Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Why is drinking Coke any odder than drinking orange and lemonade?

It's not really. I wouldn't habitually drink that at home either. I suppose the orange has some vitamin c in it! Grin

Notwellbitch · 07/04/2018 16:53

Erm...or just buy one can? If you want a sugar hit...a nice can of coke, there's no need to buy 18 cans! It's something to be had on occasion. Not bought in bulk unless for parties

I have an occasional can of coke at home. When I fancy one I don't want to have to go out and drive all the way to the shop for 1 can so I buy a tray or box of them that lasts for months and works out cheaper. It's really not that weird.

megletthesecond · 07/04/2018 16:54

I don't even get through 3 cans of fizz in a year Shock. Never touch diet drinks though, full sugar on high days and holidays.

megletthesecond · 07/04/2018 16:54

Meant to say 30 cans a year.

I mean drinking alcohol at home is alien to me, because I don't drink alcohol at all, but I know that numerous people all over the U.K do, and the concept doesn't baffle me at all so why are some puzzled by the idea of people drinking Coke?

emma6776 · 07/04/2018 16:59

Pepsi Max is the same as Diet Coke though? Both sugar free so not sure why one would be taxed in a pub and the other not?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/04/2018 16:59
Brew
NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/04/2018 16:59

Omg whatever. I’m not judging or attacking, just stating that I have never seen another adult drink coke like that.

madfootyfan22 · 07/04/2018 17:00

I recon it will come out in years to come that the stuff they put in diet drinks is more harmful than sugar

Chrys2017 · 07/04/2018 17:01

Perhaps they will start producing sugar-free/sweetener-free Coke and everyone can add their own.
Is there also a tax on actual sugar?

Playdohnut · 07/04/2018 17:02

At McDonalds, "normal" coke is 9p more expensive than diet version due to the sugar tax. So sounds like Asda are just whacking up prices to garner more profit for themselves.

Celebelly · 07/04/2018 17:03

This thread is one of the most bizarre I've read in a while. Do some people really think people don't drink Coke on its own?! Sometimes I think Mumsnet is some weird alternate universe populated by aliens who have just landed on earth. Or a social experiment. One of the two.

Prancingonthevalentine · 07/04/2018 17:04

I drink at least two cans a day of Diet Coke, have done for most of my life. I drink alcohol once a month at most. Why is one weird and the other isn't?

Kazzyhoward · 07/04/2018 17:05

I wondered who all these people were that drank loads of coke and I think they're on this thread! Do you drink it instead of water or tea or something?

Personally, I don't drink alcohol, so diet coke is my alternative when I'm in a pub with friends drinking lager or spirits, or when I'm having a meal with people drinking wine.

Chrys2017 · 07/04/2018 17:05

he told us the Pepsi max would be 30p more due to the sugar tax

Now that is taking the piss, as Pepsi Max doesn't contain sugar!

Kazzyhoward · 07/04/2018 17:06

It's just that it's expensive and addictive and sugary and I can't see the point.

Sounds like a lot of alcoholic drinks to me!

19lottie82 · 07/04/2018 17:06

he told us the Pepsi max would be 30p more due to the sugar tax

But Pepsi max is sugar free, the same as Diet Coke?

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 17:07

Pepsi Max is the same as Diet Coke though? Both sugar free so not sure why one would be taxed in a pub and the other not?

I don't think that's right, diet Pepsi and diet Coke are the same but Coke Zero and Pepsi Max are different drinks. Personally I don't think they taste the same but I haven't looked up the ingredients so don't know which ones if any are affected by the sugar tax

WonderLime · 07/04/2018 17:08

I love how there are people on this thread proudly declaring that they drink 30 cans a week, but they are fit, healthy weight, don't smoke, etc so it's fine.

I'm fairly certain you wouldn't agree if someone said they smoked n amount of cigarettes a week, but didn't drink, never in the hospital. You'd say (quite rightly) that it will be having an effect even if you don't realise it at the moment. The same can be said from consuming excessive amounts of sugar (not to mention the damage they cause to your teeth).

As an aside - someone mentioned carbonated water being bad for your teeth - well actually there really isn't any evidence that it is. The studies around fizzy drinks are usually ones that contain sugar, so it's hard to qualify the evidence. I've not seen any firm, peer related stupid that have concluded that they do cause damage (plenty of pseudoscience though).

snowagain · 07/04/2018 17:11

Where is all that money going that we are being robbed of?

pestilentialboundary · 07/04/2018 17:12

I honestly don't have any close friends family who drink coke daily. I also don't know anyone who puts 7 sugars in a cup of tea. In life we tend to gravitate towards people who have similar outlooks to ourselves.

Educating people that too much sugar is bad, has failed. I doubt sugar tax will be any more effective, sugar is very addictive. Presumably a tax on sweet food will follow, and be equally ineffective.

Research already shows that sweeteners confuse the body and increase insulin production.

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 17:12

What do you mean by money we are being robbed of?

Roussette · 07/04/2018 17:12

I get that if you don't drink alcohol you might have a coke in the pub. But unless you are drinking alcohol all day, you wouldn't be drinking coke during the day

The person who drinks 30 in a week, that's 4 or 5 a day Shock

snowagain · 07/04/2018 17:13

We all have sugar free coke anyway in my family, so I will be royally fucked off if THAT has doubled in price.
