Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Sugar tax

Bimbaloo · 07/04/2018 15:11

Nope, that'll be the sugar tax.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 07/04/2018 15:11

Pfft posted too soon

I'm personally blaming Jamie Oliver.Grin

Hobnobsarenotfordunking · 07/04/2018 15:12

I bought 8 cans for £3.50 in my Asda today.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 07/04/2018 15:13

Its usually between £6-£7 for 30 cans. It was £8.50 for 24 yesterday Shock

36 cans in Farmfoods (2 x 18 cans) are about £11

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 07/04/2018 15:13

I didn't realise the tax would have that much effect but if it has and stops people buying it that's great. I love fizzy drinks but no longer drink them I just think it's an easy way to avoid overdoing it on sugar.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 07/04/2018 15:14

I'm also too blaming Jamie Oliver. What's it to everyone if I want a can of coke? I'm slim and play sports so I shouldn't be taxed the same as alcohol.

A 2lt bottle of Pepsi has gone from £1 to £2 in Asda which is ridiculous.

Teacuphiccup · 07/04/2018 15:14

Have they not just put the price up for a bit so they can sell it for £4 next week and say it’s half price?
Sainsbury’s do that all the time.

mum11970 · 07/04/2018 15:16

£7.50 for 30 cans of Diet Coke. If you want sugar you have to pay for it.

YouTheCat · 07/04/2018 15:17

The alternative is filling yourself full of harmful sweeteners. It's ridiculous. Plus the zero sugar stuff is just as bad for teeth because of the carbonated water.

I don't drink soft drinks very often. I wonder if tonic has gone up though. Hmm

Whatthefunk · 07/04/2018 15:18

Coke is the work of Satan. Ban the stuff I say!!

formerbabe · 07/04/2018 15:19

The alternative is filling yourself full of harmful sweeteners

Or having a glass of water

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 15:19

Good. Hopefully this will lessen the burden on the NHS. It's a shame that responsible people who lay for insurance/are reasonable on the way they consume sugar not allowing to impact on their health will get caught up in this but I suppose this is the only option when living in a prolific welfare state.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/04/2018 15:19

Watch the videos of the "Coca-Cola Rodeos" (they sponser them) , if that doesn't stop you buying it then you have a black hole where your heart should be .

Sad
MorningsEleven · 07/04/2018 15:19

I'm willing to bet the shops have added a bit extra on to the sugar tax - good way to raise prices but blame the government.

malmi · 07/04/2018 15:19

Haha, I shouldn't have to pay the tax on alcohol because I don't binge drink.

I shouldn't have to pay the tax on cigarettes because I don't have lung cancer.

I shouldn't have to pay the tax on fuel because I hardly use the car.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 07/04/2018 15:20

Yes because coke is why the nhs is collapsing

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 15:20

I haven't been shopping today, are the shops now charging different prices for the different types of Coke? Is diet coke and coke zero going to cost less than the normal ones now?

mum11970 · 07/04/2018 15:21

How come the sugar tax doesn’t actually seem to apply to actual granulated sugar? Half Spoon costs approx. 3 times as much as normal granulated.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 07/04/2018 15:22

I'm not a burden on the government - I've never had a hospital stay in my life. Neither am I obese or unfit or have any lasting damage from drinking coca-cola.

As with anything else if you eat pizza to excess you will cause yourself damage, if you eat chips you'll do the same. Why should it be coca-cola that is taxed? Just because Jamie Oliver decides it's unhealthy. Its just another reason to generate money.

FinnegansCake · 07/04/2018 15:24

It’s still too cheap.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 07/04/2018 15:24

But how much coke do you drink?!

30 cans?

YouTheCat · 07/04/2018 15:25

Some full sugar drinks don't seem to be affected. I'm presuming this means some have less sugar than others. Fevertree stuff has the tax on but shops' own tonic doesn't.

And as for 'have a glass of water' - why? Sometimes I don't want a glass of water.

SleepFreeZone · 07/04/2018 15:26

I haven’t drunk Coke since I was a kid. Just stop buying the vile stuff.

AJPTaylor · 07/04/2018 15:26

But it will change peoples habits.
Look at the naysayers about banning smoking in public spaces and plain packaging. It makes a difference.
