To ask how much you are paying for your Summer holiday?

How much do you/are you paying for your Summer holiday? What will you be doing? Abroad, UK, camping or hotel or cottage etc. How long for?

I just want to know if my holidays are very expensive.

The last few years we've been going to the same place and renting fab little cottages, the location is ideal for us and the places we've rented have been lovely, home from home.

A few people have been shocked at how much we've paid but I think they are kidding themselves to think you'd get equivalent in the school holidays for any less.

We usually budget £5 a year for a holiday. This year we are off to Colombia..me, husband and DSD.

Bluebell878275 · 21/04/2018 23:29

Lol.. £5000 even...

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/04/2018 23:31

Lol Bluebell i just assumed at such a cheap trip to Columbia you were perhaps getting a freebie for trafficking the country's finest Grin

Groovee · 21/04/2018 23:42

Caravan in Yorkshire £166 for 3 of us.

blackteasplease · 21/04/2018 23:45

£1400 with two kids plus granny!

FASH84 · 22/04/2018 06:06

Isn't this a silly question? People spend what they can afford or are happy to spend. You can get a £9.50 sun holiday or spend tens of thousands. In the last year we've had a range; a cheap trip to Krakow 5 days very nice hotel and car hire about £250, £6.5k Mexico and have booked a week in September in Cascais, Portugal £1000 air BnB with private pool. A long weekend in Brighton £300, five days in Wales £350. Plus someone else's stag and hen £350 and £450 respectively. All of these are not including spending money which again can vary hugely depending on where you are and how active you are, if you hire cars etc (lying by a pool costs nothing but would drive us insane). We're not restricted by school holidays so can travel when we want and take more trips rather than one really expensive one, we're in Portugal the week the schools go back here, if we'd give a week before it would've cost twice as much.

Nothing!!! My MIL treats us to a holiday every year by the sea.

Which is marvellous and all......she does come with us too.......it’s a grin and bare it type of situation!!

In all seriousness, I’m very grateful to her for that. It lovely to get away xx

CuppaSarah · 22/04/2018 06:53

In August

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 22/04/2018 07:30

We recently booked a one week stay at the Holland campsite Duinrell. 2 adults and 3 kids in a 3 bedroom mobile home during the last week of August. £670. I expect eurotunnel to cost another £100 ish or maybe we'll try the ferry. Spending money i would take around €700.

It's my 40th this year so dh and i are spending a few days in New York to celebrate without dc so maybe £1k for that too

AngryGinger · 22/04/2018 07:35

A week in the Algarve, second week of June for £350 each. There’s only the two of us however, so I imagine

AngryGinger · 22/04/2018 07:37

Pressed send before I finished typing. Imagine not having kids is much cheaper as no extra seat, can stay in hotels with no entertainment etc. We will still need spending money of course. Hotel is B&B only.

PlaymobilPirate · 22/04/2018 08:00

£1800 for a week AI in August for me, dp and ds this year.

A friend has just asked us to go away with them next year so I'm looking for a villa for 6 of us with 2 doubles... our kids can share a room in singles... Can anyone recommend a site where I can search by bedroom type?? They all seem yo be 1 double and 2 single rooms.

Bluebell878275 · 22/04/2018 08:07

CherryChasingDotMuncher Grin Grin Indeed! Presuming you are meaning their coffee....right?? Wink

mrspicklepants27 · 22/04/2018 08:24

£700 for 3 adults and 2 DC villa in Spain for 10 days.. Excluding spending money.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 22/04/2018 08:27

I have been interested by this. I very much appreciated @bobbita's perspective and ideas for people who can't get away.

We haven't done a 'big' family holiday. Ever. Every year we drive to my mum's along the coast and stay in her house, taking trips from there, playing in her garden and doing stuff I used to do as a kid, and only paying for our food and activities. Last year we went to stay in a Travel Inn in Wales with our two DC, to spend time with my DH's parents. That was excellent for family bonding and I liked being away, but the price really did rocket a lot more than I thought, and our bank account took a hit.

Some of my friends are frequently away in exotic locations, it's just the way they are - brought up to love travelling and with finances to match. But I'm trying to save and sometimes it's hard to see them flying off and us being 'stuck' at home. I was wondering how much it would cost to have one of 'those' holidays - with our savings taking such a hit. It's really worth weighing up.

Does everyone pay for the holiday straight out? I work hard to ensure we have nothing on credit, no debts at all, and are building healthy savings. But we also live in a vaire nice are and don't own a house, which is our end goal. I guess as the children grow older, it'll be less of a 'parenting somewhere else' and more of a fun experience which would be worth spending money on!

hungryhippo90 · 22/04/2018 08:31

Our proper holiday is in October- we’re going to Florida for Halloween, the price of that is £7500 for 3 of us Including tickets and dining.

We are going to Spain a few times this summer at a cost of £550 all in for 3 of us the first time.
Second time is £600 for the 3 of us. These are only weekends away.

I think that the average is somewhere between the cost of the cheaper breaks we have and the more expensive holiday we have booked.

Mumtothelittlefella · 22/04/2018 09:05

Up until Christmas the kids school holidays (and mine growing up) were spent in the family caravan down the road (we live on beautiful coast land). We have a holiday box which holds ideas for various daily activities eg a bike ride, picnic at the beach, craft day, family swim etc. The kids love taking it in turns to pick out our daily adventure.

All lovely but the rain. The rain came and spoilt summer for us 😆 so we spent Christmas and new year with the kiddies (2) on the other side of the World which cost £22k but money well spent for us. This summer we’re taking no chances and have booked a villa for two weeks with all the family (13) in Corfu for £16,000 inc flights (£1,230 each). Holidays are a priority for us now. We don’t go out and don’t spend on material things often. I now have a bit of a bug to see more of the World 🗺 but the caravan holidays will always be the best (bar the rain!!)

Aragog · 22/04/2018 09:19

A fair bit for the summer as we are going to California for a couple of weeks, visiting a few places inc San Francisco, Napa, Yosemite and Monterey. It's not cheap.

We are totally stuck to school holidays - I teach. I've had one year where I was working in a different environment and could chose then to take holidays. I priced the exact same holiday up - same everything, just different dates. The price difference was immense - it was more than half the cost (at the time for that particularly France holiday it saved us around £1500) to go at the end of June instead of the end of July. It makes such a massive difference to the cost.

We do go on a number of holidays each year. I know we are very fortunate to be able to afford them, as well as the types of holidays/places, as they aren't cheap. We spend what we can afford and out holidays have changed accordingly over the years as our finances have changed. It doesn't mean that we didn't enjoy those early holidays just as much though.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 22/04/2018 09:20

£720 in the Lake District with cash back! It is a place run by a charity. Never done it before and we are looking forward to it.

Figgygal · 22/04/2018 09:24

I'm utterly horrified by how much things cost Pre kids when could go in term time I've been £200 for weeks in turkey was £1300 for 2 AI in Sri Lanka now I'm looking at £3k for a week in Spain with a 1 year old and 6 year old.

I know it's just what holidays cost but my god I'm tempted not to bother as I worry I'll spend the whole time cross at how much it's cost

Chocolou · 22/04/2018 09:30

£450 on Center Parcs in France for 4 nights. £120 tunnel plus petrol. Will take some food from home to cut costs.

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 22/04/2018 09:37

We got a great deal, £1700 for a family of 4 all inclusive in Spain for the first week of the holidays. Then a weekend at Blackpool at the end of July, but that's more for the dc who really want to go to the pleasure beach.

Kalinka16 · 22/04/2018 11:28

€800 ferry NL to UK (we always take this, saves a mega long drive and channel tunnel/ferry). This year about £700 for our share in a cottage we’re sharing with family. Spends (including English books and clothes) usually come to about £1000 but won’t be so much this year as we’re short on funds.
