Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

I don't think food or drink should ever be a treat Tiredeypops.

Currently the only thing helping with heartburn is Pepsi so now I have to pay an exorbitant amount in order not to vomit my guts up and be readmitted to hospital until I have my baby. I hadn't drunk fizzy drinks for years before this and will be stopping again after baby is here as normally I can't stand them. It seems ridiculous to only target drinks instead of chocolate, biscuits and cakes.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/04/2018 15:46

Yes because coke is why the nhs is collapsing

Not Coke on its own but sugar is having a huge effect on the NHS. A child has a tooth out in hospital every 10 minutes. Then there’s the cost of obesity related illnesses.

I’m glad this tax has come in tbh

Chickychoccyegg · 07/04/2018 15:46

I drink a lot of diet coke - can't be bothered with people telling me I should cut down .
I don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol, am not over weight, never been in hospital apart from when i was giving birth and never at the dr - if the price has gone up due to sugar tax I'll be annoyed but wouldn't stop me buying it

Lovemusic33 · 07/04/2018 15:50

It’s not just fizzy drinks though. My daughter has had teeth out in hospital and she has never touched fizzy drinks. Sugar is in almost everything now, even bread. Taxing fizzy drinks won’t make much of a dent in the problem.

ScreamingValenta · 07/04/2018 15:51

Chickychoccyegg Surely the diet versions of drinks won't be affected as they don't contain sugar?

squarecorners · 07/04/2018 15:52

Start a "business" and get yourself a cash and carry card. I still have the number from my old job (they don't care what I buy if I'm paying cash myself) and it's great for buying things like pop.

MysweetAudrina · 07/04/2018 15:53

Lucky for me my drink of choice is coke zero. I have a 500ml bottle every day. Don't really like alcohol or coffee but I love coke zero.

viques · 07/04/2018 15:54

Apparently the equivalent of 70000 school days were missed last year due to kids having hospital treatment for rotten teeth.

As far as adults are concerned drink all the overpriced sugar water you want , but if the sugar tax stops some fat kids teeth being rotted for no reason then it's a good thing.

suzy2b · 07/04/2018 15:59

For over 20yrs i drank 3-4 cans of diet coke every day then was ill for a couple of weeks then couldn't stand it wondered what i was going to drink started to drink 7up then found lidi's version much cheaper now they have stopped selling it so back to 7up

AnnieAnoniMouser · 07/04/2018 16:01

Bugger, I should have got some with the last Tesco order. I only have it occasionally as a mixer, so it won’t impact me that much, but I’d have a got a few in if I’d thought about it...probably other stuff too.

I wonder who & how it will impact, really?

Personally it won’t change what I buy, it’ll just be a general shopping price hike.

It’s not suddenly going to make people living on crap food start to buy veg, it’s not going to stop people buying fizzy drinks, those who drink gallons of it & can’t imagine life without it. It’s not going to stop kids buying fizzy drinks/sweets with their lunch or pocket money, they’ll just end up being given more money.

I just think it's going to ‘cost more’, make people worse off and not change what people eat/buy.

2kidsnopets · 07/04/2018 16:01

I wonder how long it will be before the price of non taxed diet coke magically aligns itself with the full sugar version so they can make a bit of extra profit.

Kazzyhoward · 07/04/2018 16:01

Is diet coke and coke zero going to cost less than the normal ones now?

They SHOULD be cheaper, but it seems a lot of outlets have put up prices of all types for simplicity/consistency which is completely out of order. For the sugar tax to work, the cost of low sugar drinks should be obviously cheaper than sugary ones - seeing diet coke bottle at £1 alongside a sugar version coke at £1.15 is what will change behaviour. If retailers/restaurants aren't charging differential prices, then the govt needs to intervene to force them to.

SleepFreeZone · 07/04/2018 16:03

I’m fascinated by those on here saying they are drinking 30 cans a week!! What are you teeth like? Are you happy for your kids to drink a shit ton of coke too?

Panicmode1 · 07/04/2018 16:04

I am all in favour of a healthier nation = less burden on the NHS, but I don't think this is the way to do it at all. I don't believe that sweeteners are any healthier for you than sugar, and there is NO evidence that a sugar tax works - there is a long article in the Telegraph magazine today regarding Mexico and how they still have a horrendous obesity problem, which has not improved, despite having had a sugar tax for some years now.

I think it's totally illogical to tax just fizzy drinks, but people can still buy junk food easily and cheaply....and the real issue is that people aren't taking enough exercise.

I am only irritated by it because other than tonic, we don't buy fizzy drinks, but we did have Ribena as our squash, because it was all natural, British and my friend's father used to grow the blackcurrants so I felt I was supporting him - but now, because they have stuffed it full of artificial sweeteners, which I don't give to my (very skinny with no decaying teeth) children, at meal times only, I'm buying a more expensive, organic, sugar full version.

M4MMY · 07/04/2018 16:06

I'm a big fan of trying to get people to reduce their sugar intake. I just wish everyone's health was given consideration and alternatives to aspartame could be used...

ScreamingValenta · 07/04/2018 16:06

Tesco online is selling 10 x standard coke for 4.50 and 12 diet coke for 4.50 (with 50p off the diet coke at the moment) so it looks as if the bulk cans are being sold at the same price point but with quantity adjusted.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 07/04/2018 16:08

No logic
I have a can a week usually
Not eating chocolate, biscuits, cake except as treats
Are they going up? I don't tend to buy them, it's usually a "cheer up at work" treat.

PinkHeart5914 · 07/04/2018 16:12

I buy 1x 6 pack of cans a week and have 1 can a day mid afternoon, I eat 3 healthy meals a day & exercise with no weight issues so I don’t see my daily cola as an issue.

I will obviously pay the higher price becuase that’s what it now costs and I want my Cola but why is it drinks that are being picked on and seen as evil? In the bakery bit in most supermarkets you can get 5 doughnuts or cookies for around a £1 and come 3:30/4pm in the superstore local to my house you can’t move for dc with these items so things like that are just as bad and need targeting

StrawberrySquash · 07/04/2018 16:16

I imagine it's a combination of sugar tax and supermarkets changing offers so prices on stuff like Coke go up and down all the time.
It does seem a bit odd to just tax drinks, but I guess they are trying it step by step. I'm not in favour of the way so many drinks are becoming the 'healthier' version just because they are sweetner filled. I don't buy that they are any better for you than full sugar. There's evidence sweetners still mess with blood sugar. Fundamentally, most of what we drink shouldn't be sweetened in any way. A sweet drink should be a treat.

CaveMum · 07/04/2018 16:17

It doesn’t matter how “healthy” you think you are, you can exercise the everyday, eat loads of fruit and vegetables, etc but if you take in too much sugar then you ARE leading an unhealthy lifestyle.

It’s worth listening to the start of Friday’s Jeremy Vine Show on the iPlayer, he had a cardiologist who has been campaigning for the Sugar Tax for years on and some of the stuff he has found through his research is eye opening.

I also recommend reading this long article from The Guardian: www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 07/04/2018 16:18

I can quite easily drink 30 cans in a week! So no, providing I stay fit. I play 90mins of football every week, I play another sport four times a week and tennis in summer....it doesn't cause me any damage or hospital stays.

30 cans a week? Shock

What are your teeth like? They must be made of diamond or something!

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 16:25

I don’t know anyone who drinks coke without alcohol in. I really didn’t think that was a thing people did?!

I can only assume you don't know any actual people or live in a cave Grin. It is impossible otherwise to not know that cola type drinks are drunk on their own.

Roussette · 07/04/2018 16:25

I wondered who all these people were that drank loads of coke and I think they're on this thread! Do you drink it instead of water or tea or something?

I just don't understand when you drink it. I only buy it at Christmas when rellies come here in case someone wants it. No one, DH or DCs or me drinks cans of fizzy drinks.

Funnily enough I had someone to stay a while back and I asked her what sort of foods she would like etc etc (it was a friend of a friend and I was helping out with accommodation). She said as long as you have two 2litre bottles of coke in, I'll be fine! I was Shock at this, not the cost, but the necessity to have coke in.

I just don't get it because I don't understand when you drink it. I have two cups of tea first thing, a coffee mid morn if I'm home, a cup of tea mid afternoon and a pint of water at night, plus more water when thirsty.

There must be something in it that's addictive

gamerwidow · 07/04/2018 16:26

Sugary drinks are a major cause of obesity which is a major health risk in the same way that smoking or drinking alcohol is.
No one is saying we can't drink whatever we like but if it costs the public purse then it should be taxed.

PinkHeart5914 · 07/04/2018 16:32

Do you drink it instead of water or tea or something? Umm no I have 1 can a day along side plenty of water and my 1 morning coffee. I drink it becuase I like it
