Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

In my pub full fat coke, red bull and normal tonic are only available on request at a 15p surcharge. Standard serve is now coke zero, sugar free red bull and slimline tonic. Same goes for cocktails and bombs. Lemonade is exempt.

Sallystyle · 09/04/2018 12:15

I have no problem with sweetners obviously, considering how much I consume.

I don't agree with them adding them to everything though. I can't stand normal coke, the taste is far too sweet for me and sickly. Other people can't stand sweetners.

Sweetners are being added to everything and that isn't fair. It does not bother me at all on a personal level, but it does bother many people and choice is being slowly taking away and that is a problem.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/04/2018 12:17

But yeah, pump people full of artificial sweeteners instead. Why not?

Well, no-one's forcing anyone to drink the stuff. I would hope the effect in general, over time will be to make healthier choices. The reality is that neither lots of sugar or lots of sweeteners are good for us.

I've done some satellite work around the FDA guidelines in the US on some of the ingredients in Coke and similar drinks, and despite the 'official' position, I wouldn't touch either the sugar or non-sugar versions now. Some of the ingredients are very problematic, in my view.

I have blood sugar issues as well - I find that plain sugar/fruit cordials are pretty good.

Lumpolard · 09/04/2018 12:18

If what is being said on this thread is true, it sounds like a great business opportunity for someone here to start a business selling drinks sweetned only with large quantities of sugar, because apparently people will pay the extra.

CakeOfThePan · 09/04/2018 12:22

Went to Nando’s yesterday, asked for two refill drinks, they asked what we would have (thought this was weird but didn’t twig) said coke (didn’t really know as they were for others so just said it) that was an error 30p more than anything else!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 12:25

I definitely would Lumpolard, which is why I pay nearly £4 a bottle for Belvoir cordial.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/04/2018 12:28

Making cordial is dead easy to be honest, no more complicated than jam. We usually make some elderflower cordial in May when the blossom is out and it lasts most of the year.

VedderEdder · 09/04/2018 12:36

Who buys 30 cans of Coke a week?! Disgusting. Pour it in your eyes

PeachyPeachTrees · 09/04/2018 12:38

It's not just the sugar in fizzy drinks that's bad for teeth, it's also the acid content that dissolves the enamel on teeth. So it's still worth avoiding.

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 09/04/2018 13:47

I have the odd can of full sugar cherry coke every now and then i'd prob say no more than 10 cans a year.

I'm an absolute herbal tea nut now.

LMG132028 · 09/04/2018 14:35

Yep it’s the damn sugar tax. I popped in Tesco on my way to work the other day, grabbed a smal bottle, usually they’re 500ml but this one was 375ml but they still wanted me to pay £1.25 for it!! There was no price sticker on the shelf so I had to wait until I got to the checkout & when it came up as £1.25 I just asked the cashier to cancel it. She said it was the sugar tax & she couldn’t believe how ridiculous the price was either!

MaggieS41 · 09/04/2018 16:36

Sprinklesinmyelbow you’ve missed the point. It’s about shit finally being found out in years to come. Just because some official said it’s safe to eat artificial processed foods because they’ve done clinical tests on a few people it doesn’t mean it is. I’m not saying artificial sweeteners cause emphysema or lung cancer Hmm

peacheachpearplum · 09/04/2018 17:28

I was just in Asda, 2 ltr bottle of Pepsi was £1.89 the diet version was £1.29, I didn't realise it would be such a big difference. Coke was dearer.

Moonandstars84 · 09/04/2018 17:33

Tax is 24p per litre. Although in restaurants with free refills it is worse as you have to pay more for single servings than the unlimited diet drinks.

Moonandstars84 · 09/04/2018 17:40

I read that the tax will be used on breakfast and sports clubs for kids. Where they will no doubt serve high sugar cereals.

Chattymummyhere · 09/04/2018 17:49

I will still buy as much as I normally do. I don’t drink hot drinks, milk or squash so it’s water, alcohol or pop. The sugar free/diet versions all make me feel ill, too much plain water makes me go to the toilet every 10minutes no lie. Milk I can only drink one glass before it makes me ill and squash just tastes horrible. I have issue around food and drink anyway it has to smell/look right and be the right texture as well as the many other random things my body does.

Clinical tests on just a few people? It’s one of the most tested products in the world!

CaveMum · 09/04/2018 18:09

The cardiologist on the Jeremy Vine Show on Friday talking about how bad sugar is for you is well worth listening back to.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 18:22

I’d still rather take my chances with sugar than drink something I don’t enjoy!

peacheachpearplum · 09/04/2018 18:32

Tax is 24p per litre So the difference at Asda was too much then. I wonder how they justify that?

PattiStanger · 09/04/2018 19:33

They don't have to justify it, like any shop they can charge whatever they like for any product, shoppers need to be a bit more savvy now.

Sprinkles...

What, on animals?

pestilentialboundary · 09/04/2018 20:51

And the results of tests (on people) are not always wonderful www.health.harvard.edu/blog/artificial-sweeteners-sugar-free-but-at-what-cost-201207165030

Blankiefan · 09/04/2018 22:01

Don't forget you pay vat on the levy so your 24p per litre is really 29p per litre.
