This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

@TheRebel Motherland was brilliant. @kellybailey I don't get Mrs Browns Boys either!

bettytaghetti · 14/03/2018 17:11

YABVU! Mum is brill. I love all the characters, from the ditzy son's girlfriend to her brother's wife/partner. Very touching and poignant moments underneath all the comedy.

bettytaghetti · 14/03/2018 17:16

Aah! Just seen that you're favourite sitcom was Ever Decreasing Circles; explains a lot!

EastMidsMummy · 14/03/2018 17:17

Mum is outstanding. Some of the best TV inthe last few years. Beautiful, moving, warm and human. Funny too.

Unfortunately, the first series is now falling off BBC iPlayer...

FloydOnThePull · 14/03/2018 17:21

Hated Motherland, 'haha, look at this hapless silly woman trying to 'have it all', what a clot she is'. No, look at this woman with a fuckwit husband who needs to do his bit or fuck off out of it altogether.

Comedy central are currently repeating all of My Name is Earl, watched a couple this morning and I'd forgotten just how much I loved it the first time round

PuppyMonkey · 14/03/2018 17:23

Totally agree about This Country, that’s the first genuinely funny sitcom since The Office.

haverhill · 14/03/2018 17:28

I binge watched This Country which I never do. It’s superb, also close to us. “I got enemies in North Cerney. I got enemies in South Cerney” Grin

5BlueHydrangea · 14/03/2018 17:47

Just caught up on last nights episode, very moving.

Well, if we all liked the same things there wouldn't be much on to would there?! Variety is the spice of life and all that...

Daffodillia · 14/03/2018 17:57

Ah yes 2.4 children, and my family. They were good sitcoms.

Daffodillia · 14/03/2018 18:00

ffloyd I think the USA has sitcoms sorted much better than us, despite both countries having very different sense of humours.

I love My Name is Earl, and Friends, BBT, The Goldbergs.

Agree that Motherland was too stereotypical for my liking.

silveradodreams · 14/03/2018 18:08

It's well acted, and is really funny in parts (the chat about going to the theatre for a start) but I can't bear to watch much more of it. The son and girlfriend started off as idiotic, but now they're selfish morons. The brother's girlfriend was brilliant, but is now unbearable. The mother of the girlfriend had a moment in series 1 where she had some kind of realisation how awful she was, and now she's back to being a caricature.
Most importantly, no normal person would put up with what she does. Ever. She just stands around smiling. uugh

NoCureForLove · 14/03/2018 18:16

Mum is fabulous! Poignant, mov8ng and funny. This Country us also great- both are beautifully observed, written and acted.

OP - if you 'dont get' either of them and dont find them funny- have you considered it might not be them but you?!Smile

ForalltheSaints · 14/03/2018 18:22

Stefan Golaszewski did two one man plays I saw in 2009 (I think) and as with his subsequent work, it is not funny as in laugh out loud, but nearer to comedy drama. Him and Her had in my opinion too many series, but the wedding ones I enjoyed greatly. I saw a few of the first series of Mum, but wonder if it is just an idea/premise that has a limited life span and two more series is too much.

As for bad sitcoms, Not Going Out has never been the same without Tim Vine and Mrs Browns Boys is an argument for withholding the licence fee.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 18:25

NoCureForLove hehe well obviously some people like it or it wouldn’t have got a 2nd series, but a lot of people who’ve commented have agreed it’s not really a “sitcom” more a drama with funny bits Grin

If you liked Derry Girls you could try London Irish on 4 OD. It's by the same writer.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 18:29

Mrs browns boys is dire, I'd rather watch paint dry. I'm sure they are all lovely people - just a lame format and a bit ott
I loved only fools and horses but that carried on for too long.

The office was good - the spoof documentary is a clever format for a sit com. Didn't like Extras as much though.

Bexter801 · 14/03/2018 18:35

I agree Mrs Brown's boys is terrible. But I do find young offenders a hoot, similar to Derry girls....Also Derek, mixture between funny and sad

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 18:41

I can’t bring myself to watch Mrs Browns Boys, just from the trailers it looks awful, I may be wrong but I’m not willing to risk it! Anyway I’ve just found out there was a new Endeavour the other day that I missed, so that should keep me occupied for the next hour or so Smile

I liked Derek as clearly Ricky Gervais liked Derek as a person as well! A good egg. The nurse / care worker in it was in Bad move.

Damned on is again - that's quite amusing but then I like Jo Brand and the one that plays Nitin is funny. It's not always an easy watch. Comedy is a bit hit and miss atm.

Iamtheresurrection · 14/03/2018 18:54

I like Mum.

Action Team on ITV2 is probably the worst I've seen. We gave up after 5 minutes and DH usually watches at least the first episode.

Nomorechickens · 14/03/2018 18:58

Talking of Matt le Blanc, I loved Episodes.
But the best sitcom (if it is one) EVER is Dinnerladies (Victoria Wood plus brilliant cast). Not a dud moment (except for Julie Walters' ridiculous overacted character)

MrsJayy · 14/03/2018 18:59

Dh recorded action team and put it off and he usually sticks with thefirst episode at least

Rhodes2015again · 14/03/2018 19:03

My parents find “mum” hilarious and recommended it to me. I didn’t even get through the first episode it’s not in any way funny!

MargaretCavendish · 14/03/2018 19:06

I love My Name is Earl, and Friends, BBT, The Goldbergs.

Horses for courses, we all have different tastes, etc. etc. But can you really claim that Motherland was too clichéd and predictable and then give The Big Bang Theory as an example of a good sitcom?!

MrsHathaway · 14/03/2018 19:07

Damned is brilliant. And so little known.
