Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 19:44

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

Nothing in the shop is coded, I presume they have to enter prices by memory? Then manually enter it in to the till? If this is the case they could just type any amount and it's up to the customer to check the amount on screen. Which I certainly will be doing from now on.

To the pp who mentioned working in a shop (sorry can't scroll back, I'm on my phone) I do understand. I've worked in shops and If anything like this had happened i would have been apologetic and done my best to fix it.

He just wasn't interested and I'm convinced he's done it on purpose but I cannot prove it.

Go back. Be polite but firm, tell them you aren’t moving until you are refunded.
Do you have someone who could go with?

Creambun2 · 12/04/2018 20:32

I'd love to live in these mythical places were their are legions of police and council officials available to rush and investigate everything. Even in large LAs trading standards departments have been cut to the bone, ditto environmental health that deluded people think are just sitting their to deal with any perceived noise issues.

Ninjamilo · 12/04/2018 20:33

Of course the bank won't refund, if a pin is put in yore confirming the amount..l

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 20:33

Patti I actually had my card in my hand when I walked in to the shop. That's a good point. I won't do that in future.

Nin that's what I thought but wasn't sure if it was worth a shot anyway. Obviously not 😕

Did you do contactless?

silverbirches · 12/04/2018 20:37

Another vote for reporting it to the police, he might have done this to other people as well, who haven't noticed yet.

Kahlua4me · 12/04/2018 20:38

I would contact Trading Standards. It may be that other people have also reported this shop for the same thing and then your info will help them to collate a case against them.

As with all council services, yes they are cut to the bone, but they also have a service to provide and all calls are logged and dealt with. They don’t simply ignore them because they feel like it....

lilyboleyn · 12/04/2018 20:38

Dispute with your bank. Phone them now if they’re open, otherwise first thing.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/04/2018 20:39

If he entered the prices himself it could just be fat fingers or he could be up to something.

I probably don't pay as much attention as I should when paying contactless, but it seems like an easy way for unscrupulous retailers to rip people off, especially when you have those people who always use contactless and never use cash, because their statement is going to be as long as their arm and most people won't bother checking it so won't notice any problems.

Another reason to continue to use cash I think, as they are more likely to announce the total rather than just see your card and mumble while waving their hand in the direction of the card machine.

If you hand cash over and receive change, the whole transaction is much more visual and this sort of thing wouldn't happen.

savagebaggagemaster · 12/04/2018 20:42

I'll bet the £20 is now in his pocket

letsdolunch321 · 12/04/2018 20:42

I would take a photo of items, receipt & a photo of the man who served me. At least you have proof then.

italiancortado · 12/04/2018 20:42

Have you checked your pending bank balance to see if this is also the amount charged to your card?

If the till isn't coded and it's all manual input it's unlikely the card machine is linked. I often see machines where the cashier has to manually enter the amount on the card machine.

It's still possible that the correct amount was entered on the card machine.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 12/04/2018 20:42

Absolutely - of course something can be done! Complain to the boss, to the bank, to whoever! Refunds are completely possible, and if the shop won't then the bank can, and then they can investigate.

Why on earth not? Why roll over for 20 quid! It's a lot of money!

letsdolunch321 · 12/04/2018 20:43

Bet your bottom dollar the £20.00 is in his pocket - Theiving bastard

GabsAlot · 12/04/2018 20:44

the bank wont refund u if its a pin they'll say its on youy to check the amount first

go back when the regular man is there and show him yhour receipt

snewsname · 12/04/2018 20:44

But what I don't understand is if this guy was an employee, how was he actually going to get the money as the cash till won't balance if he takes out the extra charge in cash. As far as the shop is concerned it's all in order, unless management is on it.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/04/2018 20:46

So you dont actually have any proof you were overcharged? Not sure what you can do here except complain to the owner and hope he is more reasonable.

Small shops usually say check your change before you leave as mistakes cannot be rectified afterwards, its your word against his.

I bet the shop does have a bottle of red wine for £23.

Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 20:47

Italian thanks, just checked, yep, full amount pending Sad

OP posts:
BarbaraofSevillle · 12/04/2018 20:48

Does the shop do cashback? Could the ITEM00999 be cashback that you didn't get obviously but would allow £22 to be taken out of the till without arousing suspicion.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/04/2018 20:49

The shop could have wine or spirits that cost £22 so its not all mars bars and chewing gum, but even so.

trappedinsuburbia · 12/04/2018 20:51

Id actually go and stand in the shop and call the police from there if he doesn't refund you. In fact I would report it anyway even if he did.

UpstartCrow · 12/04/2018 20:51

You can complain to the bank. The receipt doesnt show anything that will back up the shops claim, and theres CCTV.

Oakmaiden · 12/04/2018 20:53

Thing is - if you paid by card then there is no way he can take your money. If he took your £20 from the till (to steal) then the cash balance would be out, and it would be obvious. He can't get it from your card.

Unless he is the shop owner, then I would assume this was just an accident. Go back when the normal guy is there and get it sorted (hopefully).
