This sitcom is just not funny

So I’ve been off work sick for nearly 2 weeks and I’ve watched everything good on TV. Now I’m trawling through looking for anything to watch and I decided to give the BBC sitcom “Mum” a go, it’s supposed to be BAFTA award winning but it’s just awful. Every episode seems to be the various members of this woman’s family come to her house, look down on her and say horrible things to her and she gives them the side eye and says “ok” and looks a bit sad.

I wasn’t keen on Gavin and Stacey - at first - but kind of grew to love it oddly enough.

PinkyBlunder · 14/03/2018 15:50

Hold the Sunset is embarrassing. Really, really, really bad and such a waste of Alison Steadman and John Cleese.

AiryFairy1 · 14/03/2018 15:50

Oh also quite enjoyed that one with Jack Dee in the countryside

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:53

Lead balloon with jack Dee was v funny. I loved Magda and the guy who run the coffee shop. It was very funny.

Titaniumpins · 14/03/2018 15:53

Watch Derry irls CH 4 - absolutely hilarious.

Titaniumpins · 14/03/2018 15:54

*sorry Derry Girls

The80sweregreat · 14/03/2018 15:54

Bad move with Dee was also good. Quite realistic

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:54

Loved Detectorists! Really subtle but still funny Grin

My favourite sitcom of all time is Ever Decreasing Circles which I’ve only seen because someone gave me it on DVD because they thought I’d like it.

I watched Plebs on Netflix, thought it would be awful but was actually quite funny!

I didn’t even know John Cleese was doing a new one, is he short of cash or something?

Mum is utterly, utterly wonderful. @Lottapianos the first series is on iPlayer. You need to watch it from the start.

Notso · 14/03/2018 15:55

I love Mum. It's sweet, sad, and funny. It reminds me a bit of the Royale Family.
I hated Not Going Out, I'm surprised they made more after the first series.

PinkyBlunder · 14/03/2018 15:55

Must be TheRebel it truly is terrible.

PinkyBlunder · 14/03/2018 15:56

I was thinking how Mum reminds me of The Royle Family last night Notso. Very similar undertones and writing

Robinkitty · 14/03/2018 15:57

I enjoy watching mum although I agree you need to watch from series 1 to understand the characters. Some of it I find a bit cliched but other bits are true to life and really funny.

Lottapianos · 14/03/2018 15:58

Thanks spider. I'm planning a telly day on Friday so may get stuck in then

Orlandsundry · 14/03/2018 15:59

I hate that new programme on Sky about the man with two families - Bliss - utterly grim I thought. Two really nice women being lied to by a really crap devious man. It made me feel really uncomfortable.

Derry Girls - marvellous!

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 15:59

Oh I’d forgotten about Lead Balloon, genius! But then I’d watch anything with Jack Dee in Grin

I’m not sure about Gavin and Stacey, I could take it or leave it, although Alison Steadman reminds me of MIL and I do now call DH “My Little Prince” in an Essex accent

I love it! Lots of subtle comments. I agree with the PP who said it might suit slightly older watchers.. my dd is 25 and can't see why I like it so much. Not watched last night yet...

TatianaLarina · 14/03/2018 16:01

The only good U.K. sitcom on a the mo is Upstart Crow.

Otherwise just get Kimmy Schmidt or Grace and Frankie on Netflix.

CaptainCardamom · 14/03/2018 16:01

Mum is amazing, and so was Him and Her. What's gone horribly wrong is the BBC calling it a "sitcom" - it's really not! It's far more like a Mike Leigh film. It's an emotional drama with some grotesque characters and some funny bits, but they're not funny as in jokes and one-liners, more just tragicomic observation of what people can be like.

Him and Her was basically about a young couple living in a grotty flat and their mates, not much happened - but as it went on you realised there was this huge, tragic situation at the heart of it. As a PP said the writer works with a whole arc, you have to watch the whole thing.

GayAllen · 14/03/2018 16:03

I bloody loved Him and Her (hence user name) so I’ll give Mum a go 😁

Tralalee · 14/03/2018 16:04

I love Mum I think it's brilliant

Tralalee · 14/03/2018 16:05

Yes it's like a sitcom written by Mike leigh.

It's not really a sitcom. My dh likes it too.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 14/03/2018 16:07

You should watch the American comedy called ‘mom’ with Alison Janet. It’s hilarious 😂

boatyroo · 14/03/2018 16:07

I think Mum is one of the best things on TV at the moment. Agree it's not a traditional sitcom so don't think it should be viewed with that mind set.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 14/03/2018 16:08
