Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

I wondered who all these people were that drank loads of coke and I think they're on this thread! Do you drink it instead of water or tea or something?

I'm wondering how there are now 2 people on the threead who don't know that people drink coke because they like it Shock

You seriously don't know that people drink things other than water and tea? This is getting odd, how can, I assume, an adult not know that other adults drink all kinds of drinks at all times of day?

Funnily enough I don't actually like Coke so don't drink it but it's perfectly obvious to me that other people do and in large quantities

Yogafailure · 07/04/2018 16:38

I drink tea. I drink water. I drink full fat coke.

Mainly because I want to/I like it.

And as my half century approaches I'm unlikely to change my habits/tastes because someone on the net got sneery about it.

sheesh

AjasLipstick · 07/04/2018 16:38

The alternative is filling yourself full of harmful sweeteners. It's ridiculous. Plus the zero sugar stuff is just as bad for teeth because of the carbonated water.

Erm...or just buy one can? If you want a sugar hit...a nice can of coke, there's no need to buy 18 cans! It's something to be had on occasion. Not bought in bulk unless for parties.

DerelictWreck · 07/04/2018 16:38

Price of a can of coke has only gone up 8p from Sugar Tax - so those prices don't make much sense!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/04/2018 16:39

I didn’t mean it in a horrible way, i just mean that to me, drinking a pint of coke would be the equivalent of drinking a pint of tonic water. It’s a mixer. I have never been out with an adult and seen them drink plain coke.

Roussette · 07/04/2018 16:39

Yes, I'm one of the two that didn't know!

It's just that it's expensive and addictive and sugary and I can't see the point.

This stupidity of not knowing might be because I know absolutely no-one who drinks coke as a matter of course daily. No friends, no work people, no family, no acquaintances.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/04/2018 16:40

If you don’t want a glass of water then how about a cup of herbal tea, some squash

Squash is effected too! It is VERY hard to find a squash without artificial sweeteners in now because the manufacturers are worried people won’t pay the higher price. I can’t remember the last time I drank coke but I do enjoy a glass or two of squash per week, or tonic (sometimes even without gin) but I now have to be super careful because recipes are changing secretly and I get quite unwell (in other words I get the screaming shits) if I ingest artificial sweeteners.

AjasLipstick · 07/04/2018 16:41

Umbongo you've never been somewhere with an adult and seen them drink a coke? Confused Really? Who do you hang out with? I'm thinking heavy drinkers or nuns.

YouTheCat · 07/04/2018 16:42

Ajas, I don't know why you've quoted me regarding 18 cans as I've said a couple of times that I rarely drink fizzy drinks anyway.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 07/04/2018 16:42

I have never been out with an adult and seen them drink plain coke.

Really?! I mean, I think coke is pretty much poison, but people drink it all the time in pubs, restaurants etc out of those tap things? I do think buying cans for home consumption is weird, but obvs different strokes.

For me, coke is for mixing with vodka and Jack Daniels, and for medicinal hangover purposes.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/04/2018 16:42

Well, most people I know would have a hot drink during the day and alcohol in the evenings.

Or orange and lemonade or something like that.

lynmilne65 · 07/04/2018 16:42

Don't want water Envy

Mammalamb · 07/04/2018 16:42

I’m obese. The sugar tax on soft drinks isn’t going to make even a tiny bit of difference. I rarely drink fizzy drinks in the first place. But rationing of sugary food would make a massive difference to me

Mum2jenny · 07/04/2018 16:43

Just paid stupid money for squash with no artificial sweeteners and a sparkling fruit drink. At least the sugar tax makes it easy to see which drinks are full of the artificial sweeteners, at least in sainsburys, as the label mentions the sugar tax......so I can avoid them!

Teufelsrad · 07/04/2018 16:43

When I drink it? When I want to. When I'm thirsty. I just pour it into a glass. There's no secret ritual that I have to undertake before I do so it's easy.

habibihabibi · 07/04/2018 16:43

It won't be long before it'll be cheaper to do a line of Coke for a 4pm pick me upGrin
Love this !

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 07/04/2018 16:44

I wonder if in a few years drinking coke will be seen like smoking? Hardly anyone takes up smoking these days do they? For one thing cigarettes cost a fucking fortune now! I suppose there isn't the anti social smoke and smelliness aspect with fizzy drinks, but the health implications are probably similar.

Teufelsrad · 07/04/2018 16:45

I also drink tea, coffee, milk, water, fruit juice, rose lemonade etc. It doesn't stop me from having Diet Coke sometimes.

GreyGardens88 · 07/04/2018 16:46

The worst thing about this sugar tax is all the holier than thou **heads boasting about how they never touch coke anyway

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 16:46

But Rousette you've already posted about your friend who asked you to buy Coke so obviously you do know that people drink it because they like it.

Notumbongo - did you think that the Coca Cola company spend billions of ££ on advertising for something that people use a splash of as a mixer? You've never seen a diet Coke ad or wondered why shop selves are groaning under the weight of cola type drinks?

I can't help but think that you are both being either ingenuous or virtue signalling in some way

Bimbaloo · 07/04/2018 16:46

I wonder if in a few years drinking coke will be seen like smoking?

I very much doubt it.

Roussette · 07/04/2018 16:46

The only time I've had a coke is when I've got a mahoosive hangover and the fizziness of it has helped.

I can understand people drinking it in a pub as a soft drink but drinking it at home all day is something quite alien to me!

In the summer I might drink Ribena (but not now they've changed the recipe) or something else to mix with water but wouldn't dream of a fizzy drink unless it's a splash of tonic with a lot of gin
Grin

Teufelsrad · 07/04/2018 16:48

Why is drinking Coke any odder than drinking orange and lemonade?

buddahbelly · 07/04/2018 16:48

I was at a harvester earlier on today, one where the drinks are refillable, the man asked what drink I said Diet Coke, my sister said Pepsi max. he told us the Pepsi max would be 30p more due to the sugar tax, so she said well ill have Diet Coke then.

He brought over 2 empty glasses and pointed us in the direction of the drinks machine. I got my Diet Coke she got her Pepsi max. we were charged for not having sugar.

Yet another thing that the rest of the world will laugh at us over, fucking ridiculous thing to bring in considering the state of the country and their position in the world.

Roussette · 07/04/2018 16:49

Yes Patti she was the only one. So obviously I knew there was one person but I didn't think lots did it!

I'm totally dim about this, and yes you're right about the shelves groaning with cans of coke, I should've realised. I just thought people bought a 24 pack for Christmas for a treat or something!
