I can't of dropped 40lbs in 9 days...what is going on ?

Wantacurry · 21/03/2018 09:48

I am a very fat 20 stone woman with medical issues.

Currently following a very strict low cal medical eating plan under dietician for the past 9 days, another 13 days to go :(

The digital bathroom scales which are still working correctly for my DH, tells me I have dropped 40 pounds over the last 9 days !

That can't be right, can it ?

I do minimum of 5 miles walking a day (11, 000 steps via Fitbit), 15 minutes of body weight with trx straps exercise x 3 a week and occasional swim at the weekend with my family.

Is this broken scales, water loss or a completed anomoly and I will be much heavier again tomorrow.

Just for completeness. I always use same scales on same point of the floor, when I wake up in the morning. After using toilet but before I step into the shower and naked !

Of course I would be delighted if it was a real loss but logically it just can't be, can it ?

@yumyumpoppycat

Because I know this is a blip and I will be back to just under 20 stone tomorrow morning. But it is so nice looking at the loss of 40 lbs on MFP that I am determined to get there in reality as soon as I can. :)

Geek one My scale measures body fat on it too. But the body fat readings are not very accurate but good enough to show a general trend up or down

Wantacurry · 21/03/2018 14:05

My body fat has apparently dropped 5% over the last 9 days but if my scales are faulty, this figure could be faulty too.

MsHarry · 21/03/2018 14:09

But it's only faulty when you get on? Not your DH? They must be right. That is a low cal diet and you're exercising lots. when you are very overweight you lose quickly at first. I think it's possible.

Goldmonday · 21/03/2018 14:10

Honestly I don't think it's unbelievable. I think that the bigger people tend to be to start with the easier and more rapidly they tend to lose weight. It's as you start approaching a healthy weight that it becomes a struggle.

Weigh yourself again tomorrow, or perhaps use another set of scales if you have friends/family close by?

Do your clothes feel any loser?

Good for you if it turns out to be real! Wine

If it was water weight mostly I would think you would be urinating a lot!

For example, when my DS was born I lost 40lbs in one week -- 10lbs was baby, 3lbs was placenta and the rest was water. I was totally swollen up when pregnant so after he was born I was going to the bathroom every couple of hours to do a really long wee. After I looked like a deflated balloon (the joys of pregnancy eh?)

So my point is if it was mostly water you would have had to get rid of it and it probably would have been a bit noticeable?

sixtimesseven · 21/03/2018 14:16

Also - good for you on losing weight!

PrimalLass · 21/03/2018 14:20

GF pasta is fine, btw

RitaMills · 21/03/2018 14:21

It could be true, my mums friend started WW and she was quite heavy (20st+), she lost 1.6 st on her first week so if you’ve went from a very calorific way of eating to a VLCD then it’s possible you’ve lost that amount in nine days. You’re doing very well, I know how hard that diet is having done it a few times due to Crohn’s flare ups.

Can’t you get yourself down to a Boots chemist and weigh yourself?

Shattered04 · 21/03/2018 14:27

I've had my scales massively out if they're in a different place on the floor. Maybe something is slightly raised on one corner or something. Carpet can make them a lot more flakey (are you measuring on a hard floor?) Sometimes picking scales up then putting them down again can "reset" whatever the issue was.

Were you 100% certain about your starting weight? Maybe the first one was wrong!

Good luck - it sounds like you're doing well, regardless of the actual number!

slbhill42 · 21/03/2018 14:32

It does seem very unlikely, no matter how impressive your dieting!

I would re-weigh and check the scales. Firstly making sure all the "stupid error" possibilities are ok - apologies if this is insulting Blush but... clothing similar to last time, flat hard floor (lots of scales struggle with carpet), not leaning on anything (I once thought my DS had lost 3kg but actually he was leaning on the sink oops!), staying on until they settle properly etc.

Then try getting back on holding a weight (couple of tins of beans or whatever), and see if the difference is what it should be.

NO matter what the answer though, you're doing amazingly well so far - keep at it Star

honeyroar · 21/03/2018 14:35

It does sound unlikely to lose three stones in ten days, although the weight will definitely come off well while you're eating so little (and healthily) and exercising. Three stone down usually drops you two dress sizes - do you think that's likely? Did you measure yourself? Anyway, really well done you!

Ps, I read it as your husband weighing you at first, my eyes put commas in th wrong place, my fault!

Deathraystare · 21/03/2018 14:38

Wantacurry - the diet sounds ok - not even a starvation diet. Even if you have not really lost quite that amount good luck to you. Keep us updated!

AmazingDetectiveSlashGenius · 21/03/2018 14:53

Don't know anything about FODMAP, so please ignore me if this is unsuitable, but why not make your own stock? Takes a few hours but is very easy and makes a tasty soup base. Just simmer a carcass with a tsp of cider vinegar (or without is fine, I think it just helps leach the minerals etc out of the bones) and whatever seasonings you like.

Can then be portioned up and refrigerated or frozen.

Notproudofthisone · 21/03/2018 15:06

Why is garlic and onion forbidden!! I put it in everything Grin

SilverHairedCat · 21/03/2018 15:38

@Notproudofthisone because its a very common trigger for bowel and digestive issues, so it's part of the exclusions early in the diet. And were the first things I reintroduced!!

No, you can't OF lost It But you might HAVE lost it

Full stops? Wink

ChasedByBees · 21/03/2018 16:56

Sounds amazing and I think pure doing fantastic regardless of what the real loss is. Posting to find out. :)

nocoolnamesleft · 21/03/2018 21:48

Are you using the scales on a reliably flat smooth surface? Even carpet can bugger up a reading.

If you'd really dropped almost 3 stone, wouldn't you have noticed it in clothes? When I lost 1 1/2 stone, I went down 2 sizes. We're all different shapes, but I'd be surprised if you could have lost that much and not gone down a couple of waist band sizes...

PerfectlyDone · 21/03/2018 21:53

I think it IS possible to lose that amount of weight in 9 days, but a lot of it will have been water.
But either way losing that initial water is an important step and you have done really well - VLCD + the amount of activity you are describing IS going to result in good weight loss in a relatively short period of time.

mogulfield · 21/03/2018 21:56

If it’s correct for your DH then surely it’s accurate? If that is the case, well Done! 👏

youarenotkiddingme · 21/03/2018 21:57

I cut wheat out of my diet.

Chronic aneamia, negative coeliacs test 20 years ago. Really feeling bloated and decided to try this. Continued same diet tbh but with GF food alternatives.

I lost 7lbs in 10 days. I swear intolerance made me hold water.

With all due respect my original weight was as overweight as yours (about 2 stone). So on a ratio basis I'd say is possible.
