Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Mind you, I would class myself as having an addictive personality so it's probably a good job I'm not that into coke.

Kazzyhoward · 07/04/2018 17:16

I can understand people drinking it in a pub as a soft drink but drinking it at home all day is something quite alien to me!

Looking at the amount of multi pack cans of booze that people have in their shopping trolleys, it certainly looks as though there are people drinking lager at home all day. What's the difference?

Moonandstars84 · 07/04/2018 17:16

Most restaurants are now only doing free refills on sugar free drinks. Dh likes coke and has two glasses when out. I have diet coke and get free refills. So that's a 100% mark up on his coke. Will it stop him drinking it? No.
Incidentally I am obese and he is not.
I think the Harvester got mixed up.

expatinscotland · 07/04/2018 17:16

The trouble is, in countries that already have this tax, there hasn't so far been a corresponding drop in obesity. But hey, it's a way to tax people more and to scapegoat things and people! Yay, hurray!

iamyourequal · 07/04/2018 17:16

Who on Earth calls a can of Coke a ‘tin’??!!

Teufelsrad · 07/04/2018 17:18

"I honestly don't have any close friends family who drink coke daily. I also don't know anyone who puts 7 sugars in a cup of tea. In life we tend to gravitate towards people who have similar outlooks to ourselves."

I can't say that I select my friends based on their choice of beverages.

I suppose I don't know anyone who sits at home all day drinking lager so my demographic is quite limited

Yep, had me confused that I had clicked on the wrong title for a minute. Drinks come in cans, food in tins.

Firesuit · 07/04/2018 17:20

I saw some interesting flavours of Coke in Asda today, mango, cherry and vanilla. But it was all diet or zero, which I don't like. I searched the store but they appeared not to have any normal Coke.

Bimbaloo · 07/04/2018 17:21

They often say tin instead of can in Ireland.

EssentialHummus · 07/04/2018 17:21

What fucks me off is that recently my local Sainsbury’s has taken the Coke out of their “Food to Go” section - all the choices there are sugar free. Same in a nearby Morrisons. Charge me whatever you like, but don’t hide it and assume I won’t notice. (FWIW I have a can of fizzy drink maybe once every three weeks.)

lalalalyra · 07/04/2018 17:21

This annoys the life out of me. I don't drink alcohol, or tea, or coffee. People can merrily have their teas and coffees with umpteen spoons of sugar without any interferance, but heave forbid I want a can of coke or a glass of diluting juice that's not full of artificial sweeteners.

Most people wouldn't dream of not having tea or coffee, yet "have water" is the acceptable response to people complaining about this. It's not going to make a jot of difference to the obesity crisis - why would we be any different to any other country that tried it?

At least coca-cola have stuck to their guns with their recipe. Unlike Barrs who have absolutely destroyed Irn Bru.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 07/04/2018 17:26

Blame Jamie Oliver, interfering twat! Everyone is like oh just drink Diet Coke..... erm how about it tastes like crap sooo no 😖

CakeOfThePan · 07/04/2018 17:26

....bloody love a coke float on a hot day

Celebelly · 07/04/2018 17:27

'"I honestly don't have any close friends family who drink coke daily. I also don't know anyone who puts 7 sugars in a cup of tea. In life we tend to gravitate towards people who have similar outlooks to ourselves."

Yeah that's true actually. I had to break up with a friend recently because I watched her making tea and she used three sugars in her own. THREE. I told her 'I don't care about the years of support and friendship we've had, you are a sugar-guzzling monster and we don't share the same outlook on life any more. Good luck.'

Looking for a new friend to fill the gap - must have one sugar or less in their tea to apply.

Cagliostro · 07/04/2018 17:29

That’s a good point, do you have to pay more in Costa if you want sugar with your tea

Mogleflop · 07/04/2018 17:30

Mmmm. I want a cherry coke now 🥤

Fanciedachange1 · 07/04/2018 17:30

Celebelly, I have very weak tea, no sugar and just a tiny (literal) drop of milk. Interested?

I don't drink coke, can't stand the taste, and the only fizzy drink I have is the occasional Lemonade as a mixer. I can't see how this tax is going to help. All it seems to do is make people angry but won't stop them drinking it.

flowerslemonade · 07/04/2018 17:32

i'm similar - i don't drink alcohol, smoke or drink tea or coffee. i do love diet coke.

what i've noticed has happened in tesco is the price has stayed the same, so a can of diet coke is 70p, and the regular coke equivalent is 70p but it's a smaller can now. it won't affect me as i only like diet coke but i imagine it will affect a lot of people. at least the smaller version is available so if someone is struggling for money they can still have their treat but in a smaller size i guess.

i don't really get why drinks are targetted and food isn't. to me the problem seems to be PORTION SIZE not anything else.

e.g. i've noticed when i have cereal, if it's one of those multipack things i probably have half of one as standard, that's what i'd been taking from a large packet, didn't realise that wasn't right. whereas my friend said she was having the equivalent of about 3 packets (!). the same with evening meals, it seems to be the portion size that makes the difference.

Yogafailure · 07/04/2018 17:33

I don't drink coffee. Can't stand it. Almost everyone else I know drinks coffee in some form or another. They spend ages in Costa deciding which mocha/latte/flat whatever to have. It means nothing to me.

I guess I also don't choose my friends based on what they choose to drink Hmm

flowerslemonade · 07/04/2018 17:36

some of the drinks in starbucks and other places are 600 calories, they'd be better targetting that.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/04/2018 17:37

600 calories? Is that from sugar??

italiancortado · 07/04/2018 17:37

It's a tin of juice in my part of Scotland

Lovemusic33 · 07/04/2018 17:40

Costa and Starbucks are awful for high sugar. I don’t understand people that drink it every day. Some of their mocha, cappuccino and hot chocolates are very high in calories (more than what I consume in a meal). I only ever have one as a treat and it’s usually when I’m Christmas shopping and they have their Christmas specials.
