To ask how much you are paying for your Summer holiday?

How much do you/are you paying for your Summer holiday? What will you be doing? Abroad, UK, camping or hotel or cottage etc. How long for?

I just want to know if my holidays are very expensive.

The last few years we've been going to the same place and renting fab little cottages, the location is ideal for us and the places we've rented have been lovely, home from home.

A few people have been shocked at how much we've paid but I think they are kidding themselves to think you'd get equivalent in the school holidays for any less.

About £1000 all in if we share with friends (so 4 adults and 2 dc) to France, driving/ferry and a 3 bed villa with pool. We self cater, sometimes buying lunch out but mostly taking food with us and eating at home in the evenings. It works well as it makes the cost reasonable (we all fit in their car) and we all stay in a bigger villa with more amenities than we would on our own. Plus some lovely company.

This summer we're staying in a family caravan in the UK, so only the cost of fuel (maybe £100) plus food shop, plus day trips. Probably change out of £300. We'll mostly be on the beach with the children and we'll use the slow cooker every day for dinner (or BBQ).

We're saving for next year though, when we're planning on going to Legoland Denmark, which will be quite expensive, something like £1500 for 5 days with flights, plus 3x passports need renewing!

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 05/04/2018 10:02

Used Teletext.

I didn't realise teletext was still going!

Fijisky · 05/04/2018 10:09

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoor - it’s a brilliant price and looks really nice. I might look at going may next year with the kids if I can get cheap flights or euro tunnel!

Fijisky · 05/04/2018 10:10

Fairylea- is that family fund ? There a really good charity

babycakes1010 · 05/04/2018 10:12

£3200 in September 2 adults and 3 children 2 weeks all inc to Egypt

GrumpyPantz · 05/04/2018 10:15

We can't afford a holiday and never have been able to. DH and I have never been on holiday in the decade we've been together, we didn't even have a honeymoon. Don't know how people afford to spend thousands on a couple of weeks? Any spare cash we have gets spent on improving our house as we live there 52 weeks a year whereas a holiday would only be 1 or 2 weeks.

Dandellion · 05/04/2018 10:17

Obi, you do realise that some people can afford a foreign holiday and afford to spend money on their house too? No need for the faux shock and the implication that spending on a holiday is feckless.

HRTpatch · 05/04/2018 10:22

kids should be with family
What does that even mean?

irregularegular · 05/04/2018 10:26

About 5000. Singapore/Borneo for 2 weeks, so not very comparable. For 4 of us, flights (international and internal) are about 2,300 and accommodation about 1500. The rest we will spend on food/activities once there. Mostly fairly cheap, but a few activities will cost more.

lynmilne65 · 05/04/2018 10:26

£7000 for 3 adults and 2 kiddies in Gran Canaria

Haisuli · 05/04/2018 10:27

My sister says the same as you Grumpy. I say let it fall to pieces, I want sun on my face and to see all the places. It would be nice if it wasn't one or the other...

irregularegular · 05/04/2018 10:29

My 4 includes a 14 and 16 year old so basically adult rates. It was cheaper when they were little!

insancerre · 05/04/2018 10:29

I have come to the conclusion that a holiday is essential for my health and wellbeing, so I am glad I can afford one
I haven't always been in the position to be able to do it but I now have different priorities in my life

irregularegular · 05/04/2018 10:32

I know that 1250 per adult head (for everything) is not a cheap holiday by any stretch, but it feels like good value for what we are doing compared to a lot of what I am reading on here. It's made me feel better!

Fairylea · 05/04/2018 10:33

Fijisky- yes, family fund. They’re amazing.

Stickerrocks · 05/04/2018 10:38

I love these threads. The amount you spend on a holiday depends upon your income, savings and family circumstances. Some people are wealthier than others, some people did up their houses and paid off their mortgages years ago, some people have caring responsibilities and can't afford the time to go away. Why do people express horror because some people pay £15k for a holiday and others are happy with a week under canvas? Each to their own.

bibliomania · 05/04/2018 10:42

Damn this thread for making me lust after exotic holidays. Taking dd(10) to France to stay in a caravan for a few days for May half-term (£500 flights and accommodation for two of us) but I haven't sorted out the summer yet. You're all much more organised than I am.

We'll spend a few days with family in Ireland. I'll have one week of AL left and I've been eyeing up European options. But I want to do a bigger holiday next year (I'm hoping for Asia), so I should really do something cheap and local this year, and save up for next year. But I want it now [stamps feet].

Openup41 we are doing 2 weeks long-haul and that price should cover everything. Accommodation varies! 5 star hotel to basic National Park hut via homestays and treehouses.

(actually I am doing 3, but that's just me so I left that out!)

liz70 · 05/04/2018 11:11

Grumpy how apt , if you really wanted a holiday, you'd find/save the money for one. Like I said earlier, £239 for a week in a caravan in April, sleeping 4 comfortably, 6 at a push. DG and CH so I know we'll be cosy. Not exactly £1000s ++++

Don't piss and moan at others just because they choose to spend some of their money on a much needed break from work. Maybe they've just got different priorities to you.

Fijisky · 05/04/2018 12:05

Fairylea - I agree, they have helped my son also!

Grumpy - people have different incomes! And some can afford thousands on a holiday and some can afford hundreds, it doesn’t matter how much people spend, some even have extra money on top to be able to do there house also!

Sarkyharky · 05/04/2018 12:06

My children are older and looking back some of our happiest memories are from when we were on holiday.

Fijisky · 05/04/2018 12:09

Sarkyharky - I agree! I’m an adult now and was lucky enough that our parents took us on a yearly abroad holiday from the ages of 7/8 ... some of my happiest memory’s are learning to swim in the see or playing on the beach!
I even have a memory of a man playing ball with his son in the pool and the ball hit me in the face, he said sorry straight away and felt so bad he went and bought me an ice cream! It didn’t even hurt! I was so smug getting a double magnum! Ha
