This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

I love damned, but no one I know seems to have watched it!

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 19:09

Mum isn't really laugh out loud funny. It's more than that really.
The old couple remind me of my in laws!
It's an acquired taste.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 19:10

Damned is good as the characters are mostly not very nice!

MrsHathaway · 14/03/2018 19:13

Have now tter and will also endorse Motherland and Trollied. Both very real and at times achingly sad. Also true of Damned.

Lots of women in all those.

Meanwhile Red Dwarf has not aged at all well.

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 19:16

Oh I’d forgotten about Dinnerladies, Victoria Wood is a comic genius though, she never let anything she did jump the shark.

Tter=rtft

Riverside2 · 14/03/2018 19:18

Not Going Out was great before they got married!

The camping one....the drugs in the overcoat one....hilarious Grin

SloanePeterson · 14/03/2018 19:19

I binge watched Catastrophe when I was ill a few weeks ago and don’t know how I managed to miss it. Best thing I’ve seen for ages. But yes, dinnerladies takes some beating in the sitcom stakes

OliviaStabler · 14/03/2018 19:23

Can't be worse than The Royale Family.

NoCureForLove · 14/03/2018 19:27

I think you'll find The Royale Family is GENIUS!

RubyLennoxExists · 14/03/2018 19:30

Mum is not a sitcom, its a drama with funny elements in it - bit like a Mike Leigh film. I think if you watch it as a sitcom you'll be disappointed.

pandarific · 14/03/2018 19:37

Eh? It’s excellently written, YABU. It’s not a comedy really, more a drama with amusing pieces. It’s subtle; maybe not what you were in the mood fo?

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 14/03/2018 19:37

I LOVE Mum! I think it’s hilarious! Peter Mullen has the skill of showing every different emotion through his eyes. Such beautiful acting. I love the son’s girlfriend. The episode when she explains the relationship she has with her mum made me tear up.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 19:38

Grandmas house was funny too. A bit like Mum with similar characters.

InspMorse · 14/03/2018 19:51

I LOVE Mum! It's not a sitcom though. It's poignant & funny at the same time, brilliantly subtle. It's makes me smirk (a lot) rather than belly laugh. I don't want it to end.

ChiaraRimini · 14/03/2018 19:54

Mum is awful. I wish the lead character would get shitfaced and shag a 20 year old instead of standing around in her cardie smiling ruefully all the goddamn time.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 19:57

Aww Cathy is just nice. She does get frustrated but she doesn’t show it.

BetterEatCheese · 14/03/2018 19:58

I absolutely love it and it is clever in very subtle ways. Love the characters and the way they relate to one another

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 20:02

Cathy is also still grieving for her dh. Even if he was hard going. She was aloyal wife and can’t change now! His presence hangs over everything.

cherrytree63 · 14/03/2018 20:10

Dinner Ladies is on Gold at the moment. Cracks me up!

Funkyslippers · 14/03/2018 20:31

If you don't like the Royle Family/The Office you're obviously looking for more obvious humour.

But I loved Ever Decreasing Circles back in the day

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 14/03/2018 20:35

Dinnerladies is amazing. DH and I never tire of it. The Christmas/ Millenium episodes have tearful from laughing and total emotional overload everytime.
OP..i totally agree with Ever Decreasing Circles. Characters are so good and its another one id happily sit and watch over again.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 14/03/2018 20:36

I can tolerate most.

Nothing will EVER top Friday night dinner. It makes me cry laughing

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 20:36

Loved The Office, especially the bit where they’ve been to the nightclub and as the motorcycle goes past you just see Gareth’s face in the sidecar Grin

For American comedies I love Seinfeld, Frasier, Modern Family and It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia. Never thought much of The Big Bang Theory or Friends.

Mum is laugh out loud funny, and poignant. Unmissable. The acting is superb.
