This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

It is just terrible isn't it the whole put upon mum nonsense

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 14/03/2018 14:58

Oh, I love bad sitcoms! Must give it a go...

Daffodillia · 14/03/2018 14:59

Never heard of it. But one I do think is shit is not going out... lots of built up one liners crap

Dallia · 14/03/2018 15:05

Ugh Not Going Out is AWFUL.

I do quite like Mum though Blush

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:06

I watched Not Going Out once, years ago and I agree, just not funny! The BBC used to do some really good sitcoms like 2.4 Children, Men Behaving Badly and Bottom but they seem to have gone really downhill.

Mum is fantastic.

To get the full effect you have to watch from series one. It's all about a woman dealing with the loss of her husband, is basically doing fine but people around her keep crowding her. It's very finely written and superbly acted as was the writers last series Him and Her.

IsDaveThere · 14/03/2018 15:08

I agree about Mum, it's terrible!

The son's thick girlfriend drives me potty and as for the brother's stuck up girlfriend - don't get me started. Nobody would put up with her behaviour!

DownAtFraggleRock · 14/03/2018 15:08

I knew it would be Mum. DH and I totally didn't get it either.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/03/2018 15:10

Never seen Mum. But I used to love Not Going Out before they moved it on and had children. It’s pretty dire now, not funny at all, although I love Lee Mack normally.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 14/03/2018 15:10

I really like Mum. I dont think its funny as in belly laugh territory but its a very wry look at the everyday.
Not going out was excellent to.begin with. Then Tim Vine left and it lost something.
I cant get on with tgatbnew.one with John Cleese in.

numbereightyone · 14/03/2018 15:11

Watch The Country instead. It's absolutely brilliant.

numbereightyone · 14/03/2018 15:11

This Country I mean.

lostincumbria · 14/03/2018 15:12

Absolutely adore it. One of the best things on Tv. Written by a comedy genius, with some beautifully clever, sensitive acting played out against much broader comedy themes. I judge you.*

*Other opinions are welcome, they're just wrong.

MelvinThePenguin · 14/03/2018 15:12

I love it. I actually find it quite moving and think it’s very cleverly written and beautifully acted.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 14/03/2018 15:13

I liked Mum when I first saw it but it does now seem very samey. Agree with watch This Country instead, so funny.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:13

Trampire I started at the beginning but it just feels like I’m waiting for something to happen or a funny bit to come along and then the credits come up.

I agree about the stuck up girlfriend, no one would put up with that!

welliments · 14/03/2018 15:14

Mum is brilliant! It's so much more than what's on the surface.

This Country is also awesome.

Fightthebear · 14/03/2018 15:15

I love Mum! Find it both funny/awkward and really moving in a quiet way.

Peter Mullen in last nights episode, amazing.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 14/03/2018 15:16

To those saying that Not Going Out is rubbish, you might find that it's only rubbish when the episodes have only been written by Lee Mack. The episodes that have been co-written with Daniel Peak are much better, in my opinion.
Also, the last couple of series are more of a traditional type sitcom (mum, dad, in-laws and kids) than the earlier shows, which makes them completely different in my opinion.
If you want a good comedy, then might I suggest Trollied - I find that hilarious and wish there were more episodes per series!!

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:16

This Country is based about 5 minutes down the road from where I live but I didn’t get on with it at all.

I haven't seen series 2 of Mum yet,but I really loved series 1. So gentle with lots going on under the surface. The one I really didn't get was "Derek". I watched one episode and that was enough for me!

Coldilox · 14/03/2018 15:20

I love it too. Brilliantly written and acted.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:20

Oh and I watched Top Gear the other day and cringed so hard when Lee Mack asked Matt LeBlanc to be in Not Going Out, I seriously doubt that will ever happen!

OP posts:
Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 14/03/2018 15:20

Have you tried Derry Girls? Old fashioned but made me laugh.

silveradodreams · 14/03/2018 15:21

Mum series 1 was brilliant but series 2 just gets worse and worse. I could believe it in series one, but series 2 is just daft with the odd glimmer of brilliance.
