This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

Yes the sister in law is wonderful to watch. I love it.

SporkInTheToaster · 16/03/2018 15:32

I agree re Kelly, arespectable. The actress acts it brilliantly. The light and shade between the scenes where she’s ditsy and thoughtless and the poignant ones where you see her with her mum is so well done.

I cannot stand the Pauline (SIL) character but I suppose that’s the point.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 16/03/2018 17:14

Regarding the actress that plays Kelly it took DH and i ages to figurw outvwhere wed seen her before. Then we watched a rerun of George Gently and shes the female detective in that. Such a differwnt character (plus a North east accent which is hard to get right) I think she's a fantastic actress.

Lottapianos · 16/03/2018 18:35

Ok, I've watched the final 2 episodes of Series 1 and the first 4 episodes of Series 2 of Mum. It's great Smile really wonderful acting all round. I ADORE the sister in law - fabulous character Grin

The son and girlfriend are absolutely infuriating. I keep waiting for Cathy to lose her shit and scream at them that she's sick of being treated like a skivvy and having them turn her house into a shit tip. Can't wait to see what happens between her and Michael next week

Meadowflowers · 16/03/2018 18:48

I love Mum. She's just brilliant. Out of them all I think she's so strong. She knows how they're all treating her but rises above it all. She very intelligent, well compared to the rest in the family!!!
Derry girls is fantastic and so accurate to the time it's set.

ucheco · 16/03/2018 23:51

I love the show mum! I love the inappropriate and award moments in it. It’s pure hilarity!

InspMorse · 17/03/2018 09:50

I can't wait for next week.
Peter Mullen as Michael was amazing this week. He didn't have to say a word, his face said it all. It was brilliant.

InspMorse · 17/03/2018 10:00

As for the FIL... best moment for him too this week - just as nasty & horrible as ever yet at the same time arranging cushions and folding up his coat... if you've seen it, you will know what I'm saying. Brilliant.

Gwynnita · 17/03/2018 10:50

"Mum" is the worst things I've watched in ages. They're all horrible to her, or just patronising. The characters are all vile stereotypes. The worst writing of the unimaginative kind I have seen in a long time. Wtf is going on? And while I'm at it... did anyone watch that "architecture" programme with Caroline Quentin? Another piece of patronising shite. They were in Japan and played "I'm turning Japanese" ffs. I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing.

And another thing...........!

MargaretCavendish · 17/03/2018 11:23

One huge divide I've noticed - and perhaps one of the reasons that people have such divergent views on Mum - is that quite a lot of people seem to find it very unsatisfying to either watch or read a narrative with no one they 'like' or no character whose place they can easily imagine themselves in. I hear people say quite often 'none of the characters are sympathetic' as a complaint. It isn't something that applies to me personally - as long as the characters are interesting I am happy to watch something where none of them are nice or likable - so I find it hard to see why it matters so much to other people, but it seems to be a really big dividing line; I know lots of people whose tastes are otherwise very like mine but who hate some things I love because 'I didn't like any of the characters'.

Yep.

It’s why we tend to prefer Pride and Prejudice to Mansfield Park.

One of my favorite series of books is the Ripley books and I loved the Talented Mr Ripley with Matt Damon, but I don’t “like” any of the characters, I’m not sure that any of them have any redeeming features, the same with Dexter and Breaking Bad.

Peter Mullen is my secret crush. I saw him first in a small film called This Little Life.

Slartybartfast · 17/03/2018 17:29

Peter Mullen is my new crush now, just saw Hector the other night on the strength of googling him, sigh

Slartybartfast · 17/03/2018 17:33

Am just going to walk This Little Life, thanks 84charing Smile

QueenieMum · 17/03/2018 17:56

I've only watched a few episodes of the current series but I really like it. I couldn't tell you exactly why but it's superbly acted - I love Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan was superb this week. Even the ditzy daughter in law is good - when she laughs, she looks like she's genuinely laughing. Really good and observant.

84CharingCrossRoad · 17/03/2018 19:26

Slartybartfast Hope you had plenty of tissues...... Sad

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 17/03/2018 20:10

Yes had to look up where I'd seen Mullen before as I thought can't imagine I've missed him until now, so much emotion conveyed in his eyes.

Just very different in other roles, as I immediately recognised him when liked him up.

His Wikipedia page is busy I bet !

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 17/03/2018 20:11

Lesley Manville does look like Cheri Lungi? Right? My husband disagrees.

Fluffy40 · 17/03/2018 20:54

I love Mum, it’s very well written imho.

Lottapianos · 17/03/2018 21:01

'Peter Mullen is my secret crush'

I hear this. I see where you are coming from Grin

'Lesley Manville does look like Cheri Lungi? Right?'

LJ17xx · 17/03/2018 21:17

It was absolutely terrible! But I enjoyed it all the same Grin
