This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

Tawdry Yes, Derry Girls was good, it’s no Father Ted but it was at least funny Smile

I watched This Country last night. I was quite impressed the two young main characters (cousins in the show) are actually brother and sister and wrote the whole thing

Eveforever · 14/03/2018 15:24

I've not seen "Mum", however, I did catch "Hold the Sunset" the other day and I thought that was dire.

Have you tried Netflix? Lots of good shows on there.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/03/2018 15:25

Mum is brilliant... Beautifully observed.

Trampire · 14/03/2018 15:26

This Country is brilliant. My teen dd agrees, her Secondary School is very rural and recognises many people!

Maybe it's just not your humour OP? Not everyone likes the same thing, doesn't mean it's awful.

MelvinThePenguin · 14/03/2018 15:27

I am utterly baffled by Father Ted.

Horses for courses!

MadisonAvenue · 14/03/2018 15:27

Castiells Also, their Dad in real life plays Kerry's Dad (Martin Mucklowe), the old guy, Len, is their uncle in real life and Slugs is a friend of theirs.

brogueish · 14/03/2018 15:27

We're watching the first series at the moment and very much enjoying it. Reminds me of Detectorists, that's another very gentle, human, comedy.

Bexter801 · 14/03/2018 15:28

I have to say I love it,though she annoys me how she never really shows any emotion. Have you watched young offenders, catastrophe, chewing gum...I find them hilarious :)

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:29

Another mum fan here! The one with John Cleese is dire though and not going out has lost the plot lately. Used to be good with Tim vine and Miranda Hart.

GeekyWombat · 14/03/2018 15:31

Have you watched Fleabag? It's very dark but very funny.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 14/03/2018 15:31

I didn't particularly like the first season of Not Going Out, but any of the ones with both Lucy and Tim in are excellent. The charm for me is the corny one-liners that you can see coming a mile off. It's comforting.

Finnyhaddock · 14/03/2018 15:33

I love it. It’s subtle but probably aimed at my age group ...50 something.
I don’t think my DC would appreciate it.

GruffaIo · 14/03/2018 15:33

I love Mum. The most recent episode has a distinct change of pace and made me cry.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:33

Fleabag was brilliant. I hope she does another series. Olivia Colman was fabulous in that.

PinkyBlunder · 14/03/2018 15:35

Mum is very subtle. Definitely not your conventional humour. I quite like it, I find it very touching and rather bittersweet, especially with the Kelly character. It’s almost very sad.

WinstonlovesJulia1984 · 14/03/2018 15:36

I love "Mum". It's not really a sitcom so sometimes people who've heard that description come to it with expectations of something more broadly comic. Last night's episode was heartbreaking as Michael finally tried to express his feelings to Cathy, obviously carried around inside him for a long time, but unspoken and prompted by a huge emotional event in his own life. Both Peter Mullan & Lesley Manville were wonderful - beautiful, subtle performances which spoke volumes over and above the lines themselves.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:37

Ds1 and I are detectorist fans - Toby Jones is so good in that. It’s a lovely sit com.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 14/03/2018 15:38

Love love love mum.
The acting is marvellous. Even dh loves it.

Lottapianos · 14/03/2018 15:42

OK, I'm keen to give 'Mum' a go now. Where can one find the first series?

Agree that Fleabag is totally marvellous, but probably not everyone's cup of tea

The comedy hit that I have never been able to get my head around is Gavin and Stacey. So bad it's like a parody of a sitcom. A waste of some very fine actors (some awful ones too). I know many people who love it Hmm

WinstonlovesJulia1984 · 14/03/2018 15:42

The80sweregreat Fleabag was indeed brilliant. I watched it twice and recommended it everyone.

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:44

Fleabag is indeed a fabulous sit com. Hugh Dennis was very good too - it’s another little gem.

Hardwickwhite · 14/03/2018 15:45

I love "Mum". I think that last night's episode had some of the best acting I have ever seen on TV. I do think if you approached it expecting a "sitcom" you might not get it. The humour is more of the carefully observed dry and dark variety than slapstick.

BeanFobbedOff · 14/03/2018 15:48

I managed 1 episode of each of Mum and Hold the sunset, and thought they were shit. Great actors trapped in shamefully crap sitcoms.

But I loved Two Doors Down.

AiryFairy1 · 14/03/2018 15:49

Might have to give Mum a go too. My recent -ish fav: Camping. Current avoid: Bliss 😭
