To ask what vegetables you don't like?

I've always thought of myself as being a fussy eater and as someone who doesn't really like veg.

I know I am fussy in that for example, I like bacon crispy and gag if I get a big stringy bit of fat in a bacon sandwich. I can't stand getting gristle in a sausage or burger, basically I'm not a big fan of processed meat. I don't like unexpected bones in food.

When I really think about it though there is only one vegetable that I can think of that I dislike and that's broccoli.

I like all fruit I can't think of a single one I don't like. I'm not saying I'd relish a plate of sprouts, but I love salad and eat most veg if cooked and seasoned well. If I was to go round the fruit and veg aisle literally the only thing I wouldn't like to eat is the broccoli.

I wonder if I'm not that fussy after all.

I have a food phobia, I don't like the texture, taste or smell of lots of foods.
I don't eat anything processed
I check all ready made meals for onions as the thought of one in my mouth makes me physically vomit.
I don't eat any vegetables, only fruit I'll have are bananas and apples but have to be in the mood.
I'm not a big eater on meat either.
I've seen specialists and dietitians and sadly nothing is helping my problem.
I've very active, swim 3 evenings a week, cycle almost everyday. Do yoga etc and take a variety of multivitamins due to not eating what I should.
Oh I've even done the blindfold eating and threw up!

PurpleTraitor · 19/03/2018 13:58

So many seem to be a style of cooking rather than a dislike of the vegetable itself?

Okra for example, last time I had it it was cooked crispy. Which is about as opposite to slimy as I can think of.

I don’t love parsnip (but can eat it most ways tbh just not a huge fan) or fennel (it’s a bit aniseed) and would probably slide raw onions off a salad if I could. I wish I liked bananas too. But other than that - I love sprouts, kale, squash, courgette, cabbage, beans....

Doctroo · 19/03/2018 14:24

Baked beans.

Hot, orange spew.

When I go for a fry-up I have to specify, clearly, NO BAKED BEANS. And still, sometimes, the fry-up comes out RUINED by the presence of baked beans. I then lose my appetite and have to ask for a refund. I really cannot stand them, the sight, the smell, and the idea of eating them makes me giddy with nausea.

FUCK baked beans.

Hot, orange spew.

LimonViola · 19/03/2018 14:29

theymademejoin I do taste it 😂 I just really like the taste!

Doc: I don't mind baked beans but I can't bear them touching anything else for a sustained period of time haha. If I get a fry up or make my own I'll put them in a little ramekin so I can eat them at my own speed without them infecting everything around them.

Spidey, ever tried flash frying shredded green cabbage in a wok? It's absolutely amazing with bolognese as a replacement for spaghetti.

grasspigeons · 19/03/2018 14:30

bitter ones like sprouts

Spoog1971xx · 19/03/2018 14:30

Tarragon.

RatRolyPoly · 19/03/2018 14:33

Jerusalem artichokes.

I can't believe they haven't been mentioned more!

RANK.

I'm exactly the same, even gagged at the thought of fat on bacon! My DM used to eat the far I'd cut off bacon / steak / pork chops etc!! Grim.

Can't stand aubergines or courgettes. Not a huge fan of BNS but like it blended down in soup. Don't mind sweet potatoes in the form of fries or a mash but not 'in' things (like chunks in a curry for instance)

Not really a fruit fan though. I like cherries, and will eat the odd banana and apple. I like pineapple on pizza lol.

hellsbellsmelons · 19/03/2018 14:34

Aubergines. They are the very poo of the devil
Yep - and Kale.
I'm quite a fussy eater and sound just like you OP with the bacon thing and sausages have to be really well done etc....
But I love fruit and veg, I just don't eat it very often!

Thisnamechanger · 19/03/2018 14:36

Salad. Weird shapes difficult to get your mouth around and it's all watery and rubbish.

Igneococcus · 19/03/2018 14:36

I eat every fruit or veg but I agree with Doctroo about baked beans. I can't even watch other people eat them. I like pulses and cook with them a lot but tinned baked beans make me feel queasy even thinking about them.

Doctroo · 19/03/2018 14:39

Even the real Doctor Who (the 11th, Matt Smith, incarnation) hates baked beans; in The Eleventh Hour, Amelia Pond cooked some for him, but he spat them out in disgust, declaring, "Beans are evil. Bad, bad beans."

Bring on the fish fingers and custard!

dorothyparka · 19/03/2018 14:41

Swede's a bit meh given the effort involved in preparing it (it's like peeling and cooking a bowling ball). Also I'm artichoke-indifferent.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 19/03/2018 14:41

I love all fruit and veg and cannot imagine a life spent not eating lots and lots of them!

The only one I sort of avoid if I can help it is leek - and one food I will utterly refuse and would rather go hungry than eat is leek and potato soup - you might as well be eating wallpaper paste!

I am not wild about sweet potato or butternut squash but I do eat them occasionally

fruit wise I love everything but blackcurrant would be my least favourite (I hate it as a flavour - ribena etc) but if someone has cooked it in something I will of course eat it.

I ADORE beetroot, asparagus, artichoke, fennel, celery etc Grin

CallarMorvern · 19/03/2018 14:46

I hate mushrooms with a passion, rank slimy things, they are the work of the devil. Can't stand the smell, taste or texture of them, the smell of mushroom soup makes me retch.
Other than that, I'm not keen on cooked string beans or raw tomatoes, but I will eat them if they are in front of me.

BearSoFair · 19/03/2018 14:46

Peas and leek

Elllicam · 19/03/2018 14:48

I’m a fussy git generally but actually there’s no veg I won’t eat. I eat most fruit as well although not keen to eat really sour things raw. On the other hand I don’t eat meat or fish, mayonnaise or stringy cheese.

wendywoopywoo222 · 19/03/2018 14:49

Just broad beans for me. Devil poo.

PestoSurfissimos · 19/03/2018 14:58

Swede
Broad beans
Celery

OliviaStabler · 19/03/2018 15:20

I like bacon crispy and gag if I get a big stringy bit of fat in a bacon sandwich

Agree! That's why I can't eat a standard bacon sandwich or bacon and egg McMuffin. Bacon has to be so crispy that it shatters into pieces once your fork touches it. I am a master at making such bacon now Grin

theunsure · 19/03/2018 15:26

Fennel
Artichokes
Mange tout and any "stringy" bean - non stringy ones are fine
Cooked tomatoes unless in a sauce
Water chestnuts
Cooked spinach (love it raw as a salad)
Cooked chard (again will eat raw in salad)
Pumpkin

I'm very good with veg but dislike a lot of fruit

theymademejoin · 19/03/2018 22:44

@LimonViola - I presume if you like cucumber, it tastes relatively mild? Cucumber contains phenylthiocarbamide which can only be tasted by some people. For those who can taste it, it is a particularly pungent, bitter, taste. Those who can't taste it just get a mild taste that they may or may not like. For me, it completely overwhelms everything it comes in contact with.

FriggingMardyCow · 19/03/2018 23:23

Aubergine
Courgette or carrot if they've been previously frozen; fresh are fine
Raw celery

Envy
Bouledeneige · 19/03/2018 23:54

Hate artichokes and avocados, and runner beans.

Love broccoli and peas, cauliflower, roast parsnips, carrots. Fine with aubergine and beetroot.

BonnieF · 20/03/2018 00:11

I’m a serious omnivore. If it’s edible, I eat it. If it’s inedible, I might just have a nibble.

But even I draw the line at disgusting, slimy, tasteless okra. Bleurgh.
