy knew exactly what he was doing.

I agree with others that you need to get the police in tonight, before the CCTV mysteriously disappears. Ring 101 now. This is theft.

Even if the police don't do much about it tonight, your complaint is on record and that will help your paper trail when you contact Trading Standards tomorrow (you will, right?) and the shop owner when he gets back. I'm sure he's going to see a lot of till receipts with the the 999 barcode on it...

BettyBaggins · 12/04/2018 20:20

Take a pic of items and receipt. Wait til normal man back, take items back with receipt. If they fob you off tell them your boyf, dad, mum whoever work for local newspaper and would be interested. Works well with dodgy tradesmen too Wink

Creambun2 · 12/04/2018 20:21

"Ring 101" ffs.

UpstartCrow · 12/04/2018 20:21

Contact Trading Standards. There's no way I'd let that go.

userofthiswebsite · 12/04/2018 20:21

Could you send someone else to buy a Twix in so they'd have the same itemised number on the receipt and therefore TS, or whichever body, can see different customers are being charged different amounts for the item.

greathat · 12/04/2018 20:22

Don't let it go! Go back tomorrow. If no joy I would be making sure that the information is shared on every piece of local social media you've got

PodgeBod · 12/04/2018 20:22

Why on Earth would you let it go if you were overcharged £20? I can be a bit of a pushover but that's a bit extreme! It's not pocket change.

Emma198 · 12/04/2018 20:23

You can't dispute amount with bank when you entered your pin to confirm. Lesson learned to check before you type in your pin in future, your best hope probably lies with the fella who's normally there who would recognise you and know he'll lose your business if he doesn't refund.

KTheGrey · 12/04/2018 20:24

Report it to the police. They stole your money. It may be something that that particular guy is doing, so the management would want to know.

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 12/04/2018 20:26

OP, can you go back and tell him that as he said he couldn't give refunds then he accepts the charge is incorrect. But as he can't give you the money then you will accept £14 worth of goods instead, to make up the difference between what their prices say and the money charged. Don't be fobbed off by any tales of incorrect price tags on goods, they have to sell at the price advertised, even if they made an error and undercharge.

wormery · 12/04/2018 20:26

Get someone to go and buy the two chocolates you bought and see what their receipt says and how much they were charged. They could also look at the stickers that might be on the shelf to see if they are coded.

NewYearNewMe18 · 12/04/2018 20:26

What do you think the police will do ?

I'll keep asking until someone gives me a sensible answer

GoodMorning1 · 12/04/2018 20:28

Def. call Trading Standards.

Emma198 · 12/04/2018 20:29

@NewYear crap all...

jazzbarfunk · 12/04/2018 20:29

If they refuse to give you a refund and say it isn't possible then inform them that you will be making your shopping basket up to that value of the purchase. If they owe you £20 worth of goods and will not give you the money then fill a basket to the missing value.

Emma198 · 12/04/2018 20:29

Don't do anything until you've spoken to normal fella at least give him a chance to sort.

Teenagerwoes · 12/04/2018 20:30

The other day my teenage son bought chewing gum from a local garage for 97p, used his card, didn’t check and they took £20.97.

The assistant clearly knew what he was doing, I never realised this was a thing but seems he’s not the only one at it.

Son called his bank and they said as he had used chip and pin and not contactless they could not refund him (not sure why) and he would need to raise it with the shop himself, which he doesn’t feel able to do. (I am going to though).

I will always be checking amounts from now on!

PattiStanger · 12/04/2018 20:31

Don't let it go, you've been ripped off,

I'd also be interested in seeing a picture of the receipt (scribble out the name and card details) to see what it actually shows.

Sorry if you've answered this, I can't scroll back on the app, at what point did he know you were going to pay be card?
